The Best Day of My Life- Episodes 7-8
Song Niannian paced anxiously in front of Shen Yi's coffee shop, grappling with the decision to go in and apologize. She hesitated, torn between thinking a special trip was unnecessary and the nagging fear that if something happened to Shen Yi, she’d be the first one the police would question. With a determined breath, she finally stepped inside. Shen Yi looked up, curiosity flickering in her eyes.
“What brings you here?” she asked, an eyebrow raised.
“I was looking for Xu Mu,” Song Niannian replied, her cheeks flushing as she awkwardly admitted, “but I ended up calling you instead.”
“Why call me if you were looking for him?” Shen Yi countered, her tone teasing.
Caught off guard, Song Niannian stammered, “I guess I’ll just leave since he’s not here.”
“Wait! Stay a little while,” Shen Yi urged, gesturing toward the counter. “I’ll get you a drink.”
Song Niannian shook her head, adamant. “I won’t tell you I’m here to apologize!”
Shen Yi chuckled, “Well, I was wrong too for how I acted.”
As the tension eased, Song Niannian admitted, “I shouldn’t have pushed my opinions on you either.” Just as Shen Yi began to share the burdens weighing on her, a sudden phone ring interrupted, sending both of them into a panic. Shen Yi’s father had arrived, and they quickly dimmed the lights, hiding together as he peered into the shop. Once he left, they let out a collective sigh of relief, and Shen Yi flicked the lights back on.
Song Niannian’s gaze landed on a pile of intricate design sketches scattered across the table. “What’s all this?” she asked, intrigued.
“It’s a secret project I’m working on,” Shen Yi revealed, a spark igniting in his eyes.
In that moment, Song Niannian realized that this was why he had been avoiding his father. Shen Yi eagerly showed her a half-finished prototype of a guide dog he had been tirelessly crafting. “Is this why you insisted on working here?” she questioned.
“I’ve wanted to pursue this since college, but my father secretly pushed me into finance,” he confessed, frustration creeping into his voice.
“Wow, that’s impressive!” she exclaimed, her admiration genuine. “An intelligent guide dog? That’s really cool!”
Meanwhile, Xie Shi returned home to find Xu Mu asleep on the couch, surrounded by a feast of delicious food he had prepared. His heart warmed as he picked up a note where she expressed her gratitude for helping her regain her job.
The next morning, he whisked up two breakfasts, urging Xu Mu to eat quickly and not worry about cleaning up. “Why were you out so late last night?” she asked sleepily, remembering the cake he had brought. “Did you try it?”
“No, I was too busy,” he replied, reaching for the cake in the fridge.
As they planned their day, Xu Mu mentioned she had often visited their high school but had never actually stepped inside. “Well, I have business there. Want to come along?” Xie Shi offered, excitement tinging his voice.
When they arrived at the campus, nostalgia washed over them. They reminisced about their high school days until Xu Mu ran into her former math teacher, Mr. Zhang.
“Are you two getting married?” he asked, a teasing grin spreading across his face. “I’ve been waiting for the banquet!”
Xu Mu’s cheeks flushed. “How did you know?”
“Your social media posts, of course!” he chuckled, shaking his head.
Back in their old classroom, Xu Mu was taken aback by how little had changed. “Sitting next to you was so stressful,” she admitted, recounting how classmates would swarm her desk with questions, all wanting to talk to Xie Shi.
“It’s good feng shui,” she joked, nudging him playfully.
After Xie Shi left, a new popular student, who bore a striking resemblance to him, took the seat next to her. “Is it a boy or a girl?” Xie Shi asked when she mentioned it. “A boy,” she replied, a smile creeping onto her face as she reminisced. “Without you around, I ended up in the last row.”
Later, while Xie Shi was away on a business trip, Xu Mu participated in a community cake-baking event. When two neighbors recognized her as Xie Shi’s girlfriend, they snapped a photo, sharing it in the neighborhood group chat with a note to look after her.
In episode 8, Xu Mu perused illustrations when Xie Shi walked in, surprised by her newfound interest. “I’m looking for inspiration for an upcoming company promotion,” she explained, enthusiasm bubbling in her voice. “We want to steer clear of celebrities and feature illustrators instead.”
Xie Shi beamed, “That sounds amazing!”
At a meeting, Xu Mu pitched her idea, and Team Leader Liao endorsed it, asking if she knew any illustrators who fit the bill. She mentioned Zhang Yao, an illustrator she admired.
However, Fang Jingjing interjected with a biting remark, insinuating Xu Mu didn’t know what she was doing. “I can reach out to Luo Xiaoxiao instead. She’s in our budget and has a similar style.”
Team Leader Liao approved her suggestion, sending Xu Mu and Fang Jingjing to contact Luo Xiaoxiao together.
After work, the skies opened up, and Xu Mu noticed someone without an umbrella holding a painting. She shared hers with them, dismissing their gratitude with a smile.
Later, Song Niannian proudly presented her revised script to the screenwriter, who was thrilled with her work. “Where did you find such inspiration?” he inquired.
“From a friend’s story,” she replied, glowing with confidence.
Encouraged, she later told Xu Mu how she had woven her experiences with Shen Yi into her script, receiving glowing feedback. But when Xu Mu checked in on the progress with Luo Xiaoxiao, disappointment clouded her face upon hearing he had canceled on them.
“What? When did this happen?” Xu Mu pressed, concern lacing her tone.
Zhao Yusi informed her that the news had just come in that morning.
As Xu Mu’s expression darkened, Fang Jingjing approached, quickly guessing what had transpired. Speculation buzzed in the air about possible sabotage. Just then, Team Leader Liao arrived and urged Xu Mu to find a backup illustrator or persuade Luo Xiaoxiao to reconsider.
Determined, Xu Mu burned the midnight oil, desperate to find a suitable replacement. Zhang Yao received her message and, recognizing her name, agreed to meet. Overjoyed, Xu Mu rushed to share the news with Xie Shi, throwing her arms around him in excitement.
“Is Zhang Yao a guy?” he asked, curiosity piqued.
“I’m not sure, but from what I’ve seen online, I think she’s a woman,” Xu Mu replied, her heart racing.
At their meeting, she was taken aback to discover that Zhang Yao was the very person she had lent her umbrella to the other day. “Surprise!” he laughed, pointing out the irony.
With an air of trust, Zhang Yao agreed to collaborate without needing to review the proposal, solidifying their partnership. Back at home, Xie Shi heard the doorbell ring, expecting Xu Mu, only to find Shen Yi standing there, much to his surprise.
At the office, Fang Jingjing couldn’t resist her jabs, asking if Xu Mu had found a new illustrator yet. “Absolutely! I’ve secured Zhang Yao!” Xu Mu declared, confidence radiating from her.
As Xu Mu and Zhang Yao’s meetings grew more frequent, Xie Shi couldn’t shake off the feeling of jealousy bubbling within him. Meanwhile, the connection between Shen Yi and Song Niannian continued to deepen, teasing the promise of more to come.
