Chapter 14 - The Past That Haunts

The silence between Andrew and Eva grew heavier with each passing minute. The low hum of the car's engine was the only sound filling the space between them as they sped along the dark road. Eva, lost in her thoughts, replayed everything that had led them to this moment. She could understand Andrew's anger. Betrayal had a way of leaving deep scars that never truly healed.

"When you love someone and they betray you, it's like your entire world crumbles," Eva thought to herself. "We live in a delusion, believing they love us back, but the truth is, they were only pretending to get what they needed." She sighed inwardly, thinking of her own past with Josh—the first man she had ever given her heart to, only to have it shattered when he betrayed her without hesitation.

"I understand Andrew," she thought, her chest tightening with the memories of her own pain. "I’ve been through it too. But if he’s willing to move on, I can be patient. I’ll wait for him to heal."

Just as Eva was about to speak, her phone suddenly buzzed in her lap, pulling her back to the present. She glanced down at the screen, her heart sinking when she saw the name flashing across it—"My World." It was Josh. "Why is he calling me now?" she wondered, her heart pounding in her chest. She instinctively cut the call, hoping Andrew hadn’t noticed, but when it rang again almost immediately, her pulse quickened.

Andrew’s eyes flicked to the phone, catching the name that lit up the screen. His face darkened with suspicion, his grip on the steering wheel tightening. “Who is it?” he demanded, his voice icy. “Who needs you so desperately?”

Eva's heart raced as she fumbled to explain. "It's not what you think, Andrew. Please, just let it go."

But Andrew wasn’t having it. His voice rose, cold and authoritative. "Pick up the call and put it on speaker. Now."

Eva hesitated, fear flooding her veins. She didn’t want to hear Josh's voice, didn’t want Andrew to hear it either. But when she remained silent, Andrew's patience snapped.

"Do what I say! Now!" he barked, his anger palpable.

Trembling, Eva swallowed hard and reluctantly accepted the call. She placed the phone on speaker, her hands shaking as Josh’s voice filled the car.

"Hello? Baby, are you there?" Josh’s voice was smooth and confident, as if no time had passed since they had last spoken.

Revulsion surged through Eva, her stomach churning. “Don’t you dare call me that,” she snapped, her voice laced with disgust. "You have no right."

Josh, undeterred by her cold tone, chuckled softly. “Oh, come on, Eva. I know you still love me. You can’t just forget everything we had."

Eva's body stiffened, her hands curling into fists as she fought to hold back tears. "You're wrong, Josh. I don’t feel anything for you anymore," she spat, her voice trembling with anger. "You betrayed me, and I hope you're happy with your new girlfriend. Don’t call me again."

Without waiting for a response, she ended the call, her fingers trembling as she hit the button to hang up. Her breath was shaky as she tried to gather herself, but the damage had already been done.

Andrew pulled the car off the road, coming to a sudden halt. He turned to Eva, his expression a mixture of anger and something else she couldn’t quite place. “Do you still love him?” he asked, his voice low and dangerous.

Eva’s heart hammered in her chest as she looked down at her lap, trying to find the right words. "No," she whispered, barely able to meet his gaze.

But Andrew wasn’t satisfied. His eyes darkened with suspicion, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Then why does your phone say 'My World' when it rang?"

At that, the dam inside Eva broke. Tears spilled down her cheeks as she looked at him, her voice cracking with emotion. “I was in a coma for the past two months... I didn’t have a chance to change it.” Her words were barely audible between sobs. "I didn't even know he would call me now. I would’ve changed it if I had the chance..."

Andrew’s eyes softened for a fraction of a second, but it was fleeting. His jaw clenched tightly as he fought back his own conflicted feelings. "I hate betrayals more than anything," he growled, leaning closer to her. "If you ever do anything behind my back..." His voice trailed off, leaving the threat hanging in the air.

Eva nodded quickly, her tears falling freely now as she whispered, "I won’t... I promise. I won't."

Andrew sat back in his seat, his face expressionless as he started the car again. The rest of the ride passed in tense, heavy silence. Eva wiped her tears, staring out the window at the blur of the city lights. The quiet between them was thick with unspoken words, and Eva’s heart felt like it was breaking all over again—not from Josh’s betrayal, but from the coldness and mistrust that now lay between her and Andrew.

When they finally arrived at the King family mansion, Eva barely felt like herself anymore. Her head pounded, her chest ached, and her eyes were sore from crying. Andrew pulled up in front of the mansion and stopped the car.

He didn’t say a word as he got out, leaving Eva alone in the car for a moment. She took a deep breath, wiping away the last of her tears before stepping out and following him inside.

As they entered the grand, cold halls of the King estate, Eva couldn’t help but feel like she was walking deeper into a prison. Each step she took felt heavier, like she was being pulled into a world where her feelings, her life, no longer belonged to her.

Andrew walked ahead without looking back, his posture rigid as he disappeared into one of the rooms. Eva stood there for a moment, trying to steady her breathing. "This is my life now," she thought once again, the words echoing in her mind. "I just have to survive it."

But deep down, she wasn’t sure how long she could endure it.
