Episode 13 Recap: Couple’s Meals, Nightmare Confessions, and Sleepwalking Shenanigans

This week’s episode of Smile Code was a rollercoaster of emotions, awkward encounters, and heartwarming moments. Gu Yi’s patience and determination to crack Liang Daiwen’s emotional shell brought us some major revelations—and a fair share of hilarity. Let’s break it all down!

Teaching Aids Gone, Awkward Silence Ensues

Gu Yi came home to find her carefully chosen teaching aids missing. Liang Daiwen, unfazed, revealed that Lao Shen thought her efforts had done more harm than good. Ouch. Though embarrassed, Gu Yi couldn’t help but stew on the sofa, deep in thought.

Seeing her mood, Liang asked what was wrong. Gu Yi apologized for not being more effective, but Liang admitted she had helped him in ways he couldn’t quite express. Encouraged, Gu Yi nudged Liang to practice opening up emotionally—baby steps, but progress nonetheless!

Nightmares and Hidden Pills

Liang had another haunting nightmare, reliving a traumatic childhood memory that left him visibly shaken. As he reached for medicine in his bedside drawer, he hesitated, battling his inner demons. Gu Yi, sensing something was off, rushed to check on him but accidentally bumped right into him at his door.

When Gu Yi noticed the pills, she tried to lighten the mood by asking why he was still overworking himself. Liang avoided the question but offered to help her with her design drafts. Their collaboration was surprisingly seamless, with Liang genuinely enjoying the process and Gu Yi realizing how supportive he could be.

Couple’s Meal Chaos

Things took a turn when Gu Yi learned that Mr. Zhang had been investigating her due to her closeness to Liang. To make matters worse, Gu Yi ended up at a restaurant where Liang had ordered a couple’s meal—a stark reminder of his past with another woman, Zhang Qingya. Gu Yi, fuming, expressed her frustration, and Liang admitted it was a mistake to bring her there.

In a touching moment, Gu Yi pretended to call “10-year-old Liang Daiwen” and told him to stop blaming himself for his mother’s mistakes. She urged him to stop punishing himself and embrace the love around him. Her words seemed to resonate, but they also triggered another nightmare for Liang later that night.

Heartbeats, Medicine, and Sleepwalking

Gu Yi woke up to find Liang’s heartbeat irregular and rushed to check on him. She discovered him under the bed, still struggling with his inner turmoil and relying on medication. Though she tried to give him space, Liang instinctively held her back, silently asking her to stay.

Meanwhile, Guan Xingxin had her own drama on the streets, where Yu Dule swooped in like a knight in shining armor. He confessed to her about a youthful love six years ago, showing his softer side.

Back at home, Gu Yi found Liang sleepwalking again, this time with his hands full of random items. Gently guiding him back to bed, she couldn’t help but marvel at his vulnerability—even if he teased her later, likening her efforts to “training a dog.”

A Crowded Office and Lingering Tensions

Gu Yi arrived to meet Mr. Zhang, only to find his office bustling with activity. Left waiting outside, she reflected on the complexities of her relationship with Liang and the unspoken bond growing between them. Even amidst the chaos, she seemed more determined than ever to reach him.

Episode 14 Recap: Big Trees, Awkward Snow, and a Shopping Cart Escape

This episode of Smile Code was a delightful mix of drama, humor, and snowy revelations. Gu Yi faced some tough crowds, awkward feelings, and surprising advice—all while navigating her growing connection with Liang Daiwen. Let’s break it down!

The Tough Crowd and the Big Tree

Gu Yi was ready to shine as a talk show star, but the high-level audience in suits and ties wasn’t having it. Expressionless and cold, they felt more like statues than spectators. Gu Yi realized this might have been a setup and left the stage, tears streaming as she sought solace in the corridor.

