The past few days had been a whirlwind of emotions for Stormi. Since the discovery of their “Love Tap” language, she had clung to every moment of connection with Rex, using their unique form of communication to bridge the silence between them. Their quiet conversations were a lifeline, but the worry gnawed at her, a constant companion.

One afternoon, as Stormi held Rex’s hand and spoke softly to him, their routine was abruptly shattered. The beeping of the monitor grew frantic, an urgent rhythm that sent a jolt of panic through her.

“Doctor!” Stormi’s voice was filled with alarm as she watched the door swing open.

Dr. Andrews and two nurses rushed into the room, their faces set in grim determination.

“Miss, you need to step outside for now,” Dr. Andrews instructed firmly, but his eyes softened with empathy.

“Why? Is he okay?” Stormi’s voice trembled, her heart pounding.

“I don’t know yet,” the doctor said, trying to reassure her, “but I promise we will do everything we can to save him.”

Stormi’s world tilted as she was guided out of the room. Tears streamed down her face as she stumbled into the hallway, her mind racing. She fumbled for her phone, dialing Wren and Connor with shaking fingers.

“Wren, it’s an emergency,” she said between sobs. “Rex’s machine started beeping. The doctors are in there right now.”

Wren’s calm voice on the other end was a balm to her frayed nerves. “Stormi, stay calm. Everything will be fine. We’re just finishing up here. If you need us, we’ll come right over.”

Before Stormi could respond, the door to Rex’s room opened, and Dr. Andrews called her name. She ended the call abruptly, her heart leaping into her throat.

“Yes, I’m here! Is Rex okay?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Dr. Andrews looked at her with a relieved smile. “Miss, it’s better than okay.”

Stormi’s breath caught in her chest. “What do you mean?”

“The patient is finally awake.”

“WHAT?!” Stormi shouted, her voice echoing down the hallway as she bolted towards the room.

She flung the door open, her eyes locking onto Rex’s face. “Rex… is it true? You’re awake!”

Rex’s voice was a raspy whisper, but there was a note of joy in it. “I’m awake,” he said, trying to muster a smile despite his weakness.

Overwhelmed with relief and love, Stormi threw herself onto the bed, enveloping Rex in a tight embrace. “This is the best day of my life!” she cried, her tears mingling with her laughter.

“I missed you,” Rex murmured, his voice barely audible.

He attempted to return the hug, but his strength was still lacking from months of immobility. Stormi noticed his struggle and held him close, her arms doing all the work for now. “It’s okay. I’ll do all the hugging for now,” she said, her smile warm and reassuring.

Rex managed a weak nod, his eyes shining with relief and gratitude. I’m finally awake. I can live a normal life with my Stormi again, he thought, a deep sense of contentment settling over him.

Stormi’s kisses were a gentle cascade over Rex’s face—his cheeks, his forehead, his nose, and finally his lips. “I love you so much. I missed you,” she whispered between kisses.

Rex, barely able to respond, managed a faint kiss back. “I love you too.”

Stormi took out her phone and started texting Wren the incredible news, her fingers flying over the screen as the doctor returned to Rex’s bedside.

“It’s wonderful that you’ve regained consciousness,” Dr. Andrews said, his tone professional yet kind. “However, even though you’re awake, we need to focus on building up your stamina. Rehabilitation will be necessary for regaining mobility and strength. We’ll also need to address your nutrition and work on putting some weight back on.”

Stormi turned to the doctor, her resolve firm. “Don’t worry, doctor. I’ll make sure to fatten him up,” she said with a playful smile and a wink at Rex.

Rex chuckled softly, a sound that was both weak and filled with determination. “I’ll make sure to work hard.”

Dr. Andrews nodded approvingly. “I’m glad to see you’re both committed. Support is key in this process.”

Stormi looked at Rex with unwavering devotion. “He will always have me.”

Rex’s gaze was filled with love as he looked at Stormi. “And you will always have me.”

Dr. Andrews chuckled as he prepared to leave. “Well, I’ll leave you two lovebirds alone for now.” He gave them a final, encouraging smile before walking out of the room.

As the door closed behind him, Stormi and Rex were left alone, the room filled with a quiet sense of relief and anticipation. Stormi’s heart was full, and Rex’s eyes reflected the same depth of emotion. Together, they faced the future with hope and love, ready to navigate the journey of recovery hand in hand.
