This week, emotions are skyrocketing, ranging from fiery romance and intense jealousy to all-out revenge, but our deerlings are here to lighten the mood. Their mischievous antics help us navigate the turbulent rollercoaster of our main and secondary characters’ tangled love lives. Get ready for a wild ride through passion, drama, and plenty of laughs!

The morning after Ji-hwan’s endearingly childish jealousy and his surprisingly heartfelt kiss with Eun-ha, our lovebirds are living in their own vibrant fairytale. Eun-ha awakens to a vase brimming with sunflowers, their bright blooms reflecting the smile on her face. Both she and Ji-hwan approach their day with a meticulousness that screams they’re determined to impress each other. Their efforts culminate in a charmingly dramatic entrance into the dining room, setting the stage for a breakfast filled with palpable excitement and undeniable chemistry.

Honestly, the slo-mo scenes could have been a bit much if it weren’t for the deerlings, who transformed the show’s self-referential humor from cringy to comedic genius. Their over-the-top reactions and bewildered attempts to decode Ji-hwan and Eun-ha’s antics are pure gold. Their hilarious commentary and antics not only provide much-needed relief from the secondhand embarrassment but also make the whole experience immensely entertaining. Even more hilarious is the fact that only half of our deerlings have the emotional intelligence to realize that Ji-hwan and Eun-ha are officially a couple. The reactions are a riot, ranging from stunned silence to wild speculation. The real comedy gold comes when Ji-hwan struts into the room with a newfound swagger that screams either “head-over-heels in love” or “completely unhinged” and, of course, it’s a delightful mix of both!

After breakfast, Ji-hwan and Eun-ha part ways, but Ji-hwan, still buzzing from love, can’t bear the separation for long. Overcome by his craving to see her, he ditches work for a spontaneous surprise visit while Eun-ha shops for props for her latest videos. What follows is a sugary-sweet dating montage brimming with smiles, couple’s headbands, and playful nods to Uhm Tae-gu’s past roles. Watch as our OTP immerses themselves in the unfiltered joy and freedom of a new relationship, making every moment together a pure delight.

Just as Ji-hwan and Eun-ha are enjoying their date, the power flickers out in the bustling underground marketplace, plunging them into semi-darkness and causing a few distressed kids to start crying. But this blackout turns into Ji-hwan’s moment to shine! With a determined glint in his eye, he transforms into an impromptu hero, dazzling the frightened children with a mesmerizing shadow puppet show. As his fingers craft a menagerie of animal shapes against the wall, Eun-ha is transported back to her childhood, reminded of the friend she’s always held dear. On their way home, she shares this poignant realization with Ji-hwan, deepening their connection even further.

This moment would be perfect for Ji-hwan to finally unveil the secrets of his past, but he’s not quite ready to confront those ghosts. Instead, he’s moved by Eun-ha’s heartfelt confession about how their childhood friendship inspired her career and her mission to create joyful, lasting memories for children. In response, Ji-hwan subtly opens up, hinting that his own memories of her were the lifeline that sustained him through his darkest days. The emotional exchange deepens their bond, hinting at a future where they might share their hidden scars and triumphs. While the slapstick humor and outrageous antics in this drama are a blast, it’s these tender moments that truly captivate me. When the story shifts from laugh-out-loud comedy to poignant, heart-to-heart exchanges, it beautifully highlights how our OTP is not only growing closer but also evolving as individuals. These emotional beats add depth to their journey and make their connection all the more compelling.

This week, the comedic moments seemed to hit a few off notes, sometimes undercutting the character growth we’ve seen in recent episodes. Take Ji-hwan, for instance. After a day of deepening his bond with Eun-ha and firmly establishing himself as her boyfriend, he dives headfirst into an online showdown with Hyun-woo over her new video account.

While the boys' digital sparring and flashy animations are undeniably entertaining, they feel at odds with the calm, mature Ji-hwan we’ve come to appreciate. While it was no surprise that Hyun-woo’s recovery from his crush on Eun-ha would take time, his latest public display of pettiness starkly contrasts with the composed acceptance he showed when she first rejected him. And just when you thought it couldn’t get more complicated, Hyun-woo and Ji-hwan cross paths once more, with Hyun-woo stubbornly declaring that he’s not ready to give up on Eun-ha. Seriously? She’s made her choice—time for him to face reality!

