Chapter 42 - A Safe Space

Wren found herself sitting in a room that radiated calm, its soft lighting and soothing colors creating a sense of peace she hadn't felt in days. The walls were adorned with zen-like decorations—simple, yet elegant. A small fountain in the corner trickled quietly, and the scent of lavender lingered in the air. It was the kind of room that made you want to take a deep breath and let go of all your worries.

She glanced at Connor, who was sitting beside her, his hand resting on the arm of the chair. He seemed more relaxed than she felt, but then again, Connor was always good at hiding his emotions when he needed to.

"This room is peaceful," Connor remarked, his voice low and reassuring.

"Yeah," Wren agreed, her voice barely above a whisper. "I hope the doctor is nice."

"I was told she’s a really good therapist," Connor said, squeezing her hand gently. "She’s here to help you, Wren. Just remember that."

Before Wren could respond, the door opened, and a woman stepped into the room. She appeared to be in her late thirties, with dark hair neatly braided and a professional, yet approachable, demeanor. There was something warm and inviting about her smile that immediately put Wren at ease.

"Hello there," the woman said, her voice kind and melodic. "You must be Wren."

Wren smiled back, feeling a small sense of comfort seep into her tense body. "Yes, that’s me. And this is my boyfriend, Connor."

"Hello," Connor greeted, standing up briefly to shake the woman’s hand.

"Hello, Connor. I’m Dr. Julia Smythe, but you can just call me Julia," she said, returning his handshake with a firm but gentle grip.

"Nice to meet you, Julia," Wren said, the anxiety in her chest loosening a bit.

"It’s a pleasure to meet you both," Julia replied, her eyes warm and compassionate. "I’ve looked over some of the notes that were sent to me from the hospital, and I think I have an idea of where we can start."

Julia handed Wren a few papers. "I need you to take this short survey and answer these questions. It will help me get a better understanding of your thoughts and feelings."

"Okay," Wren said, taking the papers from her. She glanced at Connor, who gave her an encouraging nod before turning to make small talk with Julia.

As Wren filled out the questions, she couldn’t help but listen to their conversation. Connor was asking Julia about her experience as a therapist, her approach to treatment, and how long she’d been practicing. Julia answered each question with patience and sincerity, her voice steady and comforting. It was clear that she was someone who cared deeply about her work and the people she helped.

After a few minutes, Wren finished filling out the survey and handed the papers back to Julia. "I think I’m all done."

"Great," Julia said, taking the papers from her. "Let me just take a quick look, and then we can get started."

Wren nodded, her nervousness creeping back in. "Is it okay if Connor stays?"

"Of course," Julia said without hesitation. "I want you to be comfortable, and if having Connor here helps, he’s welcome to join you during all your visits."

"Thank you," Wren said, feeling a bit more at ease.

Julia reviewed the survey, her eyes moving quickly over the pages. When she was done, she set the papers aside and turned her full attention to Wren and Connor.

"Alright," she said, her tone gentle but purposeful. "I think we can begin now."

Wren swallowed hard, her nerves flaring up again. "Okay."

Julia must have noticed her anxiety because she smiled reassuringly and said, "There’s no need to be anxious, Wren. This is a safe space for you. I want you to know that I will never judge you, and everything you say here stays in this room. You are safe to tell me anything."

Wren took a deep breath, trying to let Julia’s words sink in. "Alright," she said, her voice still shaky, but with a hint of determination.

Julia nodded, her expression kind and understanding. "Good. Now… let’s get started."
