Chapter 48 - An Evening to Remember

Last Updated on 2024-10-10 19:37:57

The evening air was crisp as Connor and Wren walked hand in hand, the streetlights casting a warm glow on the quiet streets. Their stroll was marked by a comfortable silence, each lost in their own thoughts, until Connor noticed Wren’s gaze lingering on a roadside food cart.

“Are you hungry?” Connor asked, his voice breaking the quiet.

Wren glanced at him, her eyes bright. “Yes. I skipped lunch today.”

Connor frowned, a note of concern in his voice. “Why? You know you have to eat.”

Wren shrugged slightly. “I just wasn’t hungry.”

Without further discussion, Connor tugged gently on her hand, guiding her across the street toward the food cart. “Come on and pick out what you want. My treat.”

At the cart, Wren perused the menu and decided on a chicken salad with a side of French fries. Connor opted for a cheeseburger and fries. They waited for their food to be cooked, their hands still clasped together as they found a nearby bench to sit on.

As they settled down, Connor glanced at Wren’s hand still nestled in his. He couldn’t help but smile, feeling a surge of warmth from their simple connection.

“Are you having fun on our walk?” he asked, his tone soft and genuine.

“Yes,” Wren replied with a smile. “The cherry blossoms are starting to bloom and they’re so beautiful.”

Connor’s gaze lingered on her, his smile widening. “Not as beautiful as you.”

Wren blushed at his compliment, her cheeks tinged with a rosy hue. “What nonsense are you saying?”

“It’s true,” Connor said, his eyes earnest. “I’ve always thought you were pretty.”

Wren’s eyes widened in surprise. “Really?”

“Yes, really. Can’t you tell?”

Wren shook her head, a bit flustered. “Well, I never really thought about it. I just figured you liked me a little bit.”

Connor’s expression grew serious. “A little bit! Are you serious? I don’t just like you… I love you!”

Wren’s eyes widened in embarrassment. “Shh… be quiet. People will stare.”

Connor’s voice grew more fervent. “I don’t care. I want the whole world to know you are mine.”

Wren glanced around, noticing a few curious glances from passersby. “Oh my God! Alright, quiet down. I believe you. People are starting to stare.”

Connor grinned, unfazed. “So what? Let them stare and see my gorgeous girlfriend that I love.”

Wren shook her head, laughing despite herself. “What am I going to do with you?”

Connor laughed along, his joy evident. “Love me back just as much.”

Wren stared at him for a moment, her heart racing with conflicting emotions. Could I really be this lucky? Is it okay for me to love again? I’m not really sure, but I can tell he is sincere.

Taking a deep breath, Wren finally spoke, her voice barely above a whisper. “Okay… okay… I see you love me.” She turned her head slightly, her cheeks flushing. “I like you too.”

Connor’s face lit up with an ecstatic smile. “What did you just say?”

Wren turned away, embarrassed. “Nothing.”

“Tell me again,” Connor insisted, his eyes wide with anticipation.

Wren took a deep breath and said softly, “I said I like you too.”

Connor’s smile widened to a grin that could light up the night. “I’m so happy right now. This has been the best day. Can I hug you?”

Before Wren could fully react, Connor wrapped his arms around her in a spontaneous embrace. Wren tensed up, caught off guard by his sudden affection.

“Connor… Connor…” she murmured, trying to ease out of the hug.

Realizing his mistake, Connor quickly released her, his face turning crimson with apology. “I’m so sorry. I was just so happy. Please don’t be upset. Are you okay?”

To his surprise, Wren burst into laughter, her eyes sparkling with amusement. “It’s okay. I’m fine. Calm down.”

Connor’s relief was palpable as he joined in her laughter. “Are you sure?”

“Yes, I’m not mad,” Wren assured him, still chuckling.

They shared a moment of light-hearted laughter before their food arrived. As they ate, the night unfolded like a perfect dream, their earlier laughter and shared warmth making the meal even more enjoyable. Walking home hand in hand, they savored the simple joy of each other’s company, their connection deepening with every step.

The evening was a testament to their growing bond—a night where love, laughter, and the promise of new beginnings intertwined seamlessly under the starlit sky.
