Episode 5 Recap: The Birthday That Changed Everything

Episode 5 of Would You Marry Me picks up with Woo-joo grinning to himself as he calls Me-ri, he’s found her wallet. Simple enough, right? But at the same time, the other Woo-ju lands in Seoul and tries calling Me-ri too. She answers, thinking it’s her new “husband,” only to realize it’s her cheating ex. She hangs up fast and blocks him, though somehow he still convinces himself she’s playing hard to get. Classic.

Our Woo-joo and Me-ri agree to meet the next day, and the easy banter between them already feels more natural. Meanwhile, Woo-joo’s grandmother Pil-nyeon keeps pushing the idea of marriage, hoping to ease the tension in their family and redeem her late husband’s legacy.

The next day, Me-ri bumps into Sang-hyun on her way to work. She quickly lies that her “husband” was working late last night, gotta keep that act up! Sang-hyun offers her a ride, but she politely refuses. Later, Woo-joo finds himself hiding in the bathroom after learning Sang-hyun’s in the building, pretending to be sick so their cover isn’t blown. Of course, fate has other plans, he literally runs into Sang-hyun and Han-gu, forcing them into an awkward introduction where everyone pretends they’ve never met before. The elevator scene between Woo-joo and Sang-hyun is a quiet highlight, full of tension and humor as they both try to piece things together without revealing too much.

After a close call, Me-ri and Woo-joo agree they need to talk on the phone at least four times a day to keep their stories straight. Woo-joo claims it’s for “practice,” but it’s obvious he just wants an excuse to talk to her more.

Elsewhere, Me-ri’s ex, Woo-ju, is under pressure from his mom and sister to introduce them to Jenny, the woman he cheated with. His sister even wants to use Jenny’s money to fund her business, which pushes Woo-ju over the edge. Frustrated and regretful, he starts thinking about Me-ri again, missing what he threw away.

Meanwhile, Me-ri grabs lunch with Gyeong-hwa, and Woo-joo randomly joins them. When they start chatting about first loves, Me-ri admits hers was handsome with a small, pretty head, without realizing she’s describing the man sitting right in front of her. Woo-joo’s face lights up when he realizes he’s her first love. It’s such a sweet, quiet moment.

Elsewhere in the hospital, Dr. Jin-gyeong is done putting up with Sung-woo’s arrogance and tells him she’s discharging him soon. That night, she nervously gets ready for a date with Woo-joo, hoping to finally confess her feelings. But things don’t go as planned, Woo-joo brings up his past, revealing that Me-ri was his first love and that he’s felt guilty about her father’s death for years. Jin-gyeong, clearly heartbroken, tells him to keep that truth to himself.

The next day brings a somber note, it’s Woo-joo’s parents’ death anniversary, which also happens to be his birthday. While his family blames him for the accident, we finally learn the real culprit: Han-gu, who hired a driver to cause the crash. The guilt still eats away at Woo-joo, and he nearly has a panic attack when he returns home. But just as things spiral, Me-ri texts him about the cactus she got from her friend, it bloomed. Her simple message pulls him back from his dark thoughts.

Realizing it’s his birthday, Me-ri invites him over for a home-cooked meal. Despite her worries that it might seem too forward, Woo-joo accepts. The dinner is heartwarming, Me-ri’s cooking may be salty, but her effort moves him. When he admits no one has celebrated his birthday since his parents died, Me-ri’s compassion shines through.

Then, as rain clears and a double rainbow appears, Me-ri drags Woo-joo outside to make wishes. Their laughter feels easy and real, and for the first time, they seem like a true couple. She trips and lands on his chest, and just as their faces draw closer, there’s Woo-ju, the ex, standing at the gate, watching everything unfold.

Episode 6 Recap: Jealousy, Chaos, and One Very Annoying Ex

Episode 6 of Would You Marry Me starts with a surprisingly funny twist, Woo-ju’s mom is frantically searching for her cat, Elizabeth. Turns out, the cat actually belongs to Jenny, and Woo-ju was just supposed to drop it off at her aunt’s house in Beaute Palace. That’s how he accidentally ends up catching sight of Me-ri and Woo-joo almost kissing! Me-ri panics and hides while Woo-ju keeps ringing the doorbell like an uninvited ghost from the past. Thankfully, they ignore him long enough for him to leave.

Later, Me-ri confides in Woo-joo about how anxious she feels now that her ex is back. Woo-joo, ever the calm one, tells her not to overthink things and maybe just talk it out with her ex, an idea Me-ri shuts down immediately. She’d rather get caught in a lie than face Woo-ju again. Honestly, can anyone blame her?

