Two days later, the morning sun bathed the driveway in golden light as Wren and Connor prepared for their getaway. Connor’s excitement was palpable, his energy infectious as he directed Wren with a playful urgency.

“Hurry and get in the car,” he called, struggling to keep the enthusiasm out of his voice.

Wren, balancing a suitcase, shot him a teasing smile. “I’m going, Mr. Impatient.”

Connor chuckled, his eyes twinkling with amusement. “Hey, don’t call me names.”

“Why not? It’s the truth,” Wren teased, her smile widening.

Connor laughed heartily. “Alright, I guess I deserved that.”

With the last of the bags stowed in the trunk, they slid into the car, and Connor took the wheel. As he started the engine, the vehicle hummed to life, ready for their adventure.

Wren, peering out the window, noticed the scenery changing. The road began to line with tall, graceful palm trees, and the air seemed to carry a hint of the ocean. She rolled down her window, letting the fresh, salty breeze dance across her fingers.

Connor glanced over, his heart swelling at the sight of Wren’s radiant smile. Her joy was palpable, and he longed to capture and cherish every moment of it. “Do you like it?” he asked, his voice soft with affection.

“Yes,” Wren replied, her eyes sparkling with wonder. “It’s gorgeous here.”

Connor grinned. “Wait till you see the resort.”

As they continued driving, Wren’s excitement was momentarily overshadowed by a sudden wave of unease. The beauty of the beachside scenery stirred an old memory, the one of a trip with Trevor—the trip where everything changed for her. She felt a shudder run through her, and her breathing grew erratic.

“Connor,” Wren’s voice trembled, “Connor!”

Connor’s smile faded instantly as he noticed her distress. He pulled the car over with a sense of urgency, the tires crunching on the gravel as he quickly turned to her. He pulled Wren into his arms, his hand moving gently in circles on her back. “Shh…Sunshine, everything is okay. Can you tell me what you were thinking about before this happened?”

Wren clung to him, tears spilling down her cheeks. “I thought about that jerk Trevor taking me on a trip. The one where he… where he first raped me.”

Connor’s heart sank, the realization hitting him with a painful force. “Oh, Sunshine…I forgot that he took you on a getaway when that happened. I didn’t mean to trigger you.”

Wren’s sobs began to quiet as she felt the comforting warmth of Connor’s embrace. “It’s not your fault. The doctor wanted us to do this.”

Connor’s voice was heavy with regret. “Still, I should have known better.”

Wren shook her head, her voice soothing. “I’ll be fine. Just give me a few minutes to get myself together.”

Connor fell silent, deep in thought. Wren could see the struggle in his eyes, the concern etched into his features. She felt a pang of sadness at his distress but also a profound sense of gratitude for his unwavering care.

“Sunshine,” Connor finally spoke, his voice steady but tender, “you are with me this time. Can you just know that I would never, ever do something to hurt you like he did?”

Wren looked into his eyes, her heart aching. “I know that.”

“You don’t have to fear me,” Connor continued. “I could never do something like what he did to hurt you.”

“I know you are not like him,” Wren replied, her voice soft yet firm. “It’s just hard to forget what happened. I can’t help but associate it together.”

Connor’s eyes were filled with a mixture of frustration and concern. “I understand. I just don’t want you to hate me.”

Wren’s heart ached at his words. Did he really think she would hate him? “How could I ever hate you?”

Connor’s gaze was filled with vulnerability. “I don’t know. I just worry sometimes that you might.”

Wren reached out, gently cupping his cheek. “Look at me.”

Connor’s eyes met hers, and she saw the sincerity in them. “You are so good to me. You pulled me out of the darkness. I could never hate you. Remember that always.”

Connor’s face lit up with a tender smile. “I will. I love you, Sunshine.”

Wren leaned in and kissed Connor gently on the cheek. His eyes widened in surprise. “You… You kissed me.”

Wren’s smile was playful. “Yes, I did. Don’t you like it?”

“Like it? I love it!!!!” Connor exclaimed, his joy evident.

Wren winked at him. “Good. If you’re a good boy, there might be more in your future.”

Connor’s grin widened. “I hope so. I’ll be very good then.”

They laughed together, the sound filling the car with a sense of shared happiness. The earlier tension dissipated, replaced by the warmth of their connection. With Wren’s panic subsided and Connor’s reassured heart, they continued their journey to the resort, ready to embrace the new experiences and memories that awaited them.
