Chapter 29 - Sigh of Relief

Last Updated on 2024-10-10 19:28:23

The courtroom's heavy atmosphere lifted when the judge delivered the verdict. Trevor was found guilty and sentenced to ten years in prison for attempted rape and stalking. The weight of the moment seemed to settle into the spaces between Wren and Connor as they left the courthouse.

Back at Connor’s home, the routine was comforting. Connor was in the kitchen, preparing a meal with care, while Wren had retreated to change into something more relaxed. The hours of tension and the long day had left them both in need of solace.

Wren emerged from the bedroom in a pair of shorts and a form-fitting tee. Connor’s heart skipped a beat as he caught sight of her. She looked effortlessly beautiful, her presence both calming and invigorating. The sight of her made him ache with a deep, earnest desire to see her happy again.

“Come sit down and eat,” Connor said, his voice warm and inviting. “I made your favorites.”

Wren hesitated. “You didn’t have to.”

“I wanted to,” Connor insisted. “Come eat.”

Wren’s smile was small but genuine. “Thank you. It smells really good.”

As she sat at the table, Connor noticed the lingering tension in her shoulders. The day had been a rollercoaster of emotions, and even though the verdict was a relief, it was clear that Wren was still processing it all.

“You can relax now,” Connor said softly. “It’s all over, and you’re safe.”

Wren let out a long, relieved sigh. “I know.”

Connor leaned against the counter, watching her with concern. “What are your plans now?”

Wren shrugged slightly, her gaze drifting to the food. “I’m not sure. Maybe go back to classes.”

“You don’t have to force yourself if you’re not ready,” Connor said gently.

Wren nodded, taking in his words. “I want to get back to normal life.”

“Well, that’s a good thing,” Connor agreed, offering her an encouraging smile.

Wren hesitated before adding, “I think I can move back in with Stormi, too.”

Connor’s face fell. “Why?”

Wren looked at him, her voice laced with guilt. “I’ve stayed and inconvenienced you too long here.”

Connor pouted, a rare sight that surprised Wren. His eyes were wide, and his lips formed a cute, sad expression. “That makes me sad.”

Wren was taken aback by his reaction. She had never seen him like this before—vulnerable and earnest. Over the past week, Connor had become a steady presence in her life, and she realized she didn’t want to hurt him.

“Don’t pout,” she said softly. “Why are you sad?”

“I don’t want you to leave me,” Connor admitted, his voice a mix of longing and earnestness.

Wren’s silence was filled with unspoken emotions. She hadn’t anticipated this plea, and it left her grappling with her own feelings.

Connor took her hands in his, his expression still hopeful. “Please…Sunshine, stay with me. I promise I’ll give you space… just don’t leave me.”

Wren looked at him, her heart warming at his earnest request. The sight of him—so open and vulnerable—was more touching than she had expected.

“I can’t believe you,” she said, her lips twitching into a smile. She began to laugh lightly, the sound like a melody to Connor’s ears.

“You’re so childish right now,” she said, amusement coloring her voice.

Connor’s pout deepened, but his eyes sparkled with hope. “I don’t care. I can be more childish if it means you’ll stay.”

Wren’s laughter continued, and she patted his hand in comfort. “Alright… stop pouting. I’ll stay with you.”

Connor’s face lit up with joy. “I’m so happy right now. Can I hug you?”

Asking for permission had become a gentle routine for Connor, a sign of his respect for her boundaries. Wren had grown accustomed to touching his hands, but the prospect of hugging still made her nervous.

Wren looked at his hopeful face and nodded. “Yes.”

Connor wrapped his arms around her slowly, the hug gentle and tentative. Wren’s initial tension eased as she felt the warmth of his embrace. For the first time, she didn’t recoil from the contact. Instead, she found herself enveloped in a feeling of comfort and safety.

Inside, Wren marveled at the rapid beating of her heart, the warmth spreading through her as she rested against him. She felt neither fear nor discomfort—only a profound sense of happiness and peace that she hadn’t felt in a long time.

Why is my heart beating so fast when he hugs me? she wondered. I don’t feel scared. I feel warmth and happy… I think that’s what I feel.

In that moment, as Connor held her close, Wren allowed herself to embrace the sense of security he offered. The weight of the past seemed to lift, if only slightly, replaced by the comforting presence of someone who truly cared.
