Chapter 14 - Trust in the Quiet Moments

Connor walked Wren over to his car, his hand lightly resting on her back as he guided her. When they reached the passenger side, he opened the door for her. Wren hesitated for a moment, her eyes searching his face for any sign of doubt, but Connor’s expression remained calm and reassuring. She slid into the seat, and without a word, Connor closed the door and walked around to the driver’s side.

The silence in the car was heavy as they drove towards Connor’s apartment. Wren stared out the window, the passing streetlights casting fleeting shadows across her face. She could feel her pulse quickening, her thoughts racing.

What the hell am I thinking? How could I say yes to him? Wren’s inner turmoil gnawed at her. She had been so sure of her decision moments ago, but now doubt crept in, filling the spaces between her thoughts.

Her gaze drifted towards Connor, cautiously at first, then with a growing curiosity. She allowed herself a brief moment to admire him. His dark brown eyes were focused on the road, their depth seemingly endless, matching the rich hue of his hair. His jawline was sharp, his profile striking. He was undeniably handsome, and Wren couldn’t help but wonder how someone like him could still want her after everything she had been through.

Connor’s lips curved into a slight smile, and without taking his eyes off the road, he asked, “Do you like what you see?”

Wren’s heart skipped a beat, caught off guard by his playful tone. She quickly looked away, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment. “Umm… you really can just drop me off at my apartment,” she suggested, trying to change the subject.

But Connor shook his head, his voice gentle but firm. “I said I would take care of you, and that’s what I intend to do. Don’t worry.”

Wren fell silent again, her fingers twisting in her lap. She could feel her anxiety bubbling up, a mix of fear and shame making it hard to breathe. Connor glanced at her, noticing the tension in her posture, and his expression softened.

“You can trust me, Wren,” he said quietly. “I won’t hurt you. I’m not him.”

Wren’s throat tightened at his words, a lump forming that she couldn’t quite swallow down. “I know you’re a good person, Connor. I just… I don’t want you to see me like this.”

“Why?” Connor’s voice was calm, patient. “There’s nothing for you to be embarrassed about.”

“Are you sure you’ll still feel that way after you see all my marks?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper, the weight of her shame pressing down on her.

Connor’s expression grew serious, his eyes darkening with emotion. “That could never change my mind. If anything, it just makes me angry.”

Wren looked at him, surprised. “Angry?”

“Angry that I couldn’t save you,” Connor said, his voice thick with regret. “That I wasn’t there to stop him before he hurt you.”

Wren felt a warmth spread through her chest, a glimmer of hope where there had only been despair. Maybe he really does care for me, she thought, the idea both terrifying and comforting.

Soon, they arrived at Connor’s apartment. He parked the car and led Wren inside, his hand resting lightly on her back once more. Wren took in her surroundings as they stepped into the living room. The apartment was spacious and tidy, with warm lighting and tasteful decor. It was clear that Connor took pride in his home.

“Sit on the couch,” Connor instructed, his tone gentle. “I’ll be back with the medicine kit.”

Wren nodded and sat down, sinking into the plush cushions. She watched as Connor disappeared into another room, returning a moment later with a small medical box in his hands. He sat down next to her, close enough that she could feel his warmth, but not so close as to make her uncomfortable.

As he opened the kit, Connor took a closer look at her in the light and realized that before anything else, she needed a bath. Her clothes were torn and dirty, her skin smudged with grime and dried blood.

“How about I give you some of my clothes, and you go wash up first?” Connor suggested gently. “Then I’ll bandage you up.”

Wren hesitated, uncertainty flickering in her eyes. “Are you sure it’s okay?”

“Of course,” Connor reassured her with a soft smile. “Follow me.”

He led her down a short hallway to a bathroom and handed her a towel, a t-shirt, and a pair of shorts. The clothes were simple, but clean and soft.

“Thank you,” Wren whispered, her voice barely audible.

Connor nodded, stepping back to give her space. “Take your time.”

Wren closed the door behind her and leaned against it, letting out a long sigh. It had been an impossibly long day, and the weight of everything that had happened pressed down on her. She turned on the water, letting it run until steam filled the small room. As she undressed and stepped into the warm embrace of the shower, Wren let the water wash away the grime, the blood, and the tears.

For the first time in what felt like an eternity, she allowed herself to relax, if only for a moment. She wasn’t sure what the future held, or if she could truly trust Connor with her heart, but for now, she was willing to try.
