“Love, Chaos, and a Whole Lot of Tension”

Hello, Motel California fans! Buckle up, because Episodes 7 and 8 gave us everything—steamy kisses, emotional confessions, dramatic confrontations, and some good ol’ K-drama chaos. Our favorite pair, Kang-hee and Yeon-soo, are playing the most frustrating (but deliciously entertaining) game of push-and-pull, while their past and present collide in ways that make our hearts ache. Let’s dive in!

Episode 7: “Are We Just Friends?”

We pick up right where we left off—with Kang-hee and Yeon-soo tangled up in a kiss that’s been simmering for episodes. Just when things are heating up, who comes knocking? Chun-pil. Because nothing says romance like your dad showing up with food and drinks.

Kang-hee hides Yeon-soo and tries to keep up the act with Chun-pil and Seok-kyung, but her mind is definitelyelsewhere. Later, she finds Yeon-soo on the rooftop, and they finally have a heart-to-heart. They both bring up old wounds—Yeon-soo breaking his promise to go to Seoul, Kang-hee pushing him away—and just when we think they’ll move forward, Kang-hee insists, “We should stop.” Yeon-soo agrees. (But we all know they don’t mean it.)

Cue the pettiest avoidance game ever. Yeon-soo stops talking to her, dodges lunch at the same restaurant, and even leaves her a new scarf but refuses to take the one she got him. These two are so bad at pretending they don’t care.

Later, they end up building a donkey house together (K-drama love language: construction projects), and Kang-hee jokes that Yeon-soo should bring his future wife and kids to the dream house she’s planning. He doesn’t react, but we see a flashback of little Kang-hee drawing a house in the snow with a special room for Yeon-soo. THE FEELS.

Meanwhile, Yeon-soo and Seok-kyung end up drunk together, arguing about who “deserves” Kang-hee more. In classic comedy fashion, they wake up in the same bed, absolutely horrified. But hey, at least Seok-kyung suggests they be friends?

The drama ramps up when Nan-woo receives concert tickets and a bouquet from Yeon-soo… or so she thinks. Turns out, it’s actually his mom (Soon-ja) scheming to get Yeon-soo to propose at the performance (ma’am, please). Kang-hee finds out and storms back to the motel, only to randomly accept flowers from a dejected Seung-eon and shove them in Yeon-soo’s face, declaring they’re from “a man.”

The next day, Kang-hee and Yeon-soo coincidentally end up on the same bus to Seoul. She falls asleep on his shoulder (heart eyes), and he asks her for a tour of the city. Their Seoul adventure includes visiting her office, eating together, and questioning if “friends” do all this (answer: NO). When they get to her home, she proudly shows off her space, and Yeon-soo—full of admiration—hugs her. Then she asks, “Is it okay for friends to kiss?” and steps closer.

ROLL CREDITS.

Episode 8: “Kissing? Friends Don’t Do That”

We begin right where we left off, but Yeon-soo pushes her away. He insists they’re just friends (LIES), and they drink to her new home. Cue some hilarious misunderstandings—Kang-hee considers buying a condom, thinking Yeon-soo hinted at it, but he was literally talking about a lightbulb. When he goes to buy it himself, he also contemplates buying a condom (these two).

Drunken Yeon-soo gets way too close, asking if Kang-hee has really changed, nearly kissing her before she panics and runs to the bathroom. By the time she works up the courage to come back, he’s passed out on the floor. She kisses him on the forehead (dying) and later, he carries her to bed when he wakes up.

Morning awkwardness ensues, made worse by a surprise run-in with Seok-kyung, who is very salty about their dynamic. While Yeon-soo and Kang-hee pretend to be chill, Seok-kyung vents to Esther, admitting he’s definitelyjealous.

But just when we think they’ll part ways again, Yeon-soo yanks Kang-hee off the bus home. He wants one day in Seoul, imagining what life would have been like if he had gone with her years ago. They wander the city, share a bed (innocently), and even battle it out at an arcade.

BUT THEN, drama bomb. Soon-ja finds out they’re together and immediately starts scheming. She calls Kang-hee and lets her have it, making her realize—no matter how much they love each other, their parents’ history is always in the way.

Back in Hana-eup, Soon-ja is waiting for them at the bus stop (chills). She loses it on Kang-hee, accusing her of taking Yeon-soo away. Yeon-soo literally has to hold her back as Kang-hee walks away.

And then we get hit with the mother of all revelations.

It turns out Soon-ja hates Kang-hee’s family because her mother had an affair with Yeon-soo’s father, leading to his death in a car accident. Yeon-soo finally snaps and tells his mother that he was there, that he preferred Kang-hee’s mother over Soon-ja, and that he’s done putting his mom’s feelings above his own.

Then—because this show loves us—Yeon-soo runs to Kang-hee, grabs her hand, and KISSES HER LIKE HE MEANS IT. He finally asks her out, and I don’t know about you guys, but I was SCREAMING.

DramaZen's Opinion

Opinion of Motel California (2025)

WE ARE WINNING, BUT AT WHAT COST?

Episodes 7 & 8 gave us so much—heartache, humor, tension, and finally, Yeon-soo making a real move. But the drama is far from over.

🔥 Favorite moments?

  • Yeon-soo and Seok-kyung waking up in the same bed. Pure gold.
  • Kang-hee pretending she’s not jealous while very obviously being jealous.
  • THAT. FINAL. KISS. (We deserved that after all this slow-burn angst!)

💔 Most stressful moments?

  • Soon-ja’s relentless hatred for Kang-hee.
  • Yeon-soo pushing Kang-hee away when she made the first move (sir, WHY).
  • The parental drama bombshell.

With Yeon-soo finally standing up to his mother and choosing Kang-hee, the stakes have never been higher. Will Kang-hee accept his love despite everything? Will their parents’ past tear them apart again? And will Seok-kyung ever stop being salty?

I NEED EPISODE 9 NOW!!!!

What do you guys think? Are we finally in the clear, or is another storm coming? Let’s scream in the comments!
