Fans of Korean dramas and theater are mourning the loss of veteran actress and voice actress Jang Mija, who passed away at the age of 84. Known for her unforgettable roles, including her iconic portrayal of a fiery mother-in-law in Couple Clinic – Love and War, Jang Mija leaves behind a legacy spanning over six decades in the entertainment industry.

According to the Korean Broadcasting Actors’ Union, Jang Mija passed away on the 27th due to a chronic illness. She is survived by her husband, actor and voice actor Park Woong, and their two sons. The family is receiving visitors at the funeral home as they grieve the loss of a beloved wife and mother.

A Career Spanning 66 Years

Jang Mija began her acting journey in 1959 with stage performances and soon became one of the first-generation voice actors at DBS Dong-A Broadcasting in 1963. Following media consolidation, she became part of KBS’s sixth generation of voice actors. Her rich, expressive voice brought life to countless characters, while her on-screen presence won her a devoted fanbase.

Her notable drama appearances include The Second Republic, Man in Crisis, Sons of Sol Pharmacy, Dazzling, and the recent Kingderland. Whether as a commanding figure in family dramas or a scene-stealing supporting character, Jang Mija’s performances were always heartfelt and memorable.

A Passion for Theater

Beyond her work on screen, Jang Mija was deeply passionate about the stage. As a member of the Theater Actors’ Association and the leader of the theater company Samgaksan, she captivated audiences in plays such as The Bird That Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Golden Pond, and Drying Peppers. Her frequent collaborations with her husband, Park Woong, in productions like Living in Golden Pond and Dancing Silver Portrait were cherished by theatergoers.

Saying Goodbye

Jang Mija’s funeral service will take place at Seoul National University Hospital Funeral Hall 4, with the burial set for the Seoul City Crematorium on January 29th at 6:00 AM.

Her passing marks the end of an era for Korean theater and television, but her remarkable contributions to the arts will forever be remembered. Fans and colleagues alike are expressing their condolences and celebrating her extraordinary legacy.
