Chapter 92 - Shattered Moments

Last Updated on 2024-10-10 23:15:30

The sun hung low in the sky, casting a golden hue over the bustling college campus as Wren, Stormi, and Riley made their way through the crowd. Laughter and excited chatter filled the air, a stark contrast to the tension simmering within Stormi.

“Stormi, are you okay?” Wren asked, her voice laced with concern.

Stormi’s eyes flitted anxiously over the sea of faces. “Rex still isn’t here.”

Conner, who had been by her side, added, “That’s not like him. He was so excited to see you graduate.”

Tears welled in Stormi’s eyes. “I have a bad feeling.”

Wren’s hand rested comfortingly on Stormi’s back. “It’s okay. He’ll be fine.”

Conner dialed Rex’s number again, but only silence greeted him. “He isn’t answering.”

Stormi’s voice trembled. “I already tried to call him. The same thing happened.”

“Let’s go now,” Conner suggested. “We’ll try calling again on the way to Wren’s parents’ house for the party.”

Stormi shook her head. “I have to find him.”

Wren’s voice was soothing yet firm. “We will find him. Don’t worry.”

With Wren’s help, Stormi settled into the car. Conner and Riley joined them, their faces a mix of worry and determination. The drive was tense, each minute feeling like an eternity.

As they navigated through the streets, something caught their collective attention. The sight of strewn flowers, shattered glass, and twisted metal made Stormi’s heart drop.

“Wren… no… it can’t be…” Stormi’s voice was barely a whisper as she recognized the mangled Jeep.

Wren’s eyes widened in horror. “Conner, that’s Rex’s Jeep!”

Conner acted swiftly, pulling over to a scene swarmed with police and paramedics. “Stay here,” he instructed. “Riley and I will find out what happened.”

Stormi’s world crumbled as she slumped into Wren’s arms in the backseat, tears streaming down her face. “He won’t be dead… right?”

Wren’s voice was steady, though she too was shaken. “I’m sure he’ll be okay. The accident just looks bad.”

Minutes dragged on, stretching into what felt like hours. Conner and Riley finally returned, their expressions grim.

“Is it really Rex?” Wren asked urgently. “Is he okay?”

Conner’s face was etched with worry. “It looks bad. We need to get to the hospital. They’re taking him there now.”

Stormi’s panic flared. “How bad?”

Riley, trying to offer a semblance of comfort, replied, “We aren’t sure.”

“We won’t know until we get there,” Conner added.

The drive to the hospital was a blur of anxiety and hope. As soon as the car stopped, Stormi leaped out and dashed into the hospital’s emergency entrance.

“Stormi, wait!” Wren called, but Stormi was already out of earshot.

Riley followed closely, his determination evident as he chased after Stormi. “I’ll catch her. You two park the car and come quickly.”

Inside the hospital, Stormi frantically searched for someone who could offer answers. “Excuse me… There was a man brought in an ambulance from a car accident. Can you tell me where he is?”

The doctor looked up from a clipboard, his expression sympathetic. “Miss, let me check for you.”

Time seemed to stretch endlessly as Stormi waited, her tears unabated. Finally, the doctor returned.

“Miss, you can follow me this way. He is being taken care of and was rushed into immediate surgery.”

Stormi’s heart pounded. “Will he be okay? How bad was he?”

The doctor’s face was somber. “I’m not sure, but the attending physician will let you know soon.”

Stormi’s shoulders slumped as she accepted a tissue from the doctor. “I hope you’re right.”

Riley arrived just in time to catch Stormi as she collapsed into his arms, overwhelmed by the gravity of the situation.

“Someone please help me!” Riley’s voice cracked as he called for assistance.

A nurse quickly intervened, guiding Riley and Stormi to a nearby room. Stormi was placed on a bed, and the nurse began to check her vitals. Moments later, a doctor entered to examine her.

Riley, his voice filled with concern, asked, “Is she okay?”

The doctor reassured him. “She just fainted from shock. She needs to rest a bit, and she’ll be fine. Don’t worry.”

“Thank you, doctor,” Riley said, trying to stay calm.

As the doctor left, Riley’s phone rang.

“Hello?” Riley answered.

“It’s Wren,” came the voice on the other end. “Where are you guys?”

“Room 210,” Riley replied. “Hurry.”

“Okay, we’ll be there soon,” Wren said, her voice filled with urgency.

Riley hung up, his gaze fixed on Stormi, who lay still on the bed, her breathing gradually returning to normal. The waiting room was a cocoon of tension as they awaited further news, the promise of a hopeful outcome hanging in the balance.
