Chapter 110 - A Day in the Sun

Last Updated on 2024-10-10 23:24:53

The summer sun cast a warm, golden glow over the park as two couples sat on a picnic blanket, their laughter mingling with the joyous shouts of their children. Wren and Conner, along with Stormi and Rex, had gathered for a relaxing day out, their hearts swelling with pride as they watched their six-year-olds play in the distance.

Wren leaned back on the blanket with a wistful sigh. “I can’t believe our little ones are six years old.”

Stormi, who was nestled comfortably next to Rex, nodded in agreement. “I know, they’ve grown so fast.”

Connor, with his arm wrapped around Wren, chuckled. “That’s what kids do, Sunshine.”

Rex, stretching out and propping himself up on one elbow, glanced over at their son. “Sky still seems to be a troublemaker.” He pointed to Sky, who was currently engaged in a game of tag with Riley.

All four of them turned their attention to the scene unfolding before them. Sky was in the midst of pulling Riley’s pigtails, his mischievous grin unmistakable.

“Stop it!” Riley cried out, swatting at Sky’s hand.

“Stop pulling!” she begged, her voice tinged with frustration.

“I don’t want to,” Sky replied stubbornly, his grin widening.

Rowan, Riley’s protective older brother, marched over and firmly intervened. “Sky, that’s enough.”

Sky pouted but persisted. “I’m just teasing her.”

Rowan’s gaze grew stern. “Leave her alone.”

Despite Rowan’s reprimand, Sky continued to chase Riley, his laughter echoing through the park. Riley’s exasperated pleas fell on deaf ears.

“It’s not funny,” Riley said, her voice almost a whimper now.

“Leave me alone!” she repeated.

Sky, oblivious to her distress, cooed teasingly. “I don’t want to, my cute little butterfly.”

Riley’s face flushed with irritation. “Ughhh…I’m not a butterfly,” she muttered under her breath. “Although I am cute.”

Rowan stepped in, placing himself between Sky and Riley and pulling his sister behind him. “Grow up. I said that’s enough.”

Riley peeked over Rowan’s shoulder, her eyes flashing with defiance. “Yeah, I told you to stop.”

Sky smirked and taunted, “Hiding behind brother, scaredy cat.”

Riley, hands on her hips, jumped out from behind Rowan with a newfound determination. “I’m not scared of you.”

Sky’s eyes sparkled with challenge. “Prove it.”

Rowan, concerned for his sister’s well-being, tried to intervene. “Riley, you don’t have to prove anything.”

But Riley had already formulated her plan. A mischievous glint in her eye, she approached Sky with purpose.

“Hey, Sky…” she began.

Sky turned towards her, his expression one of confusion. “Wha—”

Before he could finish his question, Riley planted a quick, surprising kiss on his cheek and dashed off.

Sky stood frozen, his face a deep shade of red. “What…what just happened?”

Rowan, exasperated, hit his forehead with his palm. “Ughh…this sister of mine will drive me crazy someday.”

As Sky shook off his shock and started running after Riley, his voice was full of determination. “Butterfly, wait for me! You can’t just kiss me and run.”

Riley’s laughter rang out as she sprinted away. “Catch me if you can!”

Sky’s competitive spirit flared as he chased after her, his laughter mingling with Riley’s giggles. “Just you wait!”

Rowan, shaking his head with a smirk, muttered, “Boring.”

Stormi, her eyes following Sky’s pursuit with a knowing smile, teased, “Our son is just like his father when he chases girls.”

Rex, grinning, defended himself. “Hey, I wasn’t that bad.”

Connor leaned in with a playful glint in his eye. “I seem to remember something similar.”

Wren, joining in the laughter, lightly nudged Stormi. “Don’t pick on Rex. Besides, Storm, you always said how sweet and nervous Rex was when you first dated.”

Stormi feigned confusion, raising an eyebrow. “Did I? Hmm, I don’t seem to remember.”

Their laughter filled the air, a warm reminder of their long-standing friendships and shared memories. As they continued to watch their children, Wren’s voice grew thoughtful.

“I wonder what these three will be like when they are older,” she mused, her gaze following Riley and Sky’s playful chase.

Stormi’s eyes softened with a nostalgic smile. “Me too.”

The two couples continued to chat, their conversation a blend of fond reminiscences and hopeful speculations. The park around them buzzed with the simple joy of a day well spent, as their children’s laughter became the soundtrack of their lives, echoing the love and camaraderie that bound them together.
