Welcome to my recap of the premiere episode of Motel California, a show that wastes no time plunging us into its eerie yet poignant world. Episode 1 is a masterclass in weaving together past and present, leaving us yearning to unravel the tangled web of Kang-hee and Yeon-soo’s lives.
Episode 1 - A Hauntingly Beautiful Start
We open with a chilling scene: young Kang-hee stands in the woods, her defiant stance protecting her friends from bullies. A bolt of lightning strikes a tree, taking down one of the bullies. The sight of little Kang-hee smiling as chaos unfolds is a moment that sets the tone for her enigmatic character.
We’re soon introduced to Ji Chun-pil, a middle-aged man who hands Yeon-soo an envelope of cash for Kang-hee before departing mysteriously. Yeon-soo, hesitant but loyal, follows through and meets Kang-hee at the dimly lit Motel California, which her father owns but has fallen into disrepair. The encounter between these two childhood friends is steeped in an uneasy intimacy as they share a tender yet bittersweet connection. Kang-hee is desperate to escape the motel—and the town—and convinces Yeon-soo to sleep with her before she leaves for Seoul.
Fast-forward to 2023, and we find that time has transformed them both. Yeon-soo is now a quiet veterinarian, while Kang-hee struggles in Seoul, fighting against judgment and rejection as she tries to rebuild her life. Their separate journeys unfold in parallel: Yeon-soo tending to animals and holding onto memories, while Kang-hee wrestles with her ambition and the harsh reality of her lower university degree.
When Kang-hee meets Jung-goo, a site manager who sees her potential, a glimmer of hope emerges. But even after impressing a client with her designs, Kang-hee faces the humiliation of being dismissed by a condescending CEO. Her fiery outburst in response to the disrespect is both cathartic and heartbreaking.
As Kang-hee battles her way through Seoul, visions of Yeon-soo haunt her at every turn. Meanwhile, Yeon-soo mourns the loss of his grandfather and prepares for the funeral. Despite everyone’s doubts, Kang-hee returns to the small town for the ceremony. In the final, deeply emotional moments of the episode, a gaunt Yeon-soo is the first to greet her, pulling her into a hug. It’s a reunion ten years in the making, and their mutual recognition hits like a tidal wave of emotions.

Episode 2 - “Ghosts of the Past”
We open with a somber yet tension-filled scene at Yeon-soo’s grandfather’s funeral. Chun-pil, ever the observant one, knows Yeon-soo is anxiously waiting for Kang-hee to show up. And when she does, it’s like time stops. Their reunion is brief but loaded with emotion. Kang-hee pays her respects to the deceased, but in a surreal twist, she imagines the grandfather’s portrait speaking to her. The cryptic exchange hints at a dark shared past, but before we can process it, chaos ensues.
Kang-hee, unable to bear the whispers of the nosy neighbors, storms out of the hall. Yeon-soo follows, urging her to eat before leaving town, while another friend, Seung-eon, suggests she meet Ah-reum, a fellow member of their childhood gang. A flashback shows us the close-knit (and often teased) group: Kang-hee, Yeon-soo, Han-woo, Seung-eon, and Ah-reum, nicknamed “The Gangsters” for their resilience and camaraderie.
When present-day Kang-hee confronts one of their old bullies, Heon-yeol, at the funeral, it’s a moment of pure catharsis. She reminds him of the lightning incident from their youth, only for him to mock her and escalate things by throwing a drink. She retaliates with a bowl of noodles (iconic), but it’s Yeon-soo who steps in to defend her honor when Heon-yeol goes too far. The punch Yeon-soo lands is deeply satisfying, cementing his loyalty to Kang-hee, even after years apart.
Back in Seoul, Kang-hee is still battling her insecurities and the harsh realities of adult life. A chance meeting with Jung-goo and Seok-kyung leads to unexpected opportunities, including a lucrative design offer that restores some of her lost confidence. But the loneliness of her goshiwon life contrasts sharply with her newfound career momentum. Even her old friend Ah-reum senses the distance Kang-hee tries to maintain.
Meanwhile, Yeon-soo’s quiet life is stirred when a spirited girl, Nan-woo, appears on the scene, clearly taken with him. Her interest adds a layer of romantic tension, especially as Kang-hee, despite her denials, seems unsettled by the idea of Yeon-soo moving on.
The episode’s climax brings Kang-hee face-to-face with her past and present at the same time. On her birthday, she plans to use Seok-kyung as a shield against the possessive influences in her life, but when she arrives at her hotel room, it’s Yeon-soo who’s waiting for her. The moment is electric, made even more complex by Seok-kyung’s clueless comment about “transferring ownership.” Yeon-soo and Kang-hee’s shared history simmers under the surface, threatening to boil over.
In a flashback, we see how Yeon-soo’s determination to find Kang-hee in Seoul began, only to be met with her rejection at every turn. His lingering love and Kang-hee’s reluctance to face her emotions make their dynamic all the more heartbreaking.

The first episode of Motel California is nothing short of mesmerizing. The show’s ability to juxtapose the eerie mysticism of its opening scenes with the raw, grounded emotions of Kang-hee and Yeon-soo’s reunion is remarkable. The past and present blend seamlessly, building a sense of foreboding and longing that hooks viewers instantly.
The performances are stellar, particularly Kang-hee’s portrayal of a woman hardened by her struggles but still yearning for something more. Yeon-soo’s quiet resilience provides a poignant contrast, making their dynamic all the more compelling.
