Episode 5 of No Gain No Love kicks off with a mysterious man in a black suit approaching Ji-uk, threatening to expose him to his biological mother's family in Canada unless he joins Kkulbee Education as a new recruit. Forced into a corner, Ji-uk reluctantly agrees.

The next morning, Hae-yeong is stunned to see Ji-uk among the new recruits at work. After giving a terse welcome speech to the new employees, Ji-uk pulls Hae-yeong aside, explaining that he’s being blackmailed but can’t share the full story. Instead of questioning his presence, Hae-yeong demands to know why he ghosted her, ignoring her calls. Ji-uk admits he didn’t want to lie about where he was. She then warns him to keep their marriage a secret, insisting no one find out he’s her "husband."

Meanwhile, Ja-yeon is having lunch with Ha-jun, unaware that Gyu-hyun, suspicious and knowing her true identity, is spying on them. Gyu-hyun calls Ha-jun, fishing for information about his relationship with Ja-yeon.

Later, the new employees participate in an education fair where customers evaluate them. Hae-yeong, trying to help Ji-uk avoid being sent to another company outpost, gives him a bee costume and tells him to entertain the children. However, her plan backfires when Ji-uk removes the costume to grab a drink, revealing his handsome, sweat-soaked face. The sight of him instantly charms all the mothers, leading to glowing evaluations.

Amidst the chaos, Hae-yeong notices a child covered in bruises and realizes he’s being abused. She discreetly takes photos, but the boy’s father catches her and tries to snatch her phone. Ji-uk rushes over to defend her, leading to a scuffle that lands them all at the police station. Kkulbee's company lawyer, Kang Bit-na, shows up to assist, though she’s vague about how she knew they were there. Hae-yeong convinces her to help sue the father for abuse, but later, Bit-na’s private phone call reveals her real purpose was protecting Ji-uk, not Hae-yeong.

That night, Hae-yeong and Ji-uk tend to their wounds at a bus stop. Hae-yeong shares that growing up with foster kids taught her to spot signs of abuse. As she leaves, the mysterious man reappears, whisking Ji-uk away to a luxurious penthouse and handing him a credit card and car keys. Suspicious, Ji-uk asks if the man is his real father, but the man humorously reveals he’s been infertile for years.

Meanwhile, Yun Tae-hyung confesses to Hui-seong that he’s ready to get married. Hae-yeong returns home and tells her sisters about Ji-uk’s reappearance. Hui-seong, who never liked the idea of the marriage, declares she knew it would end badly. Later, the two sisters sit on the roof, where Hui-seong admits she doesn’t feel ready to marry Tae-hyung. She also presents Hae-yeong with a large wedding portrait of her and Ji-uk, a gift from Tae-hyung, which Hae-yeong angrily stashes in the attic. Among the stored items, we catch a glimpse of an old photograph of Hae-yeong’s mother and Ji-uk together.

At the Bok household, tensions rise as Bok Gi-ho orders Gyu-hyun to sign a contract stating he’ll lose his position if he damages the company’s reputation. Jeong-a, Gyu-hyun’s mother, retorts that Gi-ho should sign a waiver agreeing to the same.

At work, Hae-yeong meets her new team members, including Ji-uk and Park Gi-won. Her team convinces her to join them for dinner, while Ja-yeon runs into Gyu-hyun at the police station. Furious, she throws his apology letter in his face, accusing him of sending her death threats. As she storms off, Gyu-hyun is nearly hit by a truck while retrieving the scattered papers, causing Ja-yeon to faint in shock. He rushes her to the hospital.

During the team dinner, Hae-yeong drinks heavily, still upset over Ji-uk’s presence at work. She warns him that if anyone discovers his identity, she’ll be reduced from team leader to merely "someone’s wife," shouldering the blame for all his mistakes. On the way home, Ji-uk attempts to tell her that he was genuinely happy to see her again, but Hae-yeong has already fallen asleep. When they arrive, they find Woo-jae passed out drunk outside her front door. Ji-uk wants to call Yi-lin, but Hae-yeong refuses. Frustrated, Ji-uk asks if she’s still not over Woo-jae. She responds that her feelings are her own problem, prompting Ji-uk to walk away. However, when she struggles to lift Woo-jae, Ji-uk silently returns to help.

The next morning, Hae-yeong arrives at work and is immediately called away by a stern-looking Yi-lin. In the office, Gi-won informs Ji-uk that he reported Hae-yeong for workplace harassment after overhearing their conversation about her being blamed for his mistakes. He assumed she was bullying him.

Racing against the clock, Ji-uk bursts into the room where Hae-yeong is being questioned and, just as she’s about to lose her rank, he makes a bold declaration: "I’m not a victim. I’m Hae-yeong’s husband." And with that, No Gain No Love Episode 5 comes to an explosive close.

DramaZen's Opinion

Opinion of No Gain, No Love (2024)

This episode was a delightful, rompy ride, packed with plenty to enjoy across the show’s many storylines. Hae-yeong and Ji-uk's reunion brings a deliciously dynamic mix of irritation, familiarity, and an undeniable undercurrent of attraction that keeps things fun and engaging.

On the other side, Ja-yeon and Gyu-hyun’s plotline moves at a slower pace, but Ja-yeon’s charm keeps the intrigue alive. Meanwhile, Gyu-hyun’s parents continue their power struggle, and Hui-seong introduces a new layer to her relationship by admitting she doesn’t want to marry her boyfriend.

So far, the drama has done a great job balancing its various characters and storylines, weaving them together in a way that feels seamless. The tone is perfectly balanced too, blending romance, humor, and real-world issues like gender stereotypes and online bullying. It has just the right touch of that over-the-top K-drama flair, making it a well-rounded and highly entertaining package that keeps viewers hooked.

Hae-yeong’s sense of defiance and independence shines through, while the plot masterfully sets up a scenario where Ji-uk has no choice but to reveal himself as her husband. This moment was executed flawlessly. While it’s becoming clear that Ji-uk has ties to the chaebol family—likely as the CEO’s illegitimate son—I’m hoping the drama continues to focus on the heart of the story: his evolving relationship with Hae-yeong, which is where the show truly excels.
