Love Between Lines- Episodes 21-24
When Coffee, Jealousy, and Fear Collide
Episode 21 shifts beautifully between lighthearted banter and creeping emotional tension, giving us one of the most tonally layered episodes yet.
Since Zhao Xiaoru’s return to single life, Gong Huaicong has been finding more and more excuses to linger at her coffee shop, this time even helping her experiment with new blends. One late night, after wrapping up preparations for an upcoming collaboration event, Gong pays the price for chugging an iced Americano on an empty stomach. Xiaoru steps in with a thoughtfully crafted, alcohol-free “stomach-soothing special,” and their conversation quickly turns personal.

Gong bluntly asks whether she’s been throwing herself into work just to avoid dealing with heartbreak. Instead of bristling, Xiaoru calmly challenges him to see whether her dedication fades with time. When he cheekily asks what she thinks of him, clearly fishing for praise, she cuts straight through his ego by calling him a “virgin,” leaving him completely flustered.
Desperate to recover his dignity, Gong launches into an over-the-top claim about his many girlfriends, insisting he gets a new one with every new luxury car. Unfortunately for him, Hu Xiu and Qin Xiaoyi arrive right on cue. When Gong asks Qin Xiaoyi to back him up, Qin admits Gong has owned plenty of cars, but Xiaoru coolly points out that no woman has ever sat in the passenger seat. The truth comes out: Gong’s long-standing playboy image is all performance, masking his complete lack of romantic experience.
The coffee shop’s collaboration event turns out to be a huge success, with the space packed with customers. Hu Xiu jumps in as a part-time helper to support Xiaoru, working nonstop behind the counter. Pei Zhen, having seen the event online, shows up with a congratulatory flower basket. When he notices a coffee stain on Hu Xiu’s collar, he offers her an elegant silk scarf rushed over from a nearby mall.

Hu Xiu, clearly uncomfortable with such an extravagant gesture, gently refuses and suggests he give it to someone more deserving. The rejection hits harder than expected. Pei Zhen returns home in a heavy mood, only to be confronted by his father, Pei Kanghua. Furious that Pei Zhen dared to have the finance team bring him the company’s accounts, Pei Kanghua lashes out violently, striking his son with a cane. Bloodied and shaken, Pei Zhen retreats to his room, clutching the silk scarf Hu Xiu wouldn’t accept, finally breaking down in tears.
Meanwhile, Qin Xiaoyi’s investigation into his father’s death continues to gain traction. Meeting with Uncle Xu, he discusses Huang Yide, the owner of Xinde Building Materials, a man whose accent, build, and history align disturbingly well with the shadowy figure tied to the tragedy years ago. Despite Xinde’s poor management, Huang has enjoyed steady backing from Pei Kanghua and is now expanding aggressively for a major dam project. Sensing a critical lead, Qin Xiaoyi decides it’s time to take a calculated risk.
To decompress, the group plans a three-day trip to Zhejiang. Qin Xiaoyi is quietly disappointed to discover it won’t be a private getaway with Hu Xiu after all, as Gong Huaicong and Xiaoru are joining. On the drive, Hu Xiu starts applying sunscreen, and Qin Xiaoyi casually extends his hand for her to help him as well. Gong’s teasing commentary is swiftly shut down by Xiaoru.
Since becoming a couple, Hu Xiu and Qin Xiaoyi are rarely apart. Though Qin Xiaoyi often portrays cold, untouchable characters in his murder mystery games, he’s openly affectionate and almost clingy with Hu Xiu in real life. Still, Gong’s offhand mention of Pei Zhen and the silk scarf sparks a flicker of jealousy. Hu Xiu, sensing it, playfully waves a custom café napkin and pretends it’s the scarf, prompting a cute, silly moment where the two stand together like a “compass” drawing circles.