I have to give the boys…yes, "boys" is the perfect term here after their antics, a nod for flipping the usual K-drama script. Instead of the typical over-the-top love triangle with two women competing for a man, these guys are turning the trope on its head. Their antics bring a fresh, unexpected twist to the genre's classic drama, making their rivalry all the more entertaining. In stark contrast to the fiery love triangle drama between Ji-hwan and Hyun-woo, the one involving Eun-ha and Ye-na is refreshingly composed, thanks to Eun-ha’s unwavering poise. Despite Ye-na’s desperate attempts to claim superiority with the pitiful claim of knowing Ji-hwan longer, if only she knew the whole story, Eun-ha remains unshaken. Her confidence in herself and her trust in Ji-hwan’s feelings shine through, proving once again why she’s the one we’re all rooting for. (You go, girl!)

Since we're diving into this week’s plotline letdowns, let’s address the biggest letdown of all: Il-young and Mi-ho. While Eun-ha and Ji-hwan are wrapped up in their romantic whirlwind and deftly dodging love rivals, our secondary couple has been spiraling—mostly thanks to Il-young's chaotic behavior. Il-young knows he’s messed up, but it takes Ji-hwan’s reminder of his own advice, just be honest, for him to finally see the light. He’s ready to apologize to Mi-ho and confess his feelings, but just as he's about to make things right, Mi-ho hears from Marketing Deerling that Il-young allegedly has zero interest in ever being a family man. Nothing says “potential baby daddy drama” like that revelation. (And yes, “potential” is the key word here, as Mi-ho hasn’t yet confirmed her pregnancy with a second test or a doctor, so she’s navigating her decisions in a haze of uncertainty.)

In the wake of this bombshell, Mi-ho flatly rejects Il-young’s attempt to rekindle their romance, and that’s when things spiral out of control. Il-young drowns his sorrows in alcohol, then shows up on Mi-ho’s doorstep in a drunken haze, crashing at her place for the night. As he teeters on the brink of sleep, his heartfelt, slurred confessions almost win Mi-ho over. But just when it seems like he might turn the tide, his clumsy attempt to charm her…by, of all things, aggressively wooing her parents…sabotages any progress he might have made.

Il-young’s relentless pursuit has reached peak excess: showing up with lavish gifts, including a car, and invading Mi-ho’s family space. His grand gestures, meant to win her over, only deepen her discomfort, especially when she’s still uncertain about how he’ll handle her potential pregnancy. Despite Il-young's insistence that he’ll keep trying until she accepts him, his approach comes off as overbearing rather than charming. While the drama tries to paint Il-young’s behavior as a thawing of his anti-family stance and a catalyst for rapid romance, it’s falling flat for me. The emotional connection feels forced, and the pregnancy subplot isn’t hitting the mark as intended.

Il-young’s fascination with Mi-ho’s family and his intense scrutiny of her childhood photos make it seem like he’s not just courting Mi-ho but desperately trying to integrate himself into a ready-made family. His fixation on what their potential child might look like in the future paints this so-called romance as a lonely man’s quest to fill a gaping void left by his own absent family. It’s almost as if he’s more interested in the idea of family than in Mi-ho herself. Caught in the crossfire, Mi-ho is left feeling like an afterthought, unfairly led to believe that Il-young’s renewed pursuit is driven by genuine affection for her, rather than his own unmet needs and desires.

Meanwhile, Ji-hwan faces a new, more dangerous challenge than Hyun-woo: Yang-hee. With Ji-hwan’s father out of prison and reclaiming his former power, Yang-hee has been demoted and is seething with anger. Blaming Ji-hwan for his fall from grace instead of his own criminal choices, Yang-hee is plotting revenge. Unable to match Ji-hwan in strength or strategy, Yang-hee resorts to targeting Ji-hwan's greatest vulnerability: Eun-ha. As tension mounts, it’s clear that Yang-hee’s vendetta will test Ji-hwan’s resolve like never before.

Yang-hee’s attack on Eun-ha comes while she’s working her part-time job, but it’s Ji-hwan who erupts into the scene with a ferocious intensity that leaves Eun-ha shaken. To her, it feels like Ji-hwan’s aggression is over the top—almost as if he’s savagely confronting a man just for handing her balloons. As tension skyrockets, Ji-hwan demands that Eun-ha quit her job, claiming it’s too dangerous. Eun-ha’s response is a fiery challenge: if Ji-hwan wants to control her life and shield her from harm, he’d better explain the real threat she’s facing.

