Guardians of the Dafeng- Episodes 7-8
Episode 7: The Watchman Trials Begin!
The episode kicks off with a literal bang as Princess Lin An nearly causes an explosion at the Directorate of Celestial Monitoring while attempting to refine the infamous tax silver. Despite the near disaster, she is thrilled with her progress. However, her joy is short-lived when she returns to the palace to face Consort Chen’s disapproval. Bound by traditional beliefs, Consort Chen dismisses Lin An’s efforts, reinforcing the notion that women could never surpass the Crown Prince. This moment adds a poignant layer to Lin An’s character as she grapples with familial expectations.
Meanwhile, Xu Qi’an’s attempt to flee town is thwarted when two watchmen intercept him and escort him straight to Master Yang and Nangong Qianrou. It turns out they had been watching his every move and saw his potential. Offered the choice between the strict Yang Yan and the flamboyant Nangong Qianrou, Xu Qi’an chooses Yang Yan out of gratitude for a past favor.
What follows is an intense and humorous series of tests to determine his suitability as a watchman. Xu Qi’an’s quick wit shines through as he solves an intelligence test in just three breaths—shocking even the most seasoned watchmen. The highlight of this episode? Xu Qi’an’s near brush with death when he mistakenly skips the traditional bowing ritual, only to realize the dire consequences and hastily make amends. His knack for bluffing through tough situations continues to delight viewers.
After successfully passing the tests and earning a top grade, Xu Qi’an is officially inducted into the Nightwatchers. But his journey is just beginning!
Episode 8: Settling In and Facing New Challenges
Xu Qi’an’s first day as a watchman starts with a splash—literally! Jumping out of the Marrow-Cleansing Pool, he soaks Li Yuchun, his new mentor, and realizes he might not have made the best first impression. Despite his usual smooth-talking skills, it’s clear that gaining the respect of his peers will be an uphill battle.
Meanwhile, Lin An’s rivalry with her elder sister Huai Qing adds a touch of court intrigue. Feeling overshadowed once again after learning that Huai Qing’s recommended candidate outperformed hers, Lin An’s frustration is palpable. This sibling rivalry promises to be an interesting subplot moving forward.
As Xu Qi’an settles into his role, he faces the harsh reality of bureaucracy. Instead of high-stakes action, he’s locked in a room to review case files—reminiscent of his earlier days under house arrest. Just when he thinks things couldn't get worse, a massive pile of unsolved cases is delivered to his home, effectively turning his new role into a glorified clerk.
Elsewhere, Huai An’s determination to shine at a poetry gathering sees her seeking out talented poets. Unbeknownst to her, the poem that captivates the brothel patrons is one penned by none other than Xu Qi’an himself—further cementing his unintended influence on the city’s cultural scene.
The episode takes a darker turn with the emergence of a mysterious creature terrorizing Taikang County. Xu Qi’an is finally called into action, teaming up with Chu Caiwei to investigate. Their chemistry remains as entertaining as ever, and their carriage ride to the scene is filled with lighthearted banter. However, when Xu Qi’an hears a disembodied voice at the eerie site, it becomes clear that this mystery is far from ordinary.
DramaZen's Opinion
Hey Guardians of the Dafeng fans! If you thought the story couldn't get any better, episodes 7 and 8 proved that the show is only getting stronger. These episodes delivered a delightful mix of political maneuvering, personal growth, and Xu Qi’an’s signature humor that keeps us hooked.
These two episodes were a fantastic mix of humor, character development, and foreshadowing of greater things to come. Xu Qi’an’s journey from a reluctant constable to a rising star in the Nightwatchers continues to be an exciting ride. The show’s ability to balance political intrigue with laugh-out-loud moments is what makes it stand out.
Princess Lin An’s storyline adds an emotional depth that contrasts well with the comedic tone, and the growing complexity of court politics keeps the stakes high. Meanwhile, Xu Qi’an’s knack for getting himself into (and out of) trouble in the most entertaining ways remains a highlight.
With the looming mystery of Taikang County and Xu Qi’an’s new role as a watchman, I can’t wait to see what happens next. What do you think? Are you enjoying the mix of humor and suspense? Let me know in the comments below!