At the resort, Hu Xiu rooms with Xiaoru, while Qin Xiaoyi shares a suite with Gong. The next day is blissfully calm: cherry blossoms, photos, and a Ferris wheel ride that feels like something straight out of a postcard. But the peace doesn’t last. Gong pulls Qin Xiaoyi away for a video meeting with a colleague about virtual reality effects, leaving Hu Xiu to wander the scenic area alone.
When the meeting ends, Qin Xiaoyi realizes he can’t reach Hu Xiu. Panic sets in quickly. Nearby tourists mention an accident at the observatory, rumors of someone falling, blood everywhere. The words strike like a blade, dragging Qin Xiaoyi back to the moment he lost his father. His face drains of color as fear takes over, and without hesitation, he runs toward the scene, terrified of what he might find.
When Fear Fades, Love Takes Root
Episode 22 opens with pure panic and ends with something that finally feels like home.
Qin Xiaoyi races toward the accident site, his mind already spiraling toward the worst. The relief is overwhelming when he realizes the injured person isn’t Hu Xiu at all. Just as his heart is about to give out, her voice calls out from behind him. Hu Xiu is perfectly safe, her phone had simply died after she took a shuttle down the mountain to exchange game coins because the hotel had run out.
The tension melts instantly. Qin Xiaoyi pulls her into a fierce, almost desperate hug, admitting that no matter what she prayed for at the temple, he hopes more than anything that her wishes come true. Later that night, the two escape the noise of the city and drive to a quiet observation deck. Beneath a sky full of stars, Qin Xiaoyi finally shares the memory that has haunted him for years, the sudden disappearance of his father during childhood and the tragedy that followed.

He confesses that without Hu Xiu, he would feel like a balloon drifting without a string, untethered and lost. Hu Xiu gently promises to hold onto him no matter what, grounding him in a way no one ever has. Wrapped in the stillness of the night, they share a soft, heartfelt kiss that feels like a turning point for them both.
Back at the hotel, things are far less poetic. Gong Huaicong and Zhao Xiaorou drink heavily in the lounge, both trying to numb their lingering heartbreak. Xiaorou finishes an entire bottle of wine, while Gong stubbornly tries to keep up. Predictably, they both pass out on the couches and wake up the next morning sore, embarrassed, and scrambling to get back to their rooms. Xiaorou worries Hu Xiu will interrogate her, completely unaware that Hu Xiu never came back that night either.
On the drive home, the tone shifts again. Qin Xiaoyi notices a black Buick sedan tailing them and immediately recognizes the car and its driver from his years living under Pei Kanghua’s roof. Realizing Hu Xiu is being watched, he quietly changes plans. Instead of taking her back to the lane, he brings the still-sleeping Hu Xiu to his upscale apartment, trusting the building’s tight security to keep her safe.

Hu Xiu remains blissfully unaware of the danger. She settles into his home easily, discovering he’s already registered her fingerprint for the door lock and stocked the fridge with all her favorite foods. With no clothes of her own, she borrows one of his oversized shirts, unintentionally softening the cold, minimalist space just by being there. She stays up late waiting for him to come home so they can eat together, giving Qin Xiaoyi a feeling of warmth and belonging he’s never truly had before.
Determined to put a stop to the threat, Qin Xiaoyi visits Forma to return a lunchbox to Pei Zhen on Hu Xiu’s behalf and delivers a warning while he’s there. He demands that Pei Zhen make his father stop surveilling Hu Xiu immediately. Pei Zhen is stunned but admits it fits his father’s controlling nature all too well.

Meanwhile, Pei Kanghua faces a mess of his own making. Mr. Huang, a factory owner shut down for excessive emissions, begs for financial help after mortgaging everything and falling into debt with loan sharks. Pei Kanghua coldly refuses, dismissing him without a shred of compassion. Shaken and furious, Pei Zhen confronts his father, insisting that Hu Xiu has nothing to do with him and should never have been targeted.
Pei Kanghua responds with violence and contempt, striking his son and berating him for getting involved with a woman without even knowing her background. The encounter leaves Pei Zhen deeply unsettled, sensing that his father’s obsession with lineage and control is tied to something far darker than he previously realized.

