Chapter 34 - Nightmares and Comfort

Last Updated on 2024-10-10 19:30:47

The stillness of the night was broken by a piercing scream that shattered the quiet darkness.

Connor bolted upright in bed, his heart racing as the sound echoed through the house. In an instant, he was out of bed and sprinting down the hallway, his feet barely making contact with the floor.

He threw open the door to Wren’s room, his breath catching at the sight before him. She was thrashing wildly in her sleep, her hands gripping the bedsheets with white-knuckled intensity. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she sobbed, her voice raw and filled with terror.

“No…no…please don’t. I’m sorry. Just please stop.”

Connor’s chest tightened with a mix of anger and hurt. Anger that she was suffering, and hurt that he couldn’t protect her from the torment she was reliving in her sleep. Without hesitation, he climbed into bed beside her, wrapping his arms around her trembling body. He pulled her close, his voice a gentle murmur in the darkness.

“Shhh…it’s okay. It’s okay, Sunshine. I’m here.”

But Wren’s cries continued, her voice breaking with desperation.

“Don’t touch me there! Stop…please stop.”

Connor’s grip tightened, his heart aching as he held her. It had been so long since she had been haunted by these nightmares, and now they had returned with a vengeance. He pressed his cheek to her tear-soaked hair, trying to anchor her to the present.

“Sunshine…listen to my voice. It’s Connor. I’m here.”

Gradually, her thrashing slowed, though her sobs still came in ragged gasps.

“Connor,” she whispered, the name slipping from her lips like a lifeline.

“Yes, Sunshine, it’s me. You’re safe.”

Her eyes fluttered open, wide and disoriented as they adjusted to the darkness. She scanned the room, her breath coming in quick, shallow bursts. When her gaze finally found Connor’s face, recognition dawned, and the panic in her eyes softened. She clung to him, burying her face in his chest.

“Connor…” she murmured, her voice filled with fragile relief.

“Sunshine,” he whispered back, his heart swelling with tenderness.

Wren pulled back just enough to look into his eyes, her own filled with a mix of vulnerability and gratitude. “I love you.”

Connor’s heart skipped a beat, warmth flooding through him. “I love you too.”

Wren’s grip on him tightened, as if she feared he might disappear. “Can you stay here with me tonight?”

“Of course,” Connor replied without hesitation.

She sighed, a sound of weary acceptance. “Thank you.”

“Shhh…let’s go back to sleep. You’re safe now. It was just a dream.” Connor gently wiped the tears from her face, his thumb brushing away the remnants of her fear.

As he held her, Connor couldn’t help but feel a quiet joy. She was finally beginning to let him in, to trust him enough to seek comfort in his presence. The days when she would tense up at his touch were fading, replaced by moments like this—moments where she reached for him and didn’t pull away.

“Connor?” Wren’s voice was a tentative whisper.

“Yes?” he replied softly.

“Aren’t you tired of me? This must be exhausting for you.”

Connor’s heart clenched at the sadness in her tone. “Never. I’ll never be tired of you.”

Wren hesitated, her voice trembling with uncertainty. “You don’t find me to be a burden?”

“Not at all,” Connor answered, his voice firm with conviction.

Wren’s doubt lingered, her eyes searching his face. “Are you sure?”

“Yes…positive,” he reassured her, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead.

Wren’s voice was barely audible as she spoke again. “You could be with someone normal.”

Connor’s expression softened, a bittersweet smile tugging at his lips. “You are normal. I love you no matter what happens.”

Tears welled up in Wren’s eyes once more, but this time they were tears of overwhelming emotion. “I don’t deserve you.”

Connor’s voice was gentle but firm as he responded. “Don’t say that, or I’ll be mad. I love you and only you.”

A small, shaky smile formed on Wren’s lips. “I love you too.”

Connor tucked her closer to his side, his hand moving to stroke her hair in soothing motions. He could feel her body relaxing, the tension slowly ebbing away as she nestled against him.

“Quit talking and let’s go back to sleep,” he murmured, his voice a comforting lull in the quiet room.

“Okay. Nights,” Wren whispered, her eyes already drifting shut.

Connor kissed the top of her head, his heart full as he whispered back, “Goodnight, Sunshine.”

With Wren safely tucked in his arms, Connor closed his eyes, his heart finally at peace knowing that she was safe in his embrace. And as they drifted off to sleep together, the nightmares that had haunted Wren began to fade, chased away by the warmth of the love they shared.
