Kang Daniel Defamation Case: YouTuber Ordered to Mediation After Appeal
The legal battle between singer Kang Daniel and YouTuber A takes another turn as the case heads to mediation following an appeal. Accused of spreading defamatory content, YouTuber A, known for targeting celebrities with malicious rumors, now faces potential settlement discussions with Kang Daniel.
The Case So Far
In November 2024, the Seoul Central District Court's Civil Division 27 ruled partially in favor of Kang Daniel in a defamation lawsuit, ordering YouTuber A to pay 30 million KRW (approximately $20,500) in damages and cover 70% of litigation costs. Dissatisfied with the ruling, both Kang Daniel and YouTuber A filed appeals, escalating the case to a second trial.
On December 3, the appellate court referred the case to mediation, a process aimed at resolving disputes through mutual agreement. The mediation session will provide an opportunity for both parties to negotiate a settlement before further court proceedings.
The Allegations
The controversy began in 2022 when YouTuber A uploaded a video titled "The Disordered Private Life of the National Boyfriend Idol," targeting Kang Daniel with baseless rumors. The YouTuber’s channel, infamous for publishing defamatory content about idols, had posted similar videos about other high-profile celebrities before it was eventually deleted.
Kang Daniel is not the only celebrity seeking justice against the YouTuber. IVE’s Wonyoung, Starship Entertainment, and other stars, including BTS’s V and Jungkook, aespa’s Karina, and EXO’s Suho, have also filed defamation complaints. In the first trial, IVE’s Wonyoung and Starship Entertainment won their cases, though YouTuber A has appealed those rulings as well.
Court’s Stand on Defamation
During the criminal trial, YouTuber A expressed regret, stating, “I was immature and thoughtless. I deeply regret hurting the victims. I ask for leniency.” However, the court rejected these claims, citing the YouTuber’s intent to defame and failure to verify the credibility of the rumors. The judge condemned A’s actions, highlighting the significant damage caused to the victims’ reputations.
Kang Daniel’s Response
In light of the legal developments, Kang Daniel’s agency, ARA, released a strong statement, reaffirming their commitment to justice. “Regardless of whether the defendant appeals, we will pursue a civil lawsuit for 100 million KRW (approximately $70,000). This is a necessary step to prevent further harm and ensure accountability for such actions,” the agency declared.
What’s Next?
The upcoming mediation session will determine if the parties can reach a settlement or if the case will continue in court. With public curiosity mounting, the outcome of this high-profile legal battle could set a significant precedent in addressing cyber defamation against K-pop idols and celebrities.
