Chapter 47 - A New Step

The days following that poignant night had been a gradual journey of healing and discovery for both Wren and Connor. They had grown closer, their shared experiences and tender moments knitting them together in ways neither had anticipated.

Connor sat in his home office, a space cluttered with papers and half-empty coffee mugs, engrossed in the final touches of his work. The quiet hum of his computer was the only sound, creating a bubble of calm amid his busy day. The door creaked open, and Wren stepped in, her presence bringing an immediate shift in the room’s atmosphere.

“Connor,” she said, her voice soft but carrying an undercurrent of urgency.

Connor looked up from his desk, a smile forming on his face. “What is it, Sunshine?”

Wren hesitated for a moment, her eyes darting between the clock and Connor’s focused expression. “Are you busy?”

“I’m just finishing up. I have ten more minutes of work,” Connor replied, his attention returning to his papers.

“Do you think you could help me?” Wren asked, her voice tinged with a mix of nervousness and hope.

Connor’s interest piqued instantly. “With what?”

“My intimacy assignment from the doctor,” she said, a hint of pink coloring her cheeks.

Connor’s heart skipped a beat, his cheeks flushing as he tried to compose himself. “Umm… It’s a little bit hot in here.”

Wren raised an eyebrow, her gaze curious. “Is it? That’s strange; I feel fine.”

Connor’s face betrayed his embarrassment, and he scrambled to change the subject. “What intimate thing do you want to do?”

Wren bit her lip, her eyes meeting his with a mixture of determination and apprehension. “Taking a walk and holding hands. Would that be okay?”

Connor’s eyes brightened, his earlier embarrassment quickly replaced by eagerness. “Sure. I definitely would like to do that.”

“Okay. Let me know when you’re finished. I’ll wait in the living room,” Wren said, turning toward the door.

Connor watched her leave, a small smile tugging at his lips. Part of Wren still wrestled with fear, but seeing Connor’s excitement sparked a warmth within her. She was uncertain about her feelings, yet something about his happiness resonated deeply with her.

Why does his happiness make me happy? Do I really like him, or is this actually love? Wren pondered as she settled onto the couch, her thoughts a whirl of confusion and newfound emotion.

Maybe I never loved Trevor like I thought I did. Maybe it was all just wishful thinking.

Her introspection was interrupted by Connor, who appeared moments later with an exuberant energy that was hard to miss. He was clearly eager for their outing.

“Come on, let’s go,” Connor said, stretching his hand out toward her.

Wren stood up, her heart racing slightly as she walked over to him. With a touch of hesitation, she placed her small fingers in his. The contact sent a jolt of electricity through her, a surprising but pleasant sensation. She looked up at him, offering a small, shy smile.

Connor felt his heart flutter uncontrollably, overwhelmed by the simple yet profound act of holding hands. What am I going to do? We are just holding hands, and I can’t control myself.

Wren tugged gently on his arm, her voice filled with a mix of determination and playfulness. “Connor, are you ready?”

Connor snapped out of his reverie, his face flushing as he nodded. “Umm… yeah… let’s go.”

With their hands intertwined, they ventured out into the cool evening air. Each step they took felt like a step toward a new beginning, an exploration of the connection that had quietly blossomed between them. For Wren, the act of holding Connor’s hand was both a test of her courage and a hopeful leap into the unknown.

As they walked side by side, the world outside seemed to fade away, leaving just the two of them and the promise of what might lie ahead.
