Chapter 33 - Where Is She?

Last Updated on 2024-10-10 19:30:21

Connor’s heart pounded as he burst through the infirmary doors, his face a mask of frantic urgency.

“Where is she?” His voice was rough with fear and frustration.

Riley looked up from his seat by the door, trying to calm the storm of concern in Connor’s eyes. “Calm down, bro. She’s still lying down.”

“Why isn’t she awake yet?” Connor’s voice cracked with anxiety.

Stormi, who was standing near the nurse’s station, turned to face him. “The doctor said she’ll be waking up soon. She had a panic attack.”

Connor’s hands balled into fists at his sides. “I told her to just stay home and take online classes. She wasn’t ready to go back.”

Stormi shook her head slightly, understanding the stubborn nature they were dealing with. “She would have never listened.”

Riley nodded in agreement. “Yeah, she’s super stubborn. You know that.”

Connor’s gaze was unwavering, his worry etched deeply into his features. “I know. Take me to her.”

Riley and Stormi led him to the small, sterile room where Wren lay. The steady beeping of the heart monitor was the only sound as they approached her bed. Connor’s breath hitched when he saw her sleeping form, her face calm and serene despite the turmoil she had endured.

He pulled up a chair beside the bed and took her hand gently, his thumb brushing over her knuckles. His other hand moved to stroke her hair, trying to offer comfort through his touch.

“Sunshine, it’s time to wake up,” he whispered, his voice a soothing murmur.

Inside her restless mind, Wren was trapped in a nightmarish haze, the warmth of the voice piercing through the fog. Why can’t I wake up? That voice sounds so warm and magical. I want that person with me.

Connor felt the subtle twitch of her fingers, a glimmer of hope amid his growing anxiety. “Sunshine, can you hear me? You need to wake up now.”

Slowly, her eyes fluttered open, focusing directly on Connor’s face. A faint, tired smile curved her lips as she recognized him.

“You’re here,” she whispered, her voice barely more than a breath.

Connor’s own smile widened with relief. “I’m here.”

Without warning, Wren’s eyes filled with panic, and she lunged forward, her arms wrapping around him with desperate urgency. Connor barely managed to steady himself as she clung to him, her fingers gripping the back of his shirt with a fierce intensity.

“I was so scared,” she sobbed into his shoulder, her body trembling with emotion.

“Shh…it’s okay,” Connor murmured soothingly, his arms encircling her in a protective embrace. “I’m here now. I won’t let anything happen.”

“Can you not leave me?” Her voice was a raw plea, her grip tightening as if she feared he might disappear.

“I’m right here,” Connor reassured her. “What do you mean?”

Wren pulled back slightly, her tear-streaked face looking up at him with vulnerable eyes. “Can you stay with me always? I only feel safe when you are with me.”

A surge of happiness filled Connor’s heart. She wanted him fully, wanted him in every sense. “Sunshine, I’m all yours. I will be with you forever.”

Wren’s eyes softened, her tears now mingling with a smile. “Stay by my side…please don’t leave me by myself again.”

Connor’s heart ached at her words. “I didn’t leave you. You wanted to go to school.”

Wren shook her head, a touch of remorse in her eyes. “I’ll stay home and finish. I should have listened to you.”

Connor cupped her face gently. “You wouldn’t have known unless you tried.”

Just then, the door creaked open and Stormi and Riley entered the room. Stormi cleared her throat awkwardly. “Umm…sorry to interrupt.”

Riley offered a sympathetic smile. “We just wanted to make sure you’re okay.”

Wren slowly released her hold on Connor but kept a firm grip on his hand. “I’m okay now. Sorry to scare everyone.”

Stormi approached, concern etched in her features. “Do you have panic attacks all the time?”

Wren shook her head, her eyes reflecting a mix of embarrassment and relief. “No.”

Riley leaned in, offering a reassuring wink. “The doctor said you were triggered.”

Wren nodded, her gaze dropping to her lap. “I thought those girls were talking about me and Trevor.”

Stormi shook her head firmly. “They wouldn’t know. No one knows but us.”

Riley’s eyes twinkled with a hint of mischief. “Stormi and I can keep a secret.”

Wren managed a small, grateful smile. “I know. I guess I was just paranoid.”

Connor squeezed her hand gently. “It’s okay.”

The group chatted for a while, their conversation a comforting balm as Wren began to regain her composure. When it was time for her to leave, they bid farewell to Stormi and Riley, their presence a steadying force in the midst of chaos.

Connor guided Wren out of the infirmary, his arm securely around her. As they stepped out into the cool evening air, he knew one thing for certain: no matter what, he would never let her face her fears alone again.
