Chapter 27 - You Can Trust Me

Last Updated on 2024-10-10 19:27:18

Wren sat in the cozy corner of Connor’s living room, her mind a swirling storm of thoughts and doubts. The warmth of the sun filtering through the curtains was a stark contrast to the chill in her heart. She wondered if it was okay to voice her fears, to admit to Connor how deeply conflicted she felt. The thought of finding happiness again seemed almost foreign, yet a part of her yearned for it.

Connor, sitting across from her, noticed her distraction. He reached out and gently waved his hand in front of her face.

“Hey… Can you hear me?”

Wren blinked, breaking free from her internal struggle. “What? Did you say something?”

“I was calling you,” Connor said with a hint of concern. “Are you okay?”

Wren offered a small, reassuring smile. “Yeah, I’m fine.”

Connor’s gaze remained steady. “What are you thinking about?”

Wren hesitated, her heart racing as she weighed the decision to speak her truth. “Can I be honest?”

“Of course,” Connor replied, his eyes full of patience and understanding.

Wren took a deep breath, her voice trembling slightly. “One part of me wants to be with you because I think I can be happy again. But…” She trailed off, the words catching in her throat.

“But?” Connor prodded gently.

Wren sat in silence, searching for the right way to express her inner turmoil. “Another part of me keeps saying I don’t deserve happiness.”

Connor’s heart ached as he saw the struggle etched on Wren’s face. He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close in a gesture of comfort. But as soon as he touched her, he felt her body tense and heard a small, startled sound escape her lips.

“Umm… can you not touch me?” Wren’s voice was barely a whisper, her eyes wide with discomfort.

Connor immediately released her, his expression clouded with concern. “Are you scared of me?”

Wren looked down, a single tear slipping down her cheek. “Since Trevor did…” She couldn’t finish the sentence, her voice breaking. “Since he touched me, I don’t like to be touched.”

Connor’s heart squeezed painfully at her admission. “It’s okay. I understand.” He paused, searching for the right words. “Can I say something?”

Wren nodded, her gaze still averted. “Yes.”

“You definitely deserve to be happy,” Connor said softly. “And I promise I will do everything I can to make you feel loved.”

Wren shook her head slowly. “I don’t know if I can accept you and even love again.”

Connor’s voice was firm, yet gentle. “You can.”

Wren’s eyes were filled with uncertainty. “Connor, I can’t even be touched now.”

“You just need time,” Connor replied, his tone soothing. “In time, you will learn to trust again. I will love you enough for the both of us until you can.”

Wren’s tears flowed freely once more. “I really don’t deserve you. You’re too good for me.”

Connor reached out, wiping away her tears with a tender touch. “I’m not. You are perfect for me. I’ve liked you for a long time. I just never had a chance to tell you.”

Wren’s curiosity was piqued. “How long?”

“Since before Trevor,” Connor admitted, his voice heavy with regret. “I hate myself.”

Wren looked at him, puzzled. “Why?”

“If I wouldn’t have been such a coward and asked you out, maybe we would have dated. Then you wouldn’t have met Trevor.”

A small, wistful smile touched Wren’s lips. “That would have been nice.”

Connor’s eyes were full of earnest hope. “So will you let me be with you and love you?”

Wren hesitated, the weight of her past and the uncertainty of the future battling within her. “I’m not sure.”

“Please,” Connor said, his voice laced with desperation and affection. “Let’s give it a try. I promise I won’t force you to do anything you don’t want to.”

Wren looked at Connor, the sincerity in his eyes compelling her to consider his offer. “I’ll try.”

Connor’s face lit up with a hopeful smile. “Can I hug you?”

Wren saw the earnest expectation in his eyes, and despite her reservations, she couldn’t find it in her heart to let him down. “We can try. Just don’t hug me too closely.”

Connor nodded, his expression softening. He wrapped his arms around her gently, his embrace light and respectful. He surprised her with a quick, tender kiss to her forehead before pulling back, allowing her space. He sat beside her on the couch, his presence a steady, comforting anchor.

As Wren leaned into the comfort of Connor’s gentle touch, she felt a glimmer of hope ignite within her. It was a fragile beginning, but it was a start. And in that moment, she allowed herself to believe that maybe—just maybe—she could learn to trust and find happiness again.
