Chapter 82 - Unspoken Truths

Wren sank into the plush cushions of her living room sofa, the warmth of the day still lingering in the air. The evening sun cast long shadows across the room, giving everything a golden hue. After spending the afternoon with Connor, her mind was still buzzing with thoughts of their conversation about Stormi and Rex, but there was something else gnawing at her—a concern she couldn’t quite shake off. She picked up her phone, scrolling through her contacts until she found Riley’s name. With a deep breath, she pressed the call button.

Riley answered after the first ring, his voice subdued. “Hello?”

“Hey,” Wren greeted, trying to sound casual, but there was a softness in her tone. “Are you feeling okay?”

“I’m okay,” Riley replied, his voice lacking its usual warmth.

Wren frowned, sensing the undercurrent of emotions he was trying to hide. “You didn’t seem so good earlier at school.”

“It’s nothing,” Riley said quickly, dismissing her concern.

Wren hesitated, unsure if she should push further. She knew Riley well enough to recognize when something was bothering him. “Are you mad at Stormi?”

There was a pause, and for a moment, Wren thought Riley might actually open up to her. But then, he simply said, “No, it’s fine.”

His response was curt, almost mechanical, and Wren felt a pang of frustration. She wanted to help, but it was clear he wasn’t ready to talk. “Alright,” she said softly. “I won’t ask anymore.”

Riley seemed to relax a little at that. “What’s up with you?”

Wren decided to shift the conversation to something lighter, hoping to lift his spirits. “My birthday is coming up, and I wanted to know if you wanted to hang out with me.”

Riley’s tone brightened at that. “Yeah, sounds good. What do you want to do?”

Wren smiled, glad to hear the enthusiasm returning to his voice. “How about food and bowling?”

“Sounds good,” Riley agreed. “Just the two of us?”

“Yeah, is that okay?” Wren asked, biting her lip. She knew how close Riley was to his brother, and she didn’t want to make things awkward.

“I’m cool as long as my brother doesn’t get jealous,” Riley teased, his mood clearly improving.

Wren laughed, glancing over at Connor, who was sitting nearby, scrolling through his phone. “He’ll be fine,” she said confidently.

But Connor, ever attuned to Wren’s conversations, looked up with a curious expression. “Be okay with what?”

Wren grinned, cupping the phone with her hand as she answered him. “Riley and I are grabbing food and bowling for my birthday. Is that okay?”

Connor shrugged, flashing her a smile. “It’s alright. Have fun.”

Wren returned his smile, but before she could say anything, Riley’s voice came through the phone, sounding incredulous. “Did I just hear correctly?”

Wren giggled. “Yeah, he said okay.”

There was a moment of silence on the other end, then Riley’s voice came back, dripping with mock astonishment. “Did hell freeze over? That jealous man is okay with you going without him?”

Connor, overhearing the comment, leaned closer to Wren and called out loud enough for Riley to hear. “You’re her future brother-in-law. Why should I worry?”

Riley chuckled, the sound filled with amusement. “True… there’s nothing to worry about.”

Wren rolled her eyes, a playful groan escaping her lips. “Ughh… you two are so stupid.”

“Hey… is that how you talk to your friend?” Riley shot back, feigning hurt. “No gift for you!”

Wren’s playful retort came without missing a beat. “Okay… okay… I’m sorry. Please forgive me.”

Riley laughed, his earlier gloominess now completely gone. “Alright, I forgive you.”

Wren leaned back against the sofa, a sense of relief washing over her. She was glad to hear him laughing again. “Let’s go tomorrow.”

“Okay,” Riley agreed. “We can go after classes.”

“Sounds good. See you tomorrow then. Bye.”

“Bye, Wren.”

As the call ended, Wren put down her phone and glanced at Connor, who was watching her with a curious smile. “You’ve got him wrapped around your finger,” Connor teased, but there was an affectionate glint in his eyes.

Wren shrugged, a playful grin on her lips. “I guess I’m just that charming.”

Connor chuckled and stood up, walking over to sit beside her. “Are you sure it’s a good idea, though? Hanging out with Riley alone… after everything?”

Wren sighed, her smile fading slightly. “I think he needs it, Connor. He’s going through something, and he won’t talk about it. Maybe a little distraction will help.”

Connor nodded, understanding her intentions. “Just be careful, okay? He’s not in a great place right now.”

Wren leaned her head on his shoulder, appreciating his concern. “I will. Thanks.”

As they sat together in comfortable silence, Wren couldn’t shake the feeling that tomorrow’s outing with Riley might be more significant than she anticipated. There were unspoken truths hanging between them—truths that might finally come to light. And as much as she wanted to help, she knew that some things could only be resolved by the person going through them. All she could do was be there, ready to listen when Riley was finally ready to talk.