Amid all this, Qin Xiaoyi quietly begins reshaping his future. When Gong Huaicong comes by to discuss new murder mystery scripts, Qin Xiaoyi shocks him by formally handing over management of the club. He admits he no longer wants to be trapped in his old life and is ready to let it go.
The moment is interrupted when Qin Xiaoyi’s mother arrives with soup and casually mentions that a childhood acquaintance named Luna is back in town and hoping to reconnect. Qin Xiaoyi shuts it down immediately, making it clear where his priorities lie. He even warns Gong Huaicong not to bring Luna up around Hu Xiu, unwilling to let anything, no matter how small, shake the trust he’s worked so hard to build.
Jealousy, Truths, and the Price of the Past
Episode 23 wastes no time stirring the emotional pot, blending relationship jitters with long-buried secrets coming violently to the surface.
It all starts at Zhao Xiaorou’s coffee shop, where Gong Huaicong shows up carrying some extremely unhelpful gossip. He casually mentions overhearing Qin Xiaoyi’s mother arranging a blind date for him with a childhood neighbor, someone whose family lived next door and who even went to the same school. Hu Xiu tries to brush it off, but her hands give her away as she fumbles with the coffee jars, her jealousy written all over her face.
Gong doesn’t help matters by adding that Xiaoyi was even more stubborn back when he lived in the U.S. and never listened to his mother anyway. Still, he admits that Xiaoyi has always been popular with women, a comment that clearly rattles Hu Xiu more than she wants to admit.

Unable to sit with the uncertainty, Hu Xiu turns detective. With help from Pei Zhen, she gets the details of the meeting and heads to a hotel to see things for herself. From a distance, she watches Xiaoyi chatting easily with another woman and even handing her a gift. Her heart sinks, and just as she’s about to slip away, Pei Zhen catches her in the act.
Suspicious about her being there on a Saturday, Pei Zhen drags Hu Xiu outside and presses her for answers about her relationship with Xiaoyi. Before things can spiral further, Xiaoyi himself appears and shuts it down immediately. Without hesitation, he declares that Hu Xiu is his girlfriend and takes her hand to make it unmistakably clear. Pei Zhen is left completely stunned.
Once they drive away, Xiaoyi pulls over beneath a row of trees to clear the misunderstanding. He gently lifts Hu Xiu onto the car hood and explains that the woman is just an old neighbor who recently got engaged, the gift was nothing more than a polite congratulations. To fully smooth things over, he surprises Hu Xiu with front-row concert tickets, a sweet peace offering that finally melts her lingering doubts.

While their relationship steadies, Pei Zhen spirals. At a formal family dinner, he drinks heavily, clearly unraveling. After cutting his hand on a plant, the memory of Hu Xiu once bandaging his wound pushes him to visit her old apartment. When a neighbor tells him she moved out long ago, the reality finally sinks in: Hu Xiu has chosen her life with Xiaoyi, and there’s no space left for him.
At work, Xiaoyi proves he’s just as decisive professionally as he is emotionally. By reviewing supplier data, he uncovers several shell companies Zhuling used to fake transactions and manipulate financial reports. He immediately reports the fraud to Lyman, resulting in Zhuling being cut from the project entirely. Pei Zhen is shocked that Xiaoyi would allow a major contractor to be dropped so cleanly, but Xiaoyi calmly reveals he’s been prepared for this since the Spring Festival. He refuses to be boxed in by limited choices.
Instead, Xiaoyi introduces Mr. Shen, a ceramic factory owner, as their new supplier for the 3D tiles. During a meeting at D Studio, he openly credits Hu Xiu for persistently tracking down the contact that ultimately saved the project from Zhuling’s collapse. It’s a quiet but powerful acknowledgment of her value, both professionally and personally.

That evening, the long-awaited concert finally arrives. Swept up in the music and lights, Xiaoyi and Hu Xiu share a passionate kiss, the kind that feels earned after all the tension. But the happiness is short-lived.
Elsewhere, Hu Xiu’s father, Hu Ding, receives an anonymous envelope containing documents that expose a devastating truth: Xiaoyi’s biological father, Qin Yuze, was the architect behind the stadium collapse that left Hu Ding permanently injured. Overcome with shock and rage, Hu Ding wanders into the street and is struck by a car.

