Chapter 4 - Shadows of Despair

Eva stumbled out of the campus, her vision blurred by tears. The night was cold and dark, just like the void in her heart. She wandered aimlessly, her thoughts spiraling deeper into despair.

"Why is it always me?" she muttered under her breath, her voice breaking as she sobbed louder, the night air chilling her wet cheeks.

Each step she took felt heavier, as though the weight of her shattered heart was pulling her down into the earth. "I wish I could just disappear..." she whispered, feeling a wave of hopelessness consume her.

Her mind reeled back to the memories of her parents, taken too soon, and then to Celine, the one person she thought would be there for her through it all. "You took everything from me, God..." she cried, looking up at the indifferent stars.

"First, my parents... now Celine... and Josh." Eva clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms, trying to hold back the flood of emotions that threatened to overwhelm her.

"Celine, you promised me we’d be together forever." Her voice was barely above a whisper now, the words choking her.

Her mind played cruel tricks on her, bringing back the words Celine had once spoken with such sincerity. "Love you, Eva... I'll stay by your side in our highs and lows." It echoed mockingly in her head, as if the universe was laughing at her naïveté.

Then Josh’s face appeared in her thoughts, his crooked smile that had once made her feel so safe now a symbol of betrayal. "You were the first guy I gave my heart to... and you betrayed me." Her tears flowed freely now, as her body shook with sobs.

The streetlights above flickered as she continued walking, unaware of her surroundings. Suddenly, a blinding light approached her, snapping her out of her thoughts. She felt warmth rush over her, a soft breeze, and then—everything went black.

Eva woke to the sterile smell of antiseptic. The white walls and the beeping machines told her she was in a hospital. Confused, she blinked up at the figure leaning over her.

"Eva... you’re awake." It was Matthew, her stepdad, his voice trembling with relief. "Doctor!" he called out, his eyes filled with both joy and worry.

"Father...?" Eva croaked, her throat dry, her body aching as if she had been hit by something.

"You were hit by a truck, Eva." Matthew’s voice broke as he tried to explain. "You’ve been in a coma for two months."

"Coma?" Eva’s heart raced, her mind trying to catch up with the flood of information. "Two months?"

"Yes, honey," Mia, her sister, entered the room, her voice sharp. "What were you even thinking, wandering the streets in the middle of the night like that? Stupid." Her words were harsh, but there was an underlying concern beneath them.

"I... I wasn’t thinking..." Eva mumbled, memories of that night coming back in bits and pieces. The heartbreak. The despair.

"It’s okay, sweetheart," Matthew said softly, brushing her hair back from her face. "You’re safe now. They don’t deserve you, my angel." He kissed her forehead gently, trying to ease her pain.

But Eva couldn’t stop thinking. The betrayal. The pain. The accident. It all swirled around her mind like a storm she couldn’t escape.

“Get some rest now," Matthew whispered, as her eyelids grew heavy. She drifted off again, hoping that maybe sleep would take away the ache in her heart.
