Chapter 73 - Shadows of the Past
Alpha Reggie sat in my desk chair, his broad shoulders dwarfing the small frame as he fixed me with a steady, sympathetic gaze. Despite the warmth in his voice, there was a commanding undercurrent that told me this was a conversation I couldn’t easily dodge.
“What about this third person, Selene? The one you say orchestrates your attacks?” he began, his tone measured. “Are you ever going to reveal her identity? It could help us get the justice you deserve.”
I inhaled deeply, bracing myself. “No, sir. I can’t prove what she’s done without a shadow of a doubt, and there’s no point in starting a back-and-forth. She’s too good at manipulating situations.”
His eyebrows lifted slightly, a silent prompt for me to continue.
“She’s always been careful, covering her tracks and twisting the narrative. Every time I tried to speak up before, it just got me in more trouble. People think I’m lying or jealous. Fighting her hasn’t worked, and I’m done trying. Karma will catch up to her, and when it does, I hope I’m there to see it.”
Alpha Reggie leaned back slightly, the chair creaking under his weight. “What if she moves on to someone else now that you’re gone? Or worse, if she’s involved in the breach that targeted Luna Queen Anne and Luna Ava?”
“I don’t think she’ll turn on anyone else unless they cross her. She thrives on control and doesn’t like competition. As long as no one threatens her claim to the Alpha twins, she’ll leave them alone.”
He frowned, clearly skeptical. “You’re certain?”
“That’s part of why I worked so hard with the pups back home—to give them a chance to defend themselves, to run if they needed to. But her real target was me. My rank, my association with Aaron and Ryan—it made me a threat to her status.”
I sat up straighter, the conviction in my voice unwavering. “If she wants that status so badly, she’ll have to fight for it. And if someone’s foolish enough to choose her, that’s on them. The Moon Goddess doesn’t reward deceit.”
Reggie studied me for a long moment before speaking again. “And if we find evidence tying her to the breach?”
“Then I’ll bring forward everything I know. But until then, I won’t let my past with her skew your investigation.”
His mouth quirked into a small, knowing smile. “You’d make a good lawyer, you know. That’s exactly how Warrior Hogan handles these things—careful and calculated.”
We both chuckled softly, the tension easing for a moment.
“Well,” he said, standing, “I won’t press you further—for now. But if you ever need to talk about it, you have allies here. I hope you learn to trust that.”
“Thank you, sir. And…” I hesitated, my voice softening. “I really do appreciate you giving me this opportunity. You didn’t have to.”
Reggie waved off my gratitude, his smile turning warmer. “None of that, Selene. If anything, Drew would’ve had my head if I hadn’t helped you. He’s been beside himself for weeks, desperate for updates.”
I blinked, stunned. “Drew? Really?”
Reggie chuckled. “Every day, without fail, he asked about you. And he wasn’t the only one. The boys from Blue Crescent—Aaron, Ryan, Ethan, Leo, and Devin—they’ve all been asking their supervisors about your condition. You’ve bonded with them more deeply than you realize.”
My throat tightened at his words, a mix of guilt and longing rising in my chest. They cared—really cared—even after everything.
“They’re here too,” Reggie continued. “They’re participating in leadership training on the other side of the grounds. The separation was intentional. You’ve been through a lot, and they need to focus without distractions. But knowing you’re out of the hospital will bring them some peace.”
I nodded, unsure of what to say.
“The Luna will visit you once a month,” he added. “You’re in a unique situation, so that’s the only contact we’re allowing. You need to focus, Selene. No distractions.”
“Yes, sir,” I said, trying to suppress the pang of loneliness. I knew he was right.
Reggie placed a firm hand on my shoulder, his expression softening. “You’re strong, Selene. Stronger than you know. I can’t wait to see what you’ll achieve here.”
As he left, Warrior Hogan stepped forward, his usual stoic demeanor tinged with what almost looked like pride.
“Ready for the grand tour, Little One?” Warrior Osiston asked.
I stood, excitement bubbling beneath my nerves. “Lead the way.”
