Chapter 35 - Shadows of the Past

The morning dawned quietly, a stark contrast to the turbulence of the previous night. Wren and Connor shared a simple breakfast, the tension of unspoken thoughts lingering between them. Connor decided to work from home, setting up in his makeshift office, while Wren settled at the kitchen table with her laptop, trying to focus on her schoolwork.

The hours passed in a peaceful silence, interrupted only by the clinking of dishes as they finished lunch. Wren gathered the plates, determined to clear her mind through the familiar routine of cleaning. As she washed the last dish, her phone buzzed with a new message. She paused, deciding to check it after she finished tidying up.

Connor had already returned to his work, his office door closed behind him. Alone in the kitchen, Wren finally reached for her phone.

I wonder who messaged me, she thought, her mind drifting to her friend. Maybe it’s Stormi.

But as she opened the message, her heart sank, the blood draining from her face.

The words on the screen stared back at her, sharp and venomous.

Random Girl: Hey there bxxxx! You took my Trevor away, and now you will pay!

Wren’s breath caught in her throat, her vision blurring as tears welled up in her eyes. Her hand trembled, but she forced herself to keep reading, each word like a knife to her heart.

Random Girl: Here are some lovely pics. I’m sure you don’t want these getting around. I hear you’re rich…so pay up, or the whole school will know what a slut you are.

She scrolled down, and her world shattered. The images—horrifying, invasive—flashed before her eyes. They were of her and Trevor, from that night, the night he had violated her in ways she could never forget.

Her body went numb, her mind reeling as she struggled to process what she was seeing.

Random Girl: I’ll give you 24 hours to respond. I want 1 million, and it needs to be wired to my account by tomorrow at midnight. Bye bxxxx!

The phone slipped from her hand, clattering to the floor. Her legs gave way beneath her, and she crumpled beside it, her body wracked with sobs. Panic surged through her, threatening to suffocate her.

“Connor!” she screamed, her voice hoarse and filled with desperation.

Connor’s heart leaped into his throat at the sound of her cry. He dropped his phone mid-conversation with Rex and raced down the hallway, terror gripping him as he imagined what could have happened.

When he reached the kitchen, his worst fears seemed realized. Wren was curled up on the floor, her body shaking as she cried uncontrollably, her phone lying beside her. Connor rushed to her side, his heart pounding.

“Sunshine, what happened? Talk to me!” he urged, his voice filled with fear.

Wren could barely speak through her sobs. “The pho…pho…”

“The what?” Connor pressed, trying to understand.

Wren’s voice was broken, barely more than a whisper. “The pho…phone.”

Connor picked up her phone, his eyes narrowing as he unlocked the screen. The messages were still open. His heart froze as he read the words, and then the pictures appeared. The sight of Wren, vulnerable and tormented, assaulted his senses. Rage boiled up inside him, his hands shaking as he struggled to contain the fury that threatened to consume him.

“That sick bastard,” Connor growled, his voice low and dangerous. “Jail wasn’t enough for him. I should have killed him.”

Wren’s sobs grew more frantic, her words tumbling out in a rush of panic. “What am I going to do?”

Connor forced himself to stay calm, even as anger pulsed through his veins. “First, you need to calm down. We’ll figure this out, Sunshine. We’ll come up with a plan.”

Wren shook her head, her voice rising in hysteria. “What if everyone finds out? I will kill myself!”

Connor’s heart lurched at her words. “Don’t talk like that!” he snapped, his voice sharper than he intended.

But Wren was lost in her terror, her mind spiraling with the thought of everyone knowing what had happened to her. “I will. I can’t live with the whole world knowing what he did to me.”

“No one will know,” Connor said firmly, trying to reach her through the fog of fear. “Stop saying that. I’ll be angry at you.”

His words finally seemed to penetrate her panic, and Wren looked up at him, guilt flashing across her tear-streaked face. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it. I just—”

Connor’s expression softened, though the anger still simmered beneath the surface. “I know you’re upset and scared. But we’ll get through this.”

Wren’s voice was small and uncertain. “What can I do?”

“Rex can trace the messages,” Connor said, already formulating a plan in his mind. “Then we can find the girl and stop her.”

“Are you sure he can do it?” Wren asked, her voice trembling with hope.

“Yes, I’m sure,” Connor assured her, his confidence unwavering.

Wren nodded, trying to take comfort in his words. Connor reached down, gently pulling her to her feet. He took her hand in his, rubbing his thumb across her knuckles in a soothing rhythm.

“Stop crying, Sunshine,” he whispered, his voice tender as he wiped away her tears. “It’s going to be okay. I promise.”

Wren leaned into him, drawing strength from his presence. But even as she clung to Connor’s reassurances, the shadow of her past loomed large, a darkness she couldn’t escape.
