Chapter 26 - Taking Care of Wren

Last Updated on 2024-10-10 19:26:53

The first light of morning filtered gently through the hospital room’s window, casting a warm glow over Wren’s face. As she woke up, she shifted in bed, her gaze falling on Connor, who had fallen asleep beside her. His head rested lightly on the edge of the bed, and his hand clasped hers with a tender grip.

The sight stirred a complex mix of emotions within Wren. Despite everything she had endured, Connor had chosen to stay by her side. It was an act of unwavering devotion that she could scarcely comprehend. A pang of guilt gnawed at her—she felt undeserving of such a man. Yet, seeing him there, she began to question if maybe she should accept his care. His steadfast presence was a clear sign that he wasn’t going to give up on her.

Connor’s eyes fluttered open, and he met Wren’s gaze with a sleepy but warm smile.

“You’re awake,” he said softly, his voice tinged with relief. “Are you feeling any better?”

Wren managed a small, grateful smile. “I guess I am.”

Connor shifted, stretching slightly before pushing himself up. “Let me get you checked out and we’ll head home.”

Wren’s expression faltered. “I will go back to my place.”

Connor’s eyes narrowed in determination. “No, you’re going to stay with me.”

Wren’s eyebrows furrowed. “I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

Connor leaned forward, his tone firm but gentle. “Stormi and I already talked about it.”

Wren’s curiosity piqued. “What?”

Connor’s gaze was unwavering. “I can work from home and keep an eye on you. Stormi has school and work.”

“I am not a baby,” Wren protested.

Connor’s resolve hardened. “I know, but the doctor said you should be with someone for some time.”

Wren sighed, frustration and resignation mingling in her voice. “I can take care of myself. You guys don’t need to watch me.”

“No,” Connor said, shaking his head. “And that’s the last time I’ll say it. You are coming home with me.”

Realizing that her protests would be futile, Wren capitulated. “Fine. I’ll go home with you.”

A short while later, they arrived at Connor’s house. The door was already ajar, and Wren’s suitcases were waiting just inside. It was clear that Stormi had been busy, arranging everything for Wren’s return.

“I guess you guys really did work everything out,” Wren said, a hint of exasperation in her voice.

Connor looked at her with a reassuring smile. “Don’t be mad. We just want to take care of you.”

Wren nodded, her heart softening despite her reservations. “I know.”

As Connor busied himself putting Wren’s belongings away, she settled on the couch, the room’s cozy atmosphere offering a brief respite from the turmoil she’d faced. The television murmured softly in the background, but her mind was elsewhere.

Connor’s voice broke through her thoughts. “Are you hungry?”

Wren blinked, pulling herself from her reverie. “I guess I could eat something.”

“What are you hungry for?” Connor asked, his tone light and hopeful.

Wren hesitated, then said, “You don’t have to make anything special for me.”

Connor’s eyes twinkled with determination. “I want to.”

Wren smiled faintly. “I want soup and a grilled cheese sandwich.”

“Coming right up,” Connor said, his voice filled with a comforting warmth.

As Connor prepared the meal, Wren sat quietly, lost in thought. The gentle hum of the television was a soothing backdrop, but her mind raced with questions and fears. What should I do? Am I ruining his life? He seems to really love me. He was so disappointed when I left him. Should I stay or try and leave again?

The clinking of bowls on the table drew her attention back to the present. Connor placed the food in front of her, his face etched with concern as he noticed her distant expression.

Connor set his own bowl down and looked at her with a mixture of worry and affection. “Penny for your thoughts?”

Wren met his gaze, her eyes reflecting a mixture of gratitude and uncertainty. She took a deep breath, finding solace in his unwavering support. “Just thinking about everything,” she said softly. “About what’s next.”

Connor reached out, his hand resting gently on hers. “We’ll figure it out together,” he said. “I’m here for you, and I’m not going anywhere.”

As Wren looked into his earnest eyes, a sense of calm began to settle over her. For the first time in a long while, she allowed herself to hope, to believe that maybe—just maybe—she could find a path forward with Connor by her side.