At the concert, Hu Xiu gets the call and breaks down instantly. At the same time, Xiaoyi checks his phone and discovers his real identity and his father’s past, are being exposed online. Despite the chaos unfolding around him, Xiaoyi stays focused on Hu Xiu and rushes her to the hospital.
Hu Ding is diagnosed with a fractured leg. As Hu Xiu’s mother panics, Xiaoyi quietly takes control, handling the admission process and even using Hu Ding’s digital insurance card to complete the paperwork. It’s a small but telling moment that shows where his priorities truly lie.
In the aftermath, Pei Kanghua confronts Pei Zhen, and the truth finally comes out. Pei Zhen admits he played a role in exposing Xiaoyi’s past, bitterly confessing that after losing everything else, he needed to keep at least one thing for himself.
When the Past Comes Knocking and Love Refuses to Leave
Episode 24 is where Love Between Lines really leans into its emotional weight, forcing every character to confront truths they’ve been running from and reminding us just how painful inherited history can be.
The episode opens in chaos as Hu Xiu rushes to the hospital after learning her father has been hit by a car. While she’s barely holding herself together, Xiao Zhiyu quietly takes control behind the scenes, arranging top-tier doctors and a private ward without drawing attention to himself. It’s one of those understated moments that perfectly captures who he is when things fall apart.

Once Hu Xiu’s father stabilizes, the real blow lands. Her mother reveals that the accident wasn’t random, Hu Ding lost control after discovering documents exposing Xiao Zhiyu’s true identity as Qin Yuze’s son. For her parents, the wound from the stadium collapse never healed, and the idea of their daughter being with the architect’s son is unbearable. What follows is a devastating confrontation where history finally crashes into the present.
Hu Xiu explains everything Xiao Zhiyu never knew. After the stadium disaster and his father’s death, he was sent overseas, shielded from the pain left behind. Her father, meanwhile, had been the stadium’s lighting engineer, permanently injured in the collapse. Worse still, his closest friend and foreman, Han Chuan, died in the rubble. The reveal is crushing for both of them, and Hu Xiu, overwhelmed by guilt and grief, tells Xiao Zhiyu that loving him was a mistake she can never undo.
As the scandal explodes online, Pei Kanghua realizes the leak was deliberate. Pei Zhen admits he exposed Xiao Zhiyu’s past out of bitterness, wanting him to suffer after losing everything else. Instead of satisfaction, it only earns him his father’s disappointment and sets off consequences far bigger than he anticipated.

Hu Xiu moves back home, distancing herself from Xiao Zhiyu while her father recovers. Before fully letting go, she shares the heartbreaking story of Han Chuan, who stayed on the stadium project despite his pregnant wife and never came home. Her father has carried that guilt for over twenty years, visiting his grave every year. Their love, she says, was like a beautiful dream she has no choice but to wake up from.
At work, the divide is clear. Gong Huaicong stands firmly by Xiao Zhiyu, arguing that a child should never be punished for a parent’s sins. Xiao Zhiyu himself faces the storm head-on, releasing a public statement acknowledging his identity and offering to personally shoulder any losses. Instead of abandoning him, his team stays; proof that character, once earned, doesn’t vanish overnight.
Even Hu Xiu can’t fully sever her heart. When Pei Zhen visits the hospital and tries to win her favor while belittling Xiao Zhiyu’s family, she shuts him down immediately, fiercely defending the man she just broke up with. In that moment, Pei Zhen finally realizes he’s already lost.

Just when things seem bleakest, the Lyman project takes an unexpected turn. Mr. Xie reveals he knew Qin Yuze and remembers his belief that a building’s soul is what makes it last. Impressed by Xiao Zhiyu’s integrity, he chooses to move forward with the project, scandal be damned.
The episode closes on a quiet, powerful note. Hu Xiu returns to Xiao Zhiyu’s apartment to retrieve her laptop, only to find the place in disarray. She starts cleaning out of habit and maybe longing, before running into Xiao Zhiyu’s mother. Instead of pushing her away, Xiao Wanyue gently invites her to stay and calls her son home. When Xiao Zhiyu arrives, he doesn’t hesitate. He takes Hu Xiu’s hand and introduces her to his mother as the woman he loves.
