Chapter 50 - A Moment of Vulnerability

The soft creak of the door announced Connor’s entrance into Wren’s room. He paused, sensing a change in the atmosphere. The room was quiet, save for the muffled sounds of quiet sniffling. Connor’s heart sank at the sound.

“Are you crying?” he asked gently.

Wren quickly turned to face him, her eyes red and her cheeks streaked with tears. She fumbled to brush them away, but Connor’s concerned expression told her he wasn’t buying the pretense.

Connor rushed to her side, his worry etched deeply into his features. “Hey, don’t hide your tears.”

Wren attempted a weak smile. “I wasn’t… Something just got into my eye.”

“Don’t lie,” Connor said softly, but firmly. “Why are you crying?”

Wren sighed in frustration, realizing there was no escaping the conversation. “I was writing my journal entry from our experiment yesterday.”

Connor’s brow furrowed. “That made you cry? Did I do something wrong yesterday?”

“No…no… it has nothing to do with you,” Wren insisted, though her voice wavered.

“Then what is it?”

Wren looked away, her shoulders slumping. “I just got depressed because I realized what a burden I am.”

Connor shook his head, stepping closer. “You’re not a burden.”

“I am,” Wren said quietly. “And you know it.”

“No, you’re not,” Connor countered. “You’re just troubled right now and need help.”

“I know you’ll get tired of me after a while,” Wren said, her voice barely above a whisper.

“Why would you think that?”

“No boyfriend will want to be with someone who can’t be touched and has to ask for permission all the time.”

Connor’s expression softened, a mix of determination and tenderness in his eyes. “You won’t be like that forever. And you can be touched.”

“No I can’t, and it might be a long time before I can be again.”

Connor shook his head, his resolve unwavering. “Yes, you can.”

Wren looked at him, doubtful. “Name one time I could be touched.”

Connor paused, then said, “Every time you had nightmares from your past, you let me hold you in my arms while you drifted back to sleep.”

Wren fell silent, contemplating his words. She had indeed let him hold her during those moments of vulnerability, though she hadn’t fully acknowledged it.

Connor continued, “Also, you held my hand almost all night yesterday. You even held it while we ate our food. I didn’t say anything because you seemed happy.”

Wren’s eyes widened in surprise. “I did?”

“Yes, you did.”

“I didn’t realize that,” Wren admitted. “I thought I had let go.”

“No,” Connor said, smiling gently. “So you see, there is hope.”

Wren hesitated, still troubled. “But won’t it get old to deal with me?”

“No,” Connor said firmly. “I wouldn’t have agreed to our relationship if I thought that way.”

Wren’s shoulders relaxed slightly. “I guess so. That does make sense.”

Connor reached out and took her hand, holding it gently. “So quit saying those things to me. I love you no matter what.”

Wren looked at him, her heart full of conflicted emotions. “You are really too good to me. Why couldn’t I have met you first?”

Connor’s gaze softened with a hint of sadness. “I wish that all the time.”

They stood together in the quiet room, their hands linked and hearts laid bare. In that moment, amidst the fears and uncertainties, Wren felt a glimmer of hope. Maybe Connor’s unwavering support and love could guide her through her darkest doubts.
