Connor shut the door behind Rex with a quiet click, the sound echoing through the cozy apartment. He turned, a warm smile already tugging at his lips as he walked back toward Wren, who stood uncertainly in the middle of the living room. Without a word, he wrapped his arm around her shoulders, the gesture instinctive, protective.

“Sit on the couch and wait for me,” he said softly, guiding her toward the plush cushions.

Wren hesitated, her brow furrowing slightly. “Why?”

Connor chuckled, a low sound that made her heart skip. “You’re probably hungry. I’m going to bring you something to eat.”

“You don’t have to trouble yourself,” she protested, though the warmth in her voice belied her words.

“No trouble,” he assured her, giving her a playful wink. “I’ll be back in a few seconds. You pick out a movie for us to watch.”

“Alright,” she murmured, sinking into the couch as he disappeared into the kitchen.

For a moment, Wren simply watched the space where Connor had been, the reality of the situation settling over her like a soft, warm blanket. She couldn’t believe she was here, in his apartment, wrapped in his care. Her mind buzzed with conflicting thoughts.

How did I manage to be saved by such a kind man? she wondered, her heart clenching. I feel like he is too good for me. I don’t deserve him.

Wren bit her lip, her gaze dropping to her lap. The thoughts that swirled in her mind were dark, heavy with doubt. Connor was everything she had ever wanted, but she was convinced he was too good to be true. Soon enough, he’d see through the façade she’d built, see how broken she truly was. And when that happened, he’d realize his mistake.

I have to leave before it’s too late, she resolved, her stomach twisting with the thought. After I recover and go back home, I’ll figure out a plan to leave far from here.

Before her thoughts could spiral further, Connor reappeared, a tray balanced expertly in his hands. He crossed the room in a few strides and set the tray on the coffee table, the smell of freshly cooked food filling the space.

“Here you go,” he said, handing her a plate. His smile was soft, sincere. “Specially made just for you.”

Wren couldn’t help but smile back, her heart warming despite the turmoil within. “Thank you.”

She took a bite, savoring the taste of the eggs, bacon, and toast. It wasn’t just the food that comforted her, but the thoughtfulness behind it. Every small gesture from Connor made her feel seen, cared for. It was a feeling she wasn’t used to, and it scared her as much as it soothed her.

“Did you find a movie?” Connor asked after a moment, settling beside her on the couch.

“No, I didn’t find anything yet,” Wren admitted, setting her plate down.

“What type do you like?”

“Anything is fine,” she replied, her voice barely above a whisper.

Connor’s eyes sparkled with mischief as he leaned over, grabbing the remote. “There’s a new one that’s supposed to be good.”

“Let’s watch that one then.”

He quickly found the rom-com he was referring to and started the movie. The room was filled with the soft glow of the television as the opening credits rolled. Connor stood up briefly, retrieving a blanket from a nearby chair. He draped it over Wren’s lap with a tenderness that made her chest tighten. Then he sat back down, wrapping his arm around her shoulder and gently pulling her against his side.

“That’s better,” he murmured, his voice low and content. “I like holding you close.”

Wren leaned into him, her heart pounding in her chest. The warmth of his body, the steady rise and fall of his breath, it all felt like a dream. So this is true happiness, she thought, her mind a whirl of conflicting emotions. It’s nice, but I don’t deserve this. Connor deserves someone pure and not broken.

Connor glanced down at her, his heart swelling with an emotion he had long kept hidden. She was here, in his arms, and he couldn’t believe his luck. After years of quiet longing, she was finally within reach.

I’ll never let you go now that I have you, he vowed silently, pulling her a little closer.

They spent the day together, lost in the comfort of each other’s presence. Laughter mingled with the sounds of the movie, and for a few precious hours, Wren allowed herself to forget the shadows that lurked in the corners of her mind. Connor’s warmth, his unwavering kindness, made her feel safe in a way she hadn’t felt in years.

But as the day gave way to night, and the weight of sleep tugged at her eyelids, Wren’s fears crept back in. Soon, she would have to leave this cocoon of safety, leave Connor and the happiness she knew she didn’t deserve. She just hoped she’d have the strength to do it when the time came.

Connor held her close as she drifted off to sleep, his fingers gently threading through her hair. He pressed a soft kiss to the top of her head, his heart full. He had never felt so happy, so at peace. With Wren in his arms, everything felt right.

As sleep claimed him, one thought lingered in his mind: I’ll protect her, no matter what. I won’t let her go.

But even as they lay together, wrapped in each other’s warmth, the unspoken fears and doubts lingered, casting long shadows over their fragile happiness. For now, they held on to each other, unaware of the challenges that awaited them, and the strength they would need to face them together.
