I've been counting down the days, and the moment we've all been waiting for is finally here—Love Next Door has arrived! After what feels like an eternity, I'm ready to dive into this drama, especially since the FL is one of my all-time favorites. My expectations are sky-high, and I can't wait to see if it lives up to the hype. So, let's grab our favorite snacks, settle into our comfiest spots, and get ready to immerse ourselves in the first episode of what promises to be an unforgettable ride!
In the opening episode, sparks fly as Nam Mi Sook (Park Ji Young) and Seo Hye Sook (Jang Young Nam) engage in a fierce rivalry, each boasting about their children's impressive accomplishments. Seo Hye Sook's son, Choi Seung Hyo (Jung Hae In), is a celebrated architect with a stellar reputation, while Nam Mi Sook's daughter, Bae Seok Ryu (Jung So Min), is a rising star who graduated from a prestigious university and now works at a top global company.
But beneath the surface, Bae Seok Ryu harbors a secret—she's returned to Korea after a painful breakup. Before she can even face her parents, fate intervenes, leading her to a surprising encounter with Choi Seung Hyo in her hometown.
Just as Seok Ryu and Choi Seung Hyo were about to exchange pleasantries, her parents suddenly appeared, throwing her into a panic. Desperate to avoid their questions, Seok Ryu ducked under a rather large box, but secrets have a way of revealing themselves. When she confided in Choi Seung Hyo about her recent breakup, her parents overheard every word.
In a flurry of awkwardness, Seok Ryu used Choi Seung Hyo as a shield against her mother’s impending scolding, even taking a playful whack with a bunch of green onions. Chaos ensued as Seo Hye Suk rushed to defend her son, and her husband tried to calm the situation, momentarily defusing the tension. But Seok Ryu wasn’t done—she dropped another bombshell: “I even quit my job. I’m unemployed now,” sparking a second outburst. With the situation spiraling out of control, she and Choi Seung Hyo made a quick escape together.
The second episode dives deep into Seok Ryu and Seung Hyo’s initial encounter, uncovering the painful truth behind Seok Ryu’s resignation. After enduring relentless workplace bullying and verbal abuse, Seok Ryu reached her breaking point. Seeking solace from her ex-boyfriend, she was shattered when she caught him kissing another woman at a party.
Returning to Korea only added to her woes, as she faced her mother’s relentless nagging and the heavy expectations of being the "eldest daughter of a Korean family." Mi Sook, frustrated by Seok Ryu’s silence about her return, lashed out, her words dripping with betrayal: “Do you know how hard I worked to raise you? No matter how miserable my life was, I never regretted it because I thought all my luck went to you. But how could you betray me like this?” The tension between mother and daughter reaches a boiling point, revealing the deep emotional scars that Seok Ryu carries.
Stung by her mother’s harsh words, Seok Ryu stormed out, only to be met by Choi Seung Hyo waiting outside. Offering a comforting presence, Seung Hyo walked her home, helping to soothe her wounded heart. They shared a heart-to-heart conversation and it gave Seok Ryu some time to mull over her feelings and see things in a different perspective.
When she returned, Seok Ryu was taken aback to find her room completely redecorated. It was Seung Hyo’s sweet and unexpected gesture, a thoughtful act that bridged the gap between Seok Ryu and her mother. As she gazed at the glowing stars on the ceiling, memories of her high school days flooded back, filling the room with a sense of warmth and nostalgia.
DramaZen's Opinion
To be honest, the first episode left me a bit underwhelmed. I get that they needed to set the stage for the story, but it felt like they stretched out what could’ve been covered in five minutes. We understand she’s back home after quitting her job and ending her engagement, but did we really need a whole episode to drive that point home? Maybe it’s just me, but it felt a bit redundant. That said, I did enjoy the characters, and there’s potential here. If the writers can keep the plot moving at a good pace, this could get interesting. Otherwise, I might find myself reaching for the fast-forward button. LOL! 🤣
In the second episode, I was glad they touched on something deeply universal and relatable. Often, parents who feel they’ve fallen short of their own professional dreams try to live vicariously through their children, seeing their successes as their own triumphs and their failures as catastrophic. It’s natural for parents to want the best for their kids, but there's a fine line between good intentions and overstepping into selfishness. What parents consider to be the “best”—whether it’s career success, fame, or marriage—doesn't always align with what truly makes their children happy. In fact, it's through failures and mistakes that we grow, learning to shape a better, stronger version of ourselves.
Choi Seung Hyo is hitting all the right notes for me, especially in how he handles Seok Ryu. When he sat with her in the rain and gently said, "Don't force yourself to laugh if you feel like crying," my heart practically melted. Despite their constant, and utterly adorable, bickering, it's clear that deep down, they genuinely care for each other. They just haven’t fully realized the potential of what they could be together. Well, maybe Choi Seung Hyo has figured it out 😉, but she seems a bit oblivious to the possibilities.