Meanwhile, at the running club, Jin-gyeong crosses paths with Sang-hyun again. What starts as a normal jog turns into chaos when someone collapses mid-run. Jin-gyeong rushes to help, performing CPR, but a creep starts filming her. Sang-hyun steps in like a hero, deletes the video, and confronts the guy. The chemistry between these two keeps quietly building, and I’m here for it.

Back at work, Me-ri comes up with a beautiful new design for Beaute Palace’s collaboration with Myunsoondang, even incorporating poems from a famous monk. Woo-joo is clearly impressed and praises her creativity, which makes the scene feel warm and validating, until everything goes sideways.

On her way out, Me-ri runs into Woo-ju, who suddenly decides he wants her back. After years of cheating and disappearing, he’s acting like he’s had an epiphany and “realized she’s the one.” He lies that he broke up with Jenny, expecting Me-ri to melt, but she stands her ground. His shock at her rejection is both infuriating and satisfying.

The next day, disaster strikes at work, the monk whose poems they used in the packaging is caught in a scandal, forcing Beaute to recall all the gift boxes. Woo-joo and Me-ri team up with the marketing crew to track down the missing deliveries, which leads to some fun banter, near-misses, and even a scene where Me-ri saves Woo-joo from a dog attack. The tension between them keeps growing in the best way.

As if that weren’t enough, Woo-ju’s family drama continues. His sister and mom are packing for Japan, and she tells him to stop calling Me-ri, even revealing that their mom insulted Me-ri’s family during a visit. Furious, Woo-ju storms off to find Me-ri, convinced he can somehow fix everything.

Back at the office, Woo-joo tells Me-ri he’s changed his mind, he no longer thinks Woo-ju deserves anything and promises to help her until the end. The gesture moves her, and she gives him a heartfelt hug. Of course, the timing couldn’t be worse because Woo-ju shows up right after and starts following them.

At Beaute Palace, Woo-joo helps Me-ri hang up a bath curtain and accidentally drenches himself. The domestic awkwardness that follows is adorable, they end up laughing as Me-ri dries his hair, and you can just feel how close they’re getting. But outside, Woo-ju is watching every moment unfold, seething with jealousy.

When Me-ri takes out the trash, Woo-ju confronts her. She tries to play it off, claiming she’s just house-sitting, but he barges in, accusing her of cheating and demanding to see her “rich new man.” Desperate to hide the wedding photo, she turns off the lights, and in the scuffle, he slips and injures his arm.

At the hospital, Woo-ju milks his minor injury for all it’s worth, making Me-ri stay overnight to “watch” him since his family’s unavailable. He even has the nerve to tell her he’ll forgive her “little fling” with Woo-joo. The audacity is unreal, he’s quickly earning the title of most irritating ex in K-drama history.

Meanwhile, the corporate tension heats up. Pil-nyeon asks Han-gu to help Woo-joo with company affairs, but things take a dark turn when Han-gu crosses paths with the widow of Mr. Ko. She’s found incriminating documents linking Han-gu to shady financial dealings, the same ones that got her husband killed. And if that’s not enough, Han-gu’s secret American wife enters the picture. Turns out he’s not just corrupt, he’s also a cheater.

Back in the present, Me-ri ends up missing her lunch date with Woo-joo thanks to her clingy ex. He’s clearly disappointed when she cancels, unaware of the chaos she’s stuck in. Elsewhere, Jin-gyeong tries to thank Sang-hyun with a small gift and an offer to buy him a drink, but he brushes her off coldly, leaving her embarrassed.

Trying to shake it off, Jin-gyeong calls Woo-joo and invites him to lunch. He agrees, but when he arrives at the hospital, the sight that greets him makes his blood boil. Me-ri is helping Woo-ju back to his room, and Woo-joo’s jealousy finally hits a breaking point. He scolds Me-ri, practically drags Woo-ju back to bed, and then bluntly admits why he’s so upset: he likes her and can’t stand seeing her with anyone else.

Me-ri is left speechless, and honestly, so are we. The tension, the confession, the chaos... it’s all building up beautifully.

DramaZen's Opinion

Opinion of Would You Marry Me (2025)

Episodes 5 and 6 of Would You Marry Me were such a rollercoaster. Just when I thought things were finally calming down between Me-ri and Woo-joo, her ex shows up like a walking red flag determined to ruin everything. The tension between Me-ri and Woo-joo is getting stronger by the episode, you can feel that unspoken pull every time they’re in the same room.

I also really liked seeing Jin-gyeong and Sang-hyun’s little storyline developing on the side; it adds a nice balance to all the drama. Episode 6, though, had me yelling at the screen, Woo-joo’s ex is truly testing everyone’s patience. But that last scene? You can’t tell me Woo-joo doesn’t have real feelings for Me-ri now. Things are getting complicated, and I’m absolutely hooked. 🥰
