Chapter 84 - The Party Surprise

Last Updated on 2024-10-10 20:04:24

The weekend sun was setting, casting a golden glow over Wren’s house as she and Connor put the final touches on the birthday party preparations. The house was filled with the faint scent of freshly baked goodies, and colorful streamers hung from the ceiling, adding a festive air to the space.

Wren, her fingers deftly arranging platters of food on the table, glanced at Connor, who was adjusting a strand of fairy lights. “Did you finish decorating?” she asked, her voice tinged with anxiety.

Connor gave her a reassuring nod. “Yes, it’s all done.”

Wren sighed, her nerves palpable as she added the finishing touches to the spread. “Okay, I just need to put the food on the table.”

Connor placed a calming hand on her shoulder. “Relax. This is your party, and you’re doing most of the work.”

Wren shot him a worried look. “I can’t help it. I’m so nervous.”

“It will be fine,” Connor said, his tone steady. “Do you think they will realize we planned this get-together for them?”

Wren’s face scrunched up in a frown. “Not if you don’t act suspicious. Do you think they will be mad if they find out?”

Connor chuckled. “You’re doing a good deed, not lying.”

“I just want to push them in the right direction to share their feelings,” Wren explained, her voice soft but determined.

Connor smiled sympathetically. “I know. It will be fine. Quit worrying.”

Just as Wren was about to respond, the doorbell rang, causing her to stiffen. She exchanged a nervous glance with Connor, who offered a reassuring smile.

“It will be fine. Just act natural,” Connor advised.

Wren took a deep breath, adjusting her dress in the mirror before hurrying to open the door with Connor by her side.

Stormi stood on the doorstep, a bright smile lighting up her face as she held a gift in her hands. “Hey there, birthday girl!” she exclaimed, stepping inside and enveloping Wren in a warm hug.

Wren returned the hug, feeling a bit of her anxiety melt away. “Thanks for coming.”

Stormi pulled back slightly, her eyes sparkling with excitement. “Of course I would come.”

Wren reached out, gently tugging Stormi’s hand. “Come sit down with me and talk.”

Connor, sensing the need for a bit of space, chimed in as he headed towards the kitchen. “I have to grab something in the kitchen. You girls go ahead and talk.”

“Hey Connor,” Stormi said with a wave.

“Hi, make yourself comfortable,” Connor responded with a friendly smile before disappearing into the kitchen.

Wren led Stormi to the living room, where they settled onto a plush couch. The room was adorned with soft lighting, and the warmth of the space contrasted with the cool evening breeze that wafted through the open window.

“So, who else are we waiting for?” Stormi asked, glancing around.

Wren sighed, a touch of regret in her voice. “Riley can’t make it, so I guess just Rex.”

Stormi’s expression shifted to one of concern. “Is Riley not coming because of me?”

Wren shook her head quickly. “No, he had something to do, so we celebrated earlier this week together.”

Stormi’s shoulders relaxed slightly. “Oh. Well, I guess that’s alright.”

Wren placed a comforting hand on Stormi’s. “Cheer up…it’s fine.”

Stormi forced a small smile. “I guess, but wait—did you say Rex is coming?”

“Yeah, Connor invited him,” Wren confirmed.

Before Stormi could respond, the doorbell rang again, prompting Connor to rush to answer it. The sound of the door opening and a cheerful greeting indicated that Rex had arrived.

Connor ushered Rex inside with a broad grin. “Hey, Rex! Glad you could make it.”

“Hey, Connor. Happy birthday, Wren!” Rex said as he stepped into the room, his eyes scanning the vibrant decorations.

“Thanks, Rex!” Wren replied, her spirits lifting as she welcomed him.

As the guests mingled and settled into the party atmosphere, the room filled with laughter and chatter. Connor returned with drinks and joined the group, and the evening began to unfold with a sense of casual joy.

The conversation flowed easily, and Wren found herself relaxing as she watched her friends interact. Despite the initial tension, the party was shaping up to be a success. The playful banter between Stormi and Rex lightened the mood, and Connor’s effortless hospitality made everyone feel at ease.

As the evening progressed, Wren and her friends gathered around the table, sharing stories and enjoying the food. The lighthearted atmosphere was a welcome distraction from the underlying tension Wren had been worried about.

Rex, catching Wren’s eye, raised his glass in a toast. “To Wren—happy birthday! Here’s to many more years of friendship and great times!”

Wren smiled warmly, touched by the sentiment. “Thank you, Rex. And to all of you for making this day special.”

The group clinked their glasses, and the conversation continued, each moment adding to the tapestry of memories that made the evening memorable.

As the night wore on and the party wound down, Wren felt a sense of contentment. The surprise she and Connor had planned to bring Stormi and Riley closer together had not gone unnoticed. Though the night was far from perfect, it had been filled with genuine connections and heartfelt moments.