Enter Liang Daiwen—dressed as a big tree! Gu Yi couldn’t help but ask why he was there. Liang admitted he was worried she’d mess things up. Before she could fully process that, Liang was called to perform. Watching him awkwardly navigate the stage like a puppet trying to match the audience’s stiff vibe, Gu Yi felt equal parts amused and curious.

Later, Liang encouraged her to express her unhappiness rather than bottle it up. His advice struck a chord, making Gu Yi realize that Liang, in his own quiet way, cared deeply.

Cocktail Party Etiquette and Liang’s Quiet Philosophy

Gu Yi tried to nudge Liang toward learning some social etiquette for high-pressure events. Liang, however, stood his ground, insisting that he didn’t need to adapt to environments that didn’t suit him. “Be yourself,” he said, a philosophy that warmed Gu Yi’s heart.

It’s no wonder she felt a twinge of happiness when Liang fell asleep on her shoulder. Even as Gu Yi reflected on the performance debacle, she found comfort in his steady presence, though Liang later admitted he’d secretly watched her on stage and struggled to sleep afterward.

Workplace Woes and Shopping Cart Therapy

Meanwhile, the “female devil” was caught in a heated battle with her ex-husband, which left Gu Yi frustrated about her own work situation. Feeling unappreciated and stifled by the need to cater to others, she vented to Xu Guanrui, who offered her much-needed comfort. His reminder to focus on her own passions brought her to tears—but also sparked a moment of fun. In true Xu Guanrui fashion, he pushed her around in a shopping cart to lift her spirits. It worked.

Snowfall and Confessions

Gu Yi later discovered that Liang had not only donned the big tree costume for her but had also paid for the talk show setup, a gesture that touched her deeply. Feeling emboldened, she asked Liang point-blank if he liked her. His response? Honest but hesitant—he admitted he wasn’t sure when these feelings began but was uneasy about them.

As snow began to fall, Gu Yi admired the beautiful scene, but Liang found it overwhelming and overstimulating. Gu Yi tried to close the distance between them, only for Liang to pull away, leaving her feeling both disappointed and confused.

Seeking Help and a Sense of Crisis

With Liang avoiding her more and more, Gu Yi turned to Guan Xingxin for advice. Guan suggested creating a “sense of crisis” to shake Liang out of his emotional limbo. Inspired, Gu Yi tried a bold move, dressing up and acting in a way that left Liang visibly uncomfortable. The tension between them built as their awkward conversation took a sharp turn when Gu Yi found herself in danger.

In a moment of instinct, Liang grabbed her—though hilariously, by his tie—creating yet another awkward but memorable encounter.

DramaZen's Opinion

Opinion of Smile Code (2024)

I'm amazed at how far Gu Yi and Liang have come, with Liang slowly opening up and Gu Yi proving she’s not giving up on him anytime soon. Between their emotional breakthroughs and laugh-out-loud moments, this duo keeps us rooting for their happily-ever-after.

The whole couple's meal set debacle was just awkward as could be. That was definitely to show Gu Yi that Liang's senior held a special place in his heart. The other three looked like they would rather be anywhere, but there. Too funny!

However, Liang made up for his blundering mishap when he came to Gu Yi's rescue after she bombed her stage at his company function. It was rather obvious that Liang's senior played a part in the whole setup, and Gu Yi rather suspected she was involved. Watching Liang navigate the stage awkwardly as he played a big tree was too funny and adorable for words with his stoic face intact.

I feel so bad that Liang is trapped in his past to the extent that it haunts him almost every night while he sleeps. No offense to his doctor, but he shouldn't be having such frquent flare ups. It's just sad to watch and breaks my heart.

Meanwhile Yu Dule saves Guan Xingxin, proving that he isn't just a man of all words. It was nice to see him open up and share about himself and I think he is starting to grow on her a bit more.

At the end we see her trying to impress and catch Liang's indifferent attention, but I don't think it will play out like she wants it to. I have a feeling he is going to leave her with a broken heart because he is too hesitant about all these new feelings she is bringing into his once dull life.
