The final episodes of Who Is She attempt to wrap up the whirlwind journey of Mal-soon (as Doo-ri) with emotional reunions, shocking reveals, and a bittersweet farewell. While some threads tie up nicely, the show’s last-minute twists and uneven pacing leave a lot to unpack—both good and bad. Let’s dive into the finale.

We pick up with Daniel and Doo-ri on their strange road trip, where they’re “coincidentally” being followed by Daniel’s stalker. The twist? It’s all part of Daniel’s plan to bait the stalker into exposing herself. The group’s entire beach trip, including other trainees and staff, becomes evidence that the stalker’s photos were taken out of context. At a press conference, Daniel clears his name and reveals that the stalker was never his girlfriend. With that, the stalker plotline is wrapped up neatly—perhaps too neatly.

But Daniel’s story isn’t done. In a surprising reveal, we learn that Ae-shim, who Daniel has referred to as his “aunt” throughout the series, is actually his biological mother. She gave him up for adoption to her sister when her fame—and the baby’s father—made keeping him impossible. This parallels Mal-soon’s sacrifices for Ji-sook, creating an emotional counterweight that humanizes Ae-shim. Daniel forgives her and moves on, but the reveal feels rushed and doesn’t have the impact it could have.

Meanwhile, the love triangle between Doo-ri, Daniel, and Jun comes to an emotional head. Daniel and Doo-ri share a surprisingly passionate kiss during their “setup” trip, signaling that her feelings for him are real. Jun, ever the loyal friend, steps aside gracefully, encouraging Doo-ri to follow her heart. While his quiet heartbreak is touching, it’s hard not to feel for him—after all, even with a second chance, Mal-soon didn’t choose him.

The romance takes a strange turn when we learn that “Emily,” the missing idol, was actually Kkeut-soon during her young-again stint. That means Daniel’s previous romantic feelings for Emily were tied to Kkeut-soon, making his new relationship with Doo-ri (Mal-soon) a bit…awkward. The show glosses over this, leaving viewers to connect the dots and suspend disbelief.

The heart of the finale centers on Mal-soon’s choice: remain in her young body for six more months and then die, or return to her old self and resume her life. The stakes are raised when Doo-ri collapses during a dress rehearsal, signaling that her time is running out. The magical cab driver returns, giving her three days to make her decision.

Doo-ri’s internal conflict reflects the show’s broader theme: balancing personal dreams with family responsibilities. Her meeting with Ji-sook, now aware of Doo-ri’s true identity, is a tearful turning point. Ji-sook encourages her mother to live the life she always wanted, even if it means staying young and not returning to the family. It’s a bittersweet moment of closure between mother and daughter, showing how far they’ve come.

As Doo-ri contemplates her decision, she makes amends with Ae-shim, forgiving her for the decades-long grudge over the stolen debut song. In a touching scene, she acknowledges that Ae-shim’s voice and performance made the song famous, letting go of her resentment after fifty years.

On the day of the idol group’s debut showcase, Doo-ri makes her choice: she stays in her young body, determined to enjoy her remaining time. The group takes the stage in a triumphant moment, but as the lights fade, so does Doo-ri. Her disappearance is quiet and poetic, leaving her friends and family to move forward without her.

The epilogue ties up loose ends for the remaining characters. Ji-sook leaves her corporate job to pursue her dream of becoming an architect, while Jun returns to his older self and finds peace with his memories of Mal-soon. Daniel starts his own entertainment label, moving forward with his career. Kkeut-soon sticks around to fill in for Mal-soon in the family, and Ha-na continues her idol journey.

In a strange final scene, Daniel is served coffee by a Doo-ri/Emily doppelgänger, hinting at reincarnation or a new beginning. The ambiguous ending leaves more questions than answers, shifting the focus from dreams to relationships in a way that feels inconsistent with the show’s original themes.

DramaZen's Opinion

Opinion of Who Is She (2024)

Episodes 11 and 12 deliver emotional highs but struggle with narrative cohesion. The heartfelt family moments—especially between Ji-sook and Mal-soon—are beautifully done, giving the series a much-needed emotional payoff. However, the rushed reveals, convoluted connections, and muddled messaging about dreams and youth dilute the impact of the finale.

While the focus on relationships takes center stage, it’s disappointing that Mal-soon’s dream of becoming a singer gets sidelined. After twelve episodes of build-up, the actual performances feel like an afterthought, leaving viewers longing for more musical moments.

The ending is bittersweet, offering closure for most characters while leaving a lingering sense of missed potential. Who Is She had all the ingredients for a compelling story, but its finale feels like a tribute to youth rather than a celebration of a life well-lived. Still, the emotional depth and strong performances make it a journey worth watching, even if the final act doesn’t hit all the right notes.
