Guardians of the Dafeng- Episodes 5-6
Episode 5: A Mysterious Sword and Seeking Shelter for Family
Fresh off his success at the Directorate of Celestial Monitoring, Xu Qi’an receives a precious sword as a gift—but things take a surprising turn when the weapon seemingly has a mind of its own. After muttering some complaints about his teacher, the sword aggressively lunges at him, forcing him into a panic-filled apology. This comedic yet thrilling moment sets the tone for an episode filled with Xu Qi’an’s signature wit and bad luck.
Meanwhile, Xu Qi’an and Xu Xinnian head to Yunlu Academy, hoping to enroll their younger sisters to keep them safe from the looming threat of Zhou Xianping. In true Guardians fashion, the academy's scholars, Zhang Shen and Li Mubai, agree to help—but only if Xu Qi’an contributes twenty poems to their collection, “On the Pursuit of Learning.” Our favorite constable struggles to come up with complete verses but manages to charm his way through with half-finished lines and promises of better work in the future. Classic Xu Qi’an!
On their way home, the duo realizes they are being followed, prompting Uncle Xu Pingzhi to reinforce their home’s defenses. Xu Qi’an, ever the strategist, begins looking into Zhou Li’s habits and finds a lead—Fu Xiang, a famous courtesan who might hold key information.
Xu Qi’an gears up for his next mission: infiltrating the Imperial Entertainment Bureau to get close to Fu Xiang. But, with his pockets nearly empty, he resorts to a game of pitch-pot to win enough silver for the pricey entrance fee. Just when he thinks he's in the clear, he bumps into his uncle and cousin at the brothel, making for one of the most hilarious moments of the episode.
Episode 6: Poetry, Schemes, and Sweet Revenge
The Xu family men—Xu Qi’an, Xu Xinnian, and Xu Pingzhi—unexpectedly run into each other at the Jiaofang Division, leading to an awkward but hilarious dinner table exchange. But the comedy quickly turns to strategy as Xu Qi’an impresses Fu Xiang with a beautifully recited poem, securing a meeting with her. Fu Xiang reveals a crucial tidbit: Zhou Li has been feuding with Zhang Yunyin, the illegitimate son of the Marquis of Weiwu.
Armed with this knowledge, Xu Qi’an hatches a brilliant plan. Using a magical jade mirror, he and his team stage a fake kidnapping to trick Zhang Yunyin into believing the Vice Minister of Revenue is out to get him. The plan works perfectly, as Zhang Yunyin rushes to his powerful father, setting off a chain reaction that leads to the Vice Minister’s downfall.
But Xu Qi’an doesn’t stop there—he takes things up a notch by leveraging his connections at the Directorate of Celestial Monitoring. Offering a highly sought-after alchemical formula, he convinces his senior brother to extract a confession from Zhou Li, leading to the complete dismantling of Zhou Xianping’s influence.
As the dust settles, Xu Qi’an realizes that it’s time to leave town to avoid further entanglements. Before departing, he makes a few last-minute stops—bidding farewell to his family and friends, and making one final financial play with a clever alchemical fundraising scheme. Just when we think it’s all wrapped up, Xu Qi’an encounters Princess Lin An, whose breathtaking beauty leaves a lasting impression on him.
DramaZen's Opinion
Hey Guardians of the Dafeng fans! If you thought the show couldn't get any better, episodes 5 and 6 delivered a delightful mix of strategy, humor, and tension that left me on the edge of my seat. Xu Qi’an continues to impress with his clever maneuvering, and we got some fantastic moments of both high-stakes intrigue and lighthearted fun.
These two episodes perfectly encapsulated what makes Guardians of the Dafeng such an incredible show—smart writing, brilliant character interactions, and a seamless blend of humor and political intrigue. Xu Qi’an’s evolution from an outsider to a formidable player in the game of power is incredibly satisfying to watch.
The comedic moments, particularly the brothel mix-up and the sword incident, provided great balance to the tense political drama. And with new threats on the horizon, I can’t wait to see how Xu Qi’an navigates the next phase of his journey.
Episodes 5 and 6 were an absolute delight! If you’re a fan of intrigue, humor, and character-driven storytelling, you’re in for a treat. Let me know what you thought of these episodes in the comments!
