Episode 9: A Deadly Beast and A Royal Encounter

Xu Qi'an and Chu Caiwei’s investigation of the mysterious underground kiln led to a shocking discovery—saltpeter, a key ingredient for explosives, and a terrifying demon beast known as the Mei Beast, one of the top ten combat-ranked creatures. With its impenetrable scales and ferocious attacks, things looked dire. Luckily, with the combined efforts of the Silver Gong watchmen, they managed to take it down… or so they thought. In a classic fake-out, the beast feigned death and fled, prompting a tense chase. Fortunately, the Mei Beast didn’t make it far before dropping dead from its injuries.

With their first mission a success, the team returned triumphant. Xu Qi'an’s quick thinking once again stood out when he urged Li Yuchun to advocate for the affected villagers, suggesting that the Emperor reduce harsh taxes instead of sealing off the area entirely. Wei Yuan was impressed by Xu Qi'an’s foresight, much to Li Yuchun’s dismay. In retaliation, he assigned the team to clean latrines—because nothing says gratitude like elbow-deep grunt work!

Of course, Xu Qi'an wouldn’t let hard labor get him down. To celebrate their teamwork, he invited his comrades to the Jiaofang Department for some well-earned relaxation. Xu Qi'an’s past poetic escapades at the establishment had gained him quite the reputation, and his presence drew a crowd. However, things took a turn when a maid from the Second Princess Huai An mistook his performance for a tribute to the wrong royal. Oops.

Episode 10: Palace Games and Poetic Mischief

Xu Qi'an’s confusion only deepened when he was summoned by the Second Princess, who mistakenly believed he was pledging loyalty to the Eldest Princess, Huai Qing. Eager to clarify, Xu Qi'an rejected Huai An’s advances and insisted he wanted to serve her sister instead. This set off a hilarious series of misunderstandings and light-hearted confrontations.

Huai An, frustrated by Xu Qi'an’s refusal, decided to put him to the test with some classic palace scare tactics. However, having faced all manner of horrors in the Nightwatchers, Xu Qi'an remained unfazed, further irritating the princess. Realizing she wasn’t going to scare him into submission, Huai An resorted to more subtle tactics and, amused by his antics, allowed him to leave.

However, Xu Qi'an, not one to back down easily, staged a small protest outside her residence, determined to meet the Eldest Princess. His persistence paid off when Huai An, amused by his antics, decided to impersonate her sister and granted him an audience. Xu Qi'an, oblivious to the deception, swore his loyalty to Huai An, believing he was aligning himself with Huai Qing!

Meanwhile, Li Yuchun, normally a stickler for discipline, surprisingly allowed Xu Qi'an a bit more freedom, fueling his suspicions that his newfound royal backing was already working its magic. Not one to waste an opportunity, Xu Qi'an pressed his advantage at the Nightwatcher headquarters, presenting insightful critiques and improvements that even Wei Yuan found impressive.

As if juggling his duties wasn't enough, Xu Qi'an found himself under pressure to help his cousin Xu Xinnian prepare for an exam, while his uncle, ever opportunistic, inquired about using his newfound connections for personal gain.

On the palace side, Huai An’s deception hit a snag when she realized that the real Eldest Princess might cross paths with Xu Qi'an at the Directorate of Celestial Monitoring. What could possibly go wrong?