Once more, Eun-ha is giving Ji-hwan the cold shoulder, setting the stage for the deerlings to swoop in with their signature shaved ice and irresistible charm. Their hilarious commentary and priceless reactions add a delightful twist to the drama. Luckily, this spat doesn’t derail Ji-hwan and Eun-ha’s romance. Ji-hwan steps up, offering a heartfelt apology alongside a symbolic apple and a candid explanation about Yang-hee's threat. With the air cleared, our emperor and empress penguins are back in their blissful bubble, proving that even icy moments can melt away with a bit of honesty and sweet gestures.

With the house all to themselves, you'd expect Ji-hwan’s confidence, bolstered by his impressive forearm display in the kitchen, to extend into their more intimate moments. But, oh, how wrong you’d be! Ji-hwan remains as adorably awkward as ever when it comes to physical closeness. Meanwhile, Eun-ha, playing the coy seductress with her playful videos and teasing banter, can’t help but be flustered by their seclusion. The charged atmosphere only heightens their mutual nervousness, turning their private moments into a delightful dance of awkwardness and yearning.

When Ji-hwan, our charming hero, now back in full manly mode, dedicates his basement to building a personal filming studio just for Eun-ha, it's impossible not to feel a flutter of excitement at every accidental touch. And when a steamy kiss scene flickers on the TV, it’s only natural that Ji-hwan and Eun-ha would be drawn irresistibly closer. But just as they lean in, their moment of passion is shattered by none other than Il-young’s unexpected arrival. Still, Ji-hwan's refusal to bolt in panic this time around is a small victory worth celebrating!

In a bold move, Ji-hwan takes the stage and delivers a decisive blow to Ye-na’s lingering hopes, declaring with unwavering confidence that Eun-ha is his one and only…well before Ye-na ever crossed paths with him. *Mic drop* But the real twist? This confrontation sparks a revelation for Ji-hwan. He recognizes that if he’s to truly build a future with Eun-ha, he must start revealing the gritty, unvarnished truths of his life. Ji-hwan’s decision to shield Eun-ha from his past has only erected a barrier between them, one that breeds miscommunication and deepens their misunderstandings. With this newfound clarity, he takes a pivotal step, joining Eun-ha and the deerlings at the orphanage where they’re volunteering. For the first time, amidst the bustling energy of the children and the warmth of shared purpose, Ji-hwan tears down his walls and opens up about the painful truths of his father.

The night Ji-hwan risked everything to protect young Eun-ha, one of his father’s henchmen abducted him, driven by Gangster Dad’s desire to see his estranged son. Though Ji-hwan wasn’t forced into his father's world immediately, the shadow of that fateful night loomed large. Years later, desperate to save his dying mother, Ji-hwan struck a grim bargain: his freedom in exchange for the money he needed. When his mother passed, Ji-hwan had no choice but to honor the deal and move in with his father, a decision driven more by necessity than desire.

Though Ji-hwan skims over the darker chapters of his life spent with his father's gang, he admits that those choices were his own. Seeing the weight of his shame, Eun-ha reassures him, acknowledging his past but emphasizing his transformation. She highlights the countless ways he’s shown his true colors: compassionate, caring, and dedicated to those around him. As long as he continues striving for a better self, she’s determined to stand by his side and support his journey.

While I’m cheering on the baby steps Ji-hwan is taking towards deepening his relationship with Eun-ha, a dark cloud looms on the horizon. Gangster Dad, ever the shadowy puppet master, has been watching Ji-hwan from afar and doesn’t like what he sees, a son who’s smiling and thriving despite his criminal past. With his formidable influence, having orchestrated Hyun-woo’s removal from the Kitty Gang’s drug investigation, there’s no telling what devious schemes he might use to drag Ji-hwan back into his criminal empire. In comparison, Yang-hee is looking more like a mere kitten next to this looming threat.

DramaZen's Opinion

Opinion of My Sweet Mobster (2024)

While these episodes might not be the pinnacle of the drama, the delightful interludes with the deerlings provided a welcome distraction from the less satisfying moments. I’m willing to overlook the stumbles as the series gears up for its final, dramatic arc…sometimes, a few bumps along the way are just part of the ride!

We’re diving into the epic final act, where alliances are forming and our characters are gearing up for their ultimate showdown. Even Ji-hwan and Hyun-woo are set to forge an unexpected bromance, united by their mutual goal of protecting their beloved Eun-ha and locking up the villains. It’s all coming together for a thrilling climax!

Alright, it might be a bit of a stretch just yet, but watching Hyun-woo interact with the deerlings this week sparked a glimmer of hope. Could we be witnessing the start of a potential adoption into the crew? Fingers crossed for a surprising new dynamic!
