Romantic Boyfriend- Drama Recap (24 Episodes)
Because each episode is only 10 minutes long, I'm going to recap them all together.
Fei Fei, a game developer, works alongside her best friend, Ming Ming. The drama kicks off when Fei Fei’s mother pressures her to bring a boyfriend home for Lunar New Year—or face an arranged marriage. Desperate, Fei Fei confides in Ming Ming and decides to rent a boyfriend for three days. Despite suffering from androphobia (a fear of men), all her fears disappear the moment she meets Ji Xuan, a charming drama student. Without hesitation, Fei Fei hires him, setting the stage for a hilariously heartwarming adventure.
When Fei Fei arrives at her parents’ house with Ji Xuan, she’s immediately thrust into a competitive situation with a relative bragging about her daughter’s new boyfriend. Fei Fei quickly presents Ji Xuan, making her mother beam with pride. Over dinner, Ji Xuan reveals he’s an orphan, instantly winning over her parents—especially her mother, who seems to have her own plans. After a few too many drinks, Fei Fei discovers the guest room is a mess, and her mother slyly suggests they share a room, complete with romantic decorations. Too tipsy and exhausted to argue, Fei Fei and Ji Xuan end up snuggling through the night.
The next day, a small disagreement arises when Ji Xuan, worried about gaining weight from Fei Fei’s mother’s cooking, demands extra pay. She reluctantly agrees, but not before being flustered by Ji Xuan’s shirtless form as she takes his measurements. Their light-hearted bickering continues when they go for a walk, but things take a serious turn when they run into Peiyan, an old college acquaintance who unnerves Fei Fei. When Peiyan grabs her arm, Ji Xuan steps in, pretending to be her boyfriend and protecting her from the uncomfortable situation. Grateful, Fei Fei later wires Ji Xuan money, but can’t help feeling a spark. She even draws a game character inspired by him and gushes to Ming Ming, who warns her against falling for her rented boyfriend.
Meanwhile, Fei Fei’s parents take a vacation to give the couple space, hoping it’ll lead to something real. This gives way to more cute and funny moments between Fei Fei and Ji Xuan. However, Ji Xuan soon pulls back, thinking Fei Fei is developing feelings for him. She tracks him down on a film set, demanding a refund, but they clear the air, and he returns the extra money. Ji Xuan considers ending their arrangement, but when Fei Fei sprains her back and begs him to accompany her to her school reunion, he reluctantly agrees—especially after learning Peiyan will be there, the man who caused her androphobia.
The reunion doesn’t go smoothly, and just as Fei Fei is cornered into a card game dare with Peiyan, Ji Xuan swoops in, saving her once again by pretending to be her boyfriend. They return home and share drinks, but a drunken Fei Fei mistakes the night for a dream and kisses Ji Xuan. The next morning, they wake up in each other’s arms, though Ji Xuan insists nothing happened.
The plot thickens when Ming Ming and her boyfriend, Lin Ke, arrive with a dog in tow. Fei Fei reluctantly agrees to let them stay, and chaos ensues. Ji Xuan and Lin Ke, who already have a rocky relationship, compete to prove who’s the better boyfriend—only for it to be revealed that Lin Ke is also a rented boyfriend. A rivalry breaks out, and Ji Xuan decides to leave. But after learning about Ji Xuan’s troubled past with a previous client, Fei Fei starts to feel guilty. In a touching goodbye, she gives Ji Xuan a drawing she made of him and asks if he really wants to go. Moved, Ji Xuan decides to stay.
The four friends then embark on a camping trip, where Fei Fei becomes jealous after discovering Ji Xuan has already had his first kiss—until she learns it was with her during her drunken state. The two share another kiss, but Fei Fei is convinced it’s just a dream, leaving Ji Xuan frustrated. More shenanigans follow as Fei Fei’s father makes a surprise visit, nearly exposing the truth about their situation. Meanwhile, Fei Fei becomes obsessed with a romance game, which leads Ji Xuan and Lin Ke to hilariously reenact the characters in real life to win the girls’ attention.
As Ji Xuan grows closer to Fei Fei, Ming Ming tries to force her to admit her feelings by switching boyfriends in a bet. Jealousy ensues, and Fei Fei finally confesses to Ming Ming that Ji Xuan is hers. Ji Xuan overhears and they both acknowledge their feelings for each other.
But the fun doesn’t last long—Fei Fei’s mother returns after hearing rumors about the dog staying in the house. She quickly discovers the truth about the rented boyfriends and is furious. She arranges a blind date for Fei Fei with a doctor, pushing Ji Xuan to the sidelines. Ji Xuan watches as Fei Fei heads off to the date, but her parents drop a loud hint about the restaurant location, giving him the courage to go after her. At the restaurant, Ji Xuan sweeps Fei Fei away and finally confesses his feelings.
In a heartwarming time jump, we see Fei Fei’s game becoming a success, Lin Ke and Ming Ming still happily together, and Ji Xuan pursuing his acting career. Ji Xuan surprises Fei Fei by handing her a movie premiere ticket with a ring attached. He gets down on one knee and proposes, bringing their whirlwind romance to a perfect, happy ending.
