Fated Hearts (Book 3)- By: Tina Marie
Chapter 27 - The Intruder
Katelyn slipped into the bathroom, quietly changing into her pajamas. She glanced at the mirror, her thoughts racing. She had a nagging feeling that Lucy might still try something, but as the minutes ticked by, doubt crept in. Maybe she won’t come after all, she thought.
She slid into bed next to Lucas, snuggling close to his warm body. His soft breathing comforted her, and just as her eyes began to flutter shut, the sound of the door chime jolted her awake. Someone had swiped a card.
The door to their room opened slowly, and a figure crept inside.
"Lucas, are you asleep?" a familiar voice whispered. "It’s me, Lucy. I thought you might be bored."
Katelyn froze beneath the blankets, her heart pounding. She stayed perfectly still, watching Lucy as she walked further into the dark room, whispering to herself.
"The drugs must have worked," Lucy murmured. "He’s sound asleep. He’ll never know what happened. I’ll just take a few pictures of us in bed, and then I’ll sleep here tonight. Poor Katelyn will be so hurt." A low laugh escaped her lips.
Katelyn’s fury boiled beneath her calm exterior as she listened to Lucy’s vile plan. She watched from beneath the covers as Lucy moved closer to the bed, eyes narrowing suspiciously.
Lucy hesitated, staring at the figure under the sheets. Wait... something’s not right, she thought. That looks like two people in the bed. Did someone beat me to it?
With a quick, decisive movement, Lucy ripped the blankets down, revealing Katelyn sitting up with a smug smile.
"Surprise!" Katelyn said, her tone dripping with satisfaction. "Were you expecting me?"
Lucy gasped, her face twisting in shock and anger. "You! What are you doing here?"
Katelyn raised an eyebrow. "Shouldn’t I be asking you that? Why are you in my fiancé’s room? And how did you get the room card?"
Lucy crossed her arms, her voice defiant. "Lucas gave it to me earlier."
Katelyn’s eyes flashed with anger. "You’re a damn liar. He would never give you anything."
"You must not know your fiancé as well as you think," Lucy sneered.
Katelyn leaned forward, her voice cold. "Shut your mouth before I shut it for you."
Lucy smirked, trying to maintain her bravado. "What’s wrong? You don’t like thinking your ‘perfect’ fiancé isn’t so perfect?"
"I’m warning you," Katelyn said, her voice low and dangerous.
"Whatever," Lucy spat. "Believe what you want, but Lucas gave me the card. How else would I have gotten it?"
Katelyn narrowed her eyes, watching Lucy carefully. "Knowing you, you probably bribed someone at the front desk."
Lucy’s face faltered, her eyes widening for a split second before she regained composure. But Katelyn saw the flicker of surprise. She knows, Lucy thought, panic creeping in.
"Cat got your tongue?" Katelyn taunted, crossing her arms. "You’re mad because I know the truth, aren’t you?"
"I don’t know what you’re talking about," Lucy stammered, her voice wavering.
Katelyn stood from the bed, her voice fierce. "You dared to drug my man, thinking you could seduce him? You’re pathetic, Lucy."
In one swift motion, Katelyn grabbed Lucy by the arm and shoved her toward the door. "Get the hell out before I report you for breaking into our room."
But Lucy wasn’t backing down. She pushed Katelyn back, her eyes wild with rage. "Who do you think you are to tell me what to do?" she hissed, pulling a knife from her bag. "I’ll kill you."
At that moment, Lucas shot up from the bed, his eyes blazing with fury. "Touch her, and you’ll die."
Before Lucy could react, Lucas moved swiftly, grabbing her arm and knocking the knife from her hand. He shoved her into a chair, holding her down as she struggled.
"Kate," Lucas barked, his voice calm but commanding. "Call the front desk and report her."
Katelyn rushed to the hotel phone, dialing quickly. "Hello? Someone stole a room card and broke into our room. Can you send security to room 405, please?"
She hung up the phone, her heart still pounding as she turned to Lucas.
"Go sit on the bed," Lucas instructed, his voice softening as he glanced at her. "I’ll handle this."
Katelyn nodded, sitting down on the edge of the bed, her eyes never leaving Lucas as he stood over Lucy, holding her firmly in place. She could feel the adrenaline still coursing through her veins, but one thing was clear—Lucy’s plan had failed, and they had won this battle.
But Katelyn knew this wasn’t over yet.
