Chapter 95 - A Year of Waiting

Last Updated on 2024-10-10 23:17:12

A year had passed, but time felt frozen in the sterile stillness of the hospital room. The rhythmic beeping of the machines, the steady rise and fall of Rex’s chest—these were the only signs that life still lingered in his motionless body. Beside him, Stormi sat, her face etched with the weariness of endless days and sleepless nights. Her love for Rex had kept her rooted to this spot, where she had spent countless hours, hoping against hope that today might be the day he would finally wake.

As she wiped Rex’s arms and hands with a wet towel, her voice trembled with the weight of her sorrow. “It’s been a year now since you left me on my own,” she whispered, her words barely audible in the quiet room. “I’m still waiting for you to wake up.”

Her heart ached with the longing for a reality that seemed forever out of reach. “I wish this was all a dream,” she murmured, her tears threatening to fall again. “What is making you not come back to me? Can you even hear me right now?”

She paused, her hand lingering on Rex’s arm, searching for any sign, any flicker of recognition. “I feel like I’m losing my mind,” she confessed, her voice breaking under the weight of her despair.

When she finished wiping him down, Stormi sat beside Rex, her quiet sobs filling the room. The strength that had kept her going for so long felt like it was slipping away, leaving her raw and vulnerable.

Wren entered the room silently, her heart heavy as she saw Stormi’s pain. She gently placed a hand on Stormi’s shoulder, offering what little comfort she could. “Storm, it will be okay. Please don’t cry.”

“I’m trying,” Stormi replied, her voice thick with tears. “Wren, it’s been a year.”

“I know, sweetie,” Wren said softly, her own heart aching for her friend.

“He isn’t waking up, is he?” Stormi’s voice was barely a whisper, the fear she had tried so hard to keep at bay now spoken aloud.

“Don’t say that,” Wren urged, squeezing Stormi’s shoulder. “Stay positive.”

“I’m trying,” Stormi repeated, but the words felt hollow. “It breaks my heart seeing him like this. Why won’t he wake up? He has healed since the surgery.”

“I don’t know, sweetie,” Wren admitted, her own uncertainty gnawing at her. “Just keep staying hopeful.”

Stormi nodded, though hope was becoming harder to cling to. “I’m trying,” she said again, her voice fading into the quiet of the room.

Meanwhile, Somewhere Else

Rex floated in a world that was both familiar and foreign, a dreamscape that held him captive. It was as though he was tethered to his own consciousness, aware of the world outside but unable to break free from the fog that enveloped him.

“Why can’t I get out of here?” he shouted into the void, his voice echoing back to him. Frustration surged within him, an urgent need to escape this prison of his mind. “I don’t want to be here anymore. Please, let me out!”

Rex could hear everything happening in the real world—the sound of Stormi’s voice, the sadness in her words. It cut through him like a knife. “Stormi is crying again,” he said, his heart twisting with the knowledge. “I want to see her. I miss her so much.”

But no matter how hard he fought, he remained trapped. His attempts to wake up were met with resistance, as though an invisible force held him in place. He screamed in frustration, his voice full of desperation. “Please, let me out of here!”

He could feel the weight of the dream pressing down on him, a suffocating blanket that refused to lift. “Why can’t I wake up?” he demanded, though there was no answer, no solution in sight.

Yet even in his despair, Rex refused to give up. His love for Stormi, his need to be with her, was stronger than any force holding him back. “I refuse to give up like this,” he declared, his voice fierce with determination. “I have to wake up and see Stormi.”

With renewed resolve, Rex pushed against the boundaries of the dream, determined to break through. He would not let this be the end. He had to find his way back to the woman he loved, no matter how long it took.
