The devastating Jeju Air crash at Muan International Airport has prompted a nationwide mourning period, leading to the suspension of numerous television programs and year-end events.

A Nation in Mourning

On December 29, at 9:03 AM, Jeju Air flight 7C2216, arriving from Bangkok, collided with the runway wall during landing, resulting in a tragic explosion. Out of the 181 individuals onboard, 179 lives were lost. In response, the South Korean government declared a national mourning period lasting until January 4, 2025, as the nation grieves one of its worst aviation disasters.

Entertainment Industry Takes a Pause

Major TV networks have adjusted their schedules to honor the victims and their families. Here’s how broadcasters are responding:

KBS

  • Cancellations: State-run KBS has halted key programs on KBS1, including AM Plaza, National Singing Contest, TV Show Authentic Masterpieces, and Korean Traditional Music Concert. Popular KBS2 shows such as The Seasons - Lee Young Ji's Rainbow and Gag Concert are also canceled.
  • Delays: Music and entertainment staples like Music Bank, Stars' Top Recipe at Fun-Staurant, and Immortal Songs will take a break this week.
  • News Coverage: KBS remains committed to delivering detailed updates on the tragedy through programs like In Depth 60 Minutes and KBS Documentary CHANG.

MBC

  • Schedule Adjustments: MBC has replaced Radio Star and Where is My Home with feature films Single in Seouland Motel California. However, Hangout with Yoo, I Live Alone, Point of Omniscient Interfere, and the Friday-Saturday drama When the Phone Rings will air as scheduled.

SBS

  • Minimal Changes: Unlike other networks, SBS has not announced significant entertainment program cancellations. Shows like Kick a Goal and What on Earth will proceed as planned, alongside the highly anticipated premiere of the drama Love Scout on January 3.

Other Networks

  • JTBC: Programs like Han Moon Chul's Dashcam Review and Divorce Camp will take a temporary hiatus.
  • Channel A & TV Chosun: Channel A’s Trendy Men's Lifestyle and Family Over the Border, along with TV Chosun's Miss Trot, are also suspended.

Public Response and Solidarity

The entertainment industry’s collective decision to halt programming reflects the nation’s deep mourning and solidarity with the victims and their families. Viewers can expect alternative broadcasts and extensive news coverage during this time.

As South Korea continues to grapple with the enormity of the tragedy, these cancellations serve as a somber reminder of the nation's loss.
