Actor Song Joong-ki is gearing up for the release of his highly anticipated film, Bogota: City of the Last Chance, where he plays Guk-hee, a member of a Korean immigrant family navigating life in Colombia. At a press screening on December 19, held at Megabox Coex in Seoul, the actor opened up about his experience filming in Colombia and shared heartfelt insights about his personal connection to the country.

Bogota tells the gripping tale of Guk-hee, whose ambitions push him to adapt and thrive in an unfamiliar environment. Speaking about the film, Song Joong-ki emphasized the universal themes at its core: “Although we filmed in a faraway place, the deeper conflicts and stories we created as a Korean team made the experience meaningful.”

Director Kim Seong-je shed light on the movie's premise, clarifying that the film is not a crime thriller but a human drama set in a confined, unfamiliar space. “I wanted to portray the tensions and relationships that arise among people far from home,” Kim explained.

Why Colombia?

Addressing why Colombia was chosen as the backdrop, Song explained, “The director opted for a distant South American setting to depict the hardships Guk-hee’s family faced after the IMF crisis. While the movie isn't about gunfights, the slightly chaotic atmosphere of Bogotá makes it the perfect setting.” The actor also praised the creative decision, saying, “Although fictional, I believe the backdrop aligns perfectly with the story’s intended portrayal.”

For Song Joong-ki, filming in Colombia carried an added emotional weight. His wife, Katy Louise Saunders, has Colombian roots, and many of her family members still live there. “My mother-in-law is Colombian, and I had the chance to hear stories about how the country’s past image impacted people. However, my time there revealed a vibrant and warm culture, filled with amazing food and unforgettable hospitality.”

With concerns raised about the potential for Bogota to perpetuate negative stereotypes, Song Joong-ki reassured audiences, stating, “With the rise of travel YouTubers, there’s now an abundance of positive information about Colombia. I don’t believe our film will cast a negative light on the country.”

Bogota: City of the Last Chance is set to premiere on December 31, and fans can expect intense performances and a compelling exploration of survival in the Korean diaspora. As Song Joong-ki’s first major project since becoming a father, the film holds even greater significance for the actor, who brings both passion and personal authenticity to his role.

Mark your calendars for what promises to be an unforgettable cinematic journey!
