Justice for Lee Sun Gyun: Blackmailers Sentenced Again in Appeal Trial Over Tragic Scandal
The tragic loss of beloved actor Lee Sun Gyun continues to cast a shadow over South Korea's entertainment world, but a recent court decision brings renewed focus on justice being served. The individuals behind the blackmail plot that many believe pushed Lee to the edge have once again been handed prison sentences in their appeal trial.
On May 21, the Incheon District Court’s Criminal Appeals Division 3, led by Judge Choi Seong-bae, delivered the final ruling in the appeal hearing for A, a manager at an adult entertainment bar, and B, a former actor—both charged with extortion tied to Lee’s case.
During the session, prosecutors upheld their previous call for a 7-year sentence for A, emphasizing the severity of the extortion plot that contributed to immense pressure on the late actor. While A’s legal team pleaded for leniency—arguing the blackmail was prompted by fear of a mysterious third party—they also issued a formal apology to Lee Sun Gyun’s bereaved family, acknowledging the damage done.
Notably, B’s legal representative did not attend the hearing, and no updated sentencing request was submitted. However, both defendants’ initial prison sentences remain:
-
A: 3 years and 6 months (currently serving)
-
B: 4 years and 2 months
A’s involvement runs deep: court records show A extorted approximately 300 million KRW (~$220,000 USD) from Lee in September 2023, all while also battling multiple drug charges—including methamphetamine and ketamine use. A was previously sentenced to one year in prison for those offenses and reportedly has six prior drug convictions.
As for B, the former actor reportedly impersonated a hacker to extort money from A, and later personally blackmailed Lee Sun Gyun in October 2023, securing 50 million KRW (~$36,000 USD) in the process.
This case has not only shaken the entertainment world but sparked broader discussions in South Korea around mental health, celebrity privacy, and the damaging impact of malicious blackmail. Lee Sun Gyun—best known internationally for his acclaimed performance in Parasite—was found dead in December 2023, shortly after the scandal broke and amid ongoing legal scrutiny.
Fans and colleagues have continued to mourn Lee's passing, leaving heartfelt messages and tributes online. While no punishment can bring him back, this verdict brings a measure of accountability—and perhaps, a small step toward closure.
