Chapter 41 - A Step Toward Healing

Last Updated on 2024-10-10 19:34:38

The days that followed Wren's incident were a whirlwind of worry, determination, and quiet resolve. Wren remained in the hospital, her mind slowly mending from the shock, while Connor and Rex were busy outside, working tirelessly to make sure justice was served.

Sarah’s cruel lie hung over them like a dark cloud, but Connor and Rex were relentless. They dug into every corner of Sarah’s story, determined to expose the truth and erase any traces of the damage she had threatened to unleash. With a mix of subtle influence and undeniable proof, they ensured that no photo of Wren had ever been sent to anyone. Sarah’s words had been nothing more than a vicious attempt to push Wren over the edge.

And Sarah didn’t escape unscathed. Connor and Rex's efforts culminated in her facing the consequences of her actions. Her family, already on shaky financial ground, now found themselves in an even worse situation, the weight of their daughter’s misdeeds adding to their burden. Justice had been served, and Connor could finally shift his focus back to Wren, who needed him more than ever.

One afternoon, as Wren sat by the window in her hospital room, staring at the dull gray sky, Connor entered with a determined look on his face. He had something important to discuss, something that had been on his mind ever since the night Wren was brought to the hospital.

"Sunshine," he began, using the nickname that always softened the harsh edges of her anxiety, "I found a doctor who comes highly recommended."

Wren turned to look at him, her eyes still clouded with doubt. "Do you really think it’s necessary for me to talk to someone?"

"Yes," Connor replied without hesitation. "They can help you get rid of all this sadness."

Wren’s gaze dropped to her hands, her fingers twisting together. "They can’t erase what happened, though."

Connor moved closer, his voice gentle but firm. "I know they can’t erase it, but they can help you overcome it."

"How?" she asked, her voice breaking. "How can they help me forget something so horrible?"

Connor knelt in front of her, taking her hands in his. "I don’t know exactly how, but you have to trust that they know what they’re doing. It’s their job, Wren. They’ve helped people through things like this before."

Wren looked into his eyes, searching for some reassurance, something to hold onto. "You really think it’ll help?"

"I do," Connor said, his voice steady. "And even if you think it’s hopeless, please, just try. For me."

Wren saw the pleading look in his eyes, the raw vulnerability that he rarely let show. She knew how much this meant to him, how much he needed her to be okay. For a moment, the weight of her pain lifted just enough for her to consider it. She nodded slowly.

"Okay," she said quietly. "If that’s what you want."

Connor’s face lit up with a smile, the tension in his shoulders easing. "It is. Go get ready, and let’s go."

Wren blinked, surprised. "Right now?"

"Yes," Connor confirmed. "I already made an appointment for you today."

Wren hesitated. The idea of talking to a stranger about her deepest fears and darkest thoughts was terrifying. But seeing the determination in Connor’s eyes, she knew she had to try. Not just for him, but for herself too.

"Okay," she said, standing up. "Give me a few minutes."

She walked into the hospital bathroom, closing the door behind her. As she stared at her reflection in the mirror, she barely recognized the girl looking back at her. There was a time when she wouldn’t have hesitated to meet a challenge head-on, but now… Now, she was scared of everything. But maybe, just maybe, talking to someone could help her find that part of herself again.

She washed her face, brushed her hair, and straightened her clothes. With each small action, she felt a little stronger, a little more prepared to face whatever came next. When she was done, she took a deep breath and opened the door.

"I’m ready," she said, stepping out.

Connor was waiting for her, his smile warm and encouraging. "Okay, I already did the discharge paperwork. Let’s go."

As they walked out of the hospital together, Wren felt a strange mix of fear and hope. She wasn’t sure if this was the right thing to do, but for the first time in a long while, she was willing to try. And as long as Connor was by her side, she knew she wouldn’t have to face it alone.
