Chapter 43 - The Depth of Healing

Wren sat across from Dr. Julia Smythe, her fingers trembling as she tried to steady her breathing. The room, despite its calming ambiance with soft light filtering through delicate curtains and serene zen-like decor, felt suffocating. Beside her, Connor’s presence was both a comfort and a source of anxiety; she didn’t want to break down in front of him, but she didn’t want him to leave either.

Dr. Smythe’s gaze was warm and understanding as she carefully observed Wren’s demeanor. "I see that you’ve experienced a rather dramatic event," she began, her tone gentle yet probing.

Wren’s voice barely rose above a whisper. "Yes."

The doctor leaned forward slightly, her eyes full of empathy. "I’m sure you felt betrayed, especially since he was someone close to you."

Wren’s breath hitched as memories of that night flooded her mind. "I never expected him to do something like that," she confessed, her voice breaking.

"How did it make you feel when he betrayed your trust?" Dr. Smythe asked, her voice a soothing balm against the raw edges of Wren’s pain.

"It scared me," Wren admitted, her eyes avoiding both Connor and the doctor. "It makes me scared to ever trust anyone again."

Dr. Smythe nodded, her expression one of understanding. "I see you have this man beside you, though," she said, gesturing towards Connor.

Wren glanced at him, her eyes filled with uncertainty. "Umm…he seems to be an exception."

"How so?" the doctor asked, curious.

"I don’t know how to explain it," Wren replied, her voice trembling with vulnerability.

Dr. Smythe leaned in slightly, her tone encouraging. "Can you try?"

Wren took a deep breath, searching for the right words. "He saved me when I was at my worst, and even though I keep pushing him away, he always comes right back."

Dr. Smythe turned to Connor, who had been silently supporting Wren throughout the conversation. "Connor, is this true?"

"Yes," Connor said, his voice steady and full of conviction. "Because I love her with all my heart."

The simplicity and sincerity of his words hung in the air, and Wren’s heart twisted with conflicting emotions. She looked down, unable to meet his gaze. "I don’t deserve his love," she murmured.

Dr. Smythe’s expression softened as she studied Wren. "Why do you think that?"

Wren’s voice was barely audible, thick with self-loathing. "A broken and used person like me should be thrown away…not cherished."

Connor’s hand tightened around hers. "Don’t talk like that," he pleaded, his voice thick with emotion.

"It’s normal for her to feel that way, Connor," Dr. Smythe explained softly. "Most women who go through her experience lose their self-worth."

Connor nodded, his eyes never leaving Wren’s face. "I tell her she’s my sunshine. She brings light into my life."

Dr. Smythe smiled, a small, approving nod acknowledging his efforts. "That’s good. Keep encouraging her. She needs those kind words to overshadow the hurt and pain she’s suffered."

Wren sat quietly, lost in her thoughts. Dr. Smythe watched her carefully, then spoke again. "Wren, every person is worthy of love."

Wren’s voice was hollow as she responded. "I am not."

"Yes, you are," Dr. Smythe insisted gently. "You’ve just experienced something that wasn’t your fault."

"It was my fault!" Wren’s voice cracked, the pain in her words cutting through the air.

Dr. Smythe remained calm, her tone soothing. "How so?"
