Chapter 9 - Unspoken Truths

The sun was beginning its descent, casting a warm golden hue over the campus as Riley and Connor met up outside the main building. Riley approached his brother with an excited glint in his eyes, eager to share the day’s developments.

“Guess what?” Riley said, his voice carrying a note of anticipation.

Connor looked up from his phone, raising an eyebrow. “What?”

“Wren is back.”

Connor’s expression shifted to concern. “Is she okay?”

Riley’s face grew serious. “She looks sad and will barely talk.”

Connor’s heart sank. Wren had always been a beacon of warmth and joy. Seeing her like this was jarring. “Did you ask about Trevor?”

“Yeah, she said she found out he was cheating, so they broke up. He won’t leave her alone and is stalking her,” Riley explained, his voice heavy with frustration.

Connor clenched his jaw, anger and sorrow mixing in his chest. The thought of Wren suffering was unbearable. “I can’t believe Trevor did that to her.”

Riley nodded. “Right… I never liked him.”

Connor sighed, his eyes reflecting his thoughts. “She deserves better.”

Riley’s eyes twinkled mischievously. “Now’s your chance, big bro.”

Connor played dumb, though a blush crept into his cheeks. “I don’t know what you mean.”

Riley smirked. “Don’t play dumb. I know you like Wren.”

Connor’s heart skipped a beat, but he tried to keep his composure. “No, I don’t.”

“Yes, you do. And it’s been for a long time,” Riley insisted.

Connor’s defenses were wavering. “You’re mistaken.”

“Just admit you like her. I’ll help you,” Riley pressed.

Connor hesitated, unsure of the timing. “Even if I did like her, she probably hates guys now.”

Riley’s expression softened. “If you show her how caring you are and prove that not all guys are like that jerk, she might see you differently.”

Connor’s gaze was distant, his mind occupied with thoughts of Wren. “She just sees me as your older brother.”

“Change that and make her see you as boyfriend material,” Riley suggested.

Connor mulled over the idea, feeling the weight of his brother’s words. “I don’t know.”

Riley’s voice took on a determined tone. “I’ll test the waters and see what she thinks.”

Connor’s heart raced at the thought. “Are you sure it’s a good idea?”

“Trust me,” Riley said with confidence.

Connor looked thoughtful, torn between his desire to protect Wren and his fear of disrupting her healing process. The image of Wren in his arms, safe and comforted, was tempting. He sighed deeply. “Okay, let me know what you find out.”

“Will do. Later, bro,” Riley said, his grin returning.

“Bye,” Connor replied, watching as Riley walked away.

As Connor stood there, his mind was a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions. He knew he wanted to be there for Wren, to offer her the comfort and support she needed. But he also feared the timing might not be right. Yet, the idea of being close to her, of making her feel safe again, was a powerful draw.

With a deep breath, Connor set his jaw, resolving to find a way to be there for Wren in whatever capacity she needed.
