Newtopia- Episodes 3-4
Love, Survival, and the Fear of the Unknown
If there’s one thing Episode 3 of Newtopia proves, it’s that love and human connection can thrive even in the darkest of times. This episode delivers a gripping mix of unexpected alliances, unshakable devotion, and the ever-looming concept of the other—a theme that hits hard as our characters navigate both physical and emotional battles in the midst of a zombie apocalypse.
An Unlikely Alliance Forms
Kang Young Soo (Jisoo) and her senior, Seo Jin Wook (Kang Young Seok), find themselves in an unexpected partnership with Alex (Lee Hak Joo). Despite their differences, the trio decides to stick together as chaos erupts around them. The way their trust in one another grows—born out of sheer necessity—adds an exciting dynamic to the survival story.
Love as a Driving Force
Kang Young Soo is the definition of a hopeless romantic, and this episode makes that abundantly clear. From a nostalgic cassette playing her and Lee Jae Yun’s (Park Jung Min) favorite songs to even something as small as her untied shoelaces, everything reminds her of him. But her love isn’t just a sentimental longing—it fuels her determination to survive. In a world overrun by the undead, her heart beats strongest for one thing: reuniting with Lee Jae Yun.
Meanwhile, Private Lee Jae Yun is in full survival mode. After narrowly escaping a zombie horde with Private Ra In Ho (Im Sung Jae) and hotelier O Su Jeong (Hong Seo Hee), he finally makes it to the rooftop base. But instead of finding refuge, they’re met with suspicion.
The Fear of the Unknown
A powerful theme in this episode is the fear of the other. When Lee Jae Yun, Ra In Ho, and O Su Jeong reach the rooftop, the soldiers stationed there view them as a threat. The military, still unaware of the full extent of the outbreak, treats the survivors with distrust, highlighting how fear and paranoia can turn people against one another—even when they should be working together.
A Romance in the Making?
Amidst all the tension, sparks begin to fly between O Su Jeong and Corporal Kwak Gye Yeong (Bin Chan Uk). Though subtle, their interactions hint at a budding romance—one that might just provide a glimmer of hope in this grim reality. Whether they’ll grow closer or be torn apart by the unfolding disaster remains to be seen.
Love, Survival, and a Shocking Discovery
Episode 4 of Newtopia took us on a rollercoaster of emotions, blending nostalgia, desperation, and a game-changing twist that could shift the entire survival strategy. From heart-fluttering flashbacks of Kang Young Soo (Jisoo) and Lee Jae Yun’s (Park Jung Min) love story to a mind-blowing revelation about a zombie shield, this episode had everything!
A Love Story with a Twist
Through a series of flashbacks, we finally got a peek into Kang Young Soo and Lee Jae Yun’s college days. And guess what? It was she who pursued him! Unlike the usual romance tropes, where the guy chases after the girl, Young Soo was relentless in her pursuit—even after being rejected multiple times. But persistence paid off, and Lee Jae Yun, once hesitant, transformed into the most caring boyfriend. Just as we were getting lost in the sweetness of their past, reality hit hard—Young Soo found herself trapped in a dark alley, surrounded by zombies.
The Unexpected Game Changer: The Zombie Shield
Just when it seemed all hope was lost, Newtopia dropped a major twist. Kang Young Soo, Seo Jin Wook (Kang Young Seok), and Alex (Lee Hak Joo) stumbled upon Sam Su (Tang Jun Sang), a man bitten by a zombie—yet mysteriously immune. Even more bizarre? The zombies completely ignored him. Realizing they could use this to their advantage, the trio took Sam Su with them, using him as a walking decoy to slip past the undead unnoticed. Their goal? Reach Tower A, and fast.
A Desperate Escape Plan
Meanwhile, back at the barracks, Lee Jae Yun and Ra In Ho (Im Sung Jae) decided they couldn’t just sit and wait for salvation—they needed to reunite with their loved ones. But leaving the base wasn’t going to be easy.
Before they could make a move, Jae Yun stumbled upon their First Sergeant, on the brink of suicide after losing three of his men. In a rare moment of vulnerability, the Sergeant’s grief took center stage—until Jae Yun and In Ho’s sudden arrival snapped him out of it. Their presence gave him a reason to pause, and maybe even to hope.
Hope Arrives—Or Does It?
Jae Yun and In Ho argued that the base was running out of food and water, urging the Sergeant to let them leave. Just as their words started to sink in, the phone rang. On the other end? The battalion commander, delivering unexpected news—supply choppers were en route with food and water.
For most of the troops, this was a sign of relief. But for Jae Yun? Disappointment was written all over his face. Staying at the base now felt like a trap, delaying his true mission—getting back to Young Soo.
As the final moments of the episode played out, a helicopter loomed in the distance, making its way toward the base. The soldiers prepared for its landing, but one lingering question remained in their minds: Is this a sign of salvation, or just another delay in an endless nightmare?
DramaZen's Opinion
A Perfect Blend of Heart and Horror
Episodes 3 and 4 of Newtopia delivered everything I love about this drama—intense survival, gripping emotional depth, and twists that leave you on the edge of your seat.
Episode 3 set the stage beautifully, diving into the theme of trust and the fear of the other. Seeing Kang Young Soo, Seo Jin Wook, and Alex form an unlikely bond was a great shift, proving that in a world overrun by zombies, sometimes your worst enemy can become your strongest ally. The highlight, though, was Young Soo’s unwavering love for Lee Jae Yun—it’s rare to see romance written so well into a horror setting, but Newtopia nails it. And let’s not forget the brewing chemistry between O Su Jeong and Corporal Kwak Gye Yeong—definitely a slow burn worth watching!
Episode 4 took things up a notch with a jaw-dropping revelation—the zombie shield. The introduction of Sam Su, who was bitten but never turned, added a whole new layer to the story. The group using him as a decoy to move past zombies? Brilliant. Meanwhile, Lee Jae Yun and Ra In Ho’s decision to escape the barracks only to get hit with the news of incoming supplies was such a frustrating yet realistic moment. The final shot of the helicopter approaching? Chills.
Overall, these episodes had a perfect balance of suspense, character development, and unexpected twists. Newtopia keeps proving why it’s not just another zombie drama—it’s a masterclass in storytelling. Can’t wait for the next episode! 🚁🧟♂️💔
