Chapter 47 - Morning Smiles and Workplace Drama

The next morning, Andrew woke up to the soft light filtering through the curtains, his gaze falling on Eva’s peaceful, sleeping face beside him. Her chest rose and fell with each breath, her lips slightly parted. A rare warmth spread through his chest as he smiled to himself, wrapping his arm around her and giving her a gentle squeeze.

He leaned down, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead. “Good morning, sleepyhead,” he whispered.

Carefully, he slipped out of bed, not wanting to wake her, and made his way to his room to get ready for the day.

When Eva finally stirred, she stretched her arms above her head and glanced at the clock. Her eyes widened in panic. “Oh my God! It’s already 8:30!” she gasped, realizing she might be late for work.

She jumped out of bed, rushing to the bathroom and throwing on her clothes. Within minutes, she ran down the stairs, her heart racing. Andrew’s going to be so angry if I’m late! What if he already left without me?

To her relief, she found Andrew standing in the living room, phone in hand, speaking in a low, serious tone. She paused to catch her breath, brushing her hair out of her face, just as he ended the call and turned toward her.

“I’m sorry I overslept,” Eva said quickly, her gaze dropping to the floor, bracing for his usual cold scolding.

But instead of anger, Andrew chuckled—a warm, unexpected sound that left Eva completely stunned.

She blinked up at him, confused. “What’s so funny?”

Andrew shook his head, still grinning. “Nothing. Let’s eat breakfast.”

Eva followed him to the table, watching him cautiously. What is going on with him? she wondered as they sat down. She noticed the small, amused smile lingering on his face throughout the meal. Even the maids whispered among themselves, sneaking glances at their usually stoic master.

Eva stared at Andrew, her brow furrowed. “Okay… seriously. What’s going on? Why are you smiling like that?”

Andrew leaned back in his chair, a mischievous gleam in his eyes. “I never knew a grown-up woman could sleep like that.”

Eva frowned, her confusion deepening. “What do you mean? Sleep like what?”

He chuckled again, reaching for his phone. “Let me show you.”

Andrew tapped his screen a few times before holding it up, revealing a picture of Eva curled up with her leg wrapped around a pillow, looking entirely too cozy.

Eva’s face turned scarlet. “Andrew! Delete that now!

Andrew smirked, clearly enjoying himself. “Why would I? It’s adorable.”

Embarrassed beyond belief, Eva finished her breakfast in record time, avoiding his gaze. She stomped out of the room, grumbling under her breath.

Andrew’s deep laughter followed her. “Angry bird, wait for me!” he called teasingly.

The drive to work was quiet, with Eva sitting stiffly in the passenger seat, her arms crossed as she stared out the window. Andrew glanced at her every so often, a small smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.

When they finally arrived at the company, both went to their respective offices. But as Eva stepped into the familiar hallway, she noticed something off—something in the air, a tension she couldn’t quite place.

“Why does the atmosphere feel weird today?” she wondered aloud.

Edward, passing by, stopped and gave her a sympathetic look. “You didn’t hear? The warehouse caught fire last night. Most of the garments were lost.”

Eva’s heart sank. “No wonder Andrew came home so late,” she thought. “Were those the garments from Lavish Couture?” she asked, realizing the magnitude of the situation.

Edward nodded. “Yes. And with the launch date so close, it’s a huge blow.”

Eva bit her lip, feeling the weight of the loss. This will be a disaster if we don’t recover in time.

As she turned to leave, Edward stopped her again, looking slightly nervous. “By the way, your office has been moved.”

“What? Where? Why?” Eva asked, puzzled.

Edward shifted awkwardly. “Sir’s orders. You’ll have to ask him.” And with that, he scurried off, leaving her even more confused.

Just as Eva stood processing what she'd just heard, Aurora appeared beside her, her face lighting up. “Hey, Eva! I went by your office, but it was empty. Are you leaving the company?”

Eva shook her head quickly. “No, no. My office was moved. I need to ask Mr. King why.”

Before Aurora could reply, a familiar voice called out, “Eva! Are you leaving?”

It was Kai, rushing over with a worried expression. Eva smiled softly at him. “No, I’m not leaving. I just need to figure out why my office was relocated.”

Kai looked visibly relieved, but the moment was interrupted by the arrival of another woman.

“Rora!” Madeline Quinn greeted Aurora with a bright smile before turning her gaze to Kai. “Hi, Kai!”

Kai gave her a curt nod, his expression unreadable as Madeline beamed at him.

Madeline’s eyes landed on Eva. “Who’s this?” she asked curiously.

“I’m Eva Foster,” Eva introduced herself with a polite smile. “I’m the assistant to the CEO.”

Madeline gave her a once-over, her smile never wavering. “Nice to meet you, Eva. I’m Madeline Quinn, but you can call me Maddy. I’m a model here.”

Eva returned the smile warmly. “It’s nice to meet you, Maddy. You have a beautiful smile.”

Madeline’s cheeks flushed with delight. “Thanks!”

Madeline then turned toward Kai, holding out a small, neatly wrapped box. “I made this for you. It’s handmade sandwiches.”

Aurora grinned. “Kai loves sandwiches! But if he doesn’t want them, I’ll gladly take them.”

Eva chuckled as she watched the playful interaction, but something about Kai’s demeanor seemed off.

Kai glanced at the box in Madeline’s hands, his expression distant. “Give them to Rora. I’m not hungry.”

He turned on his heel and walked away without another word, leaving Madeline standing there, her smile fading.

Aurora winced. “That was harsh…” she muttered under her breath.

Eva gave Madeline a sympathetic look. “I better go ask Mr. King about my office. It was nice meeting you, Maddy.”

As Eva walked away, Aurora stayed behind, watching Madeline’s shoulders slump as she wiped away the tears gathering in her eyes.

“Kai… when will you understand that I love you?” Madeline whispered, her heart aching as she stared after him.

Eva reached Andrew’s office, still trying to make sense of everything that had happened. Why would he move my office without telling me?

She knocked on the door, her thoughts swirling. And though she was ready to demand answers, deep down, she knew that with Andrew King, things were never that simple.

And this time, she had the unsettling feeling that her life was about to change—again.
