Chapter 5 - Under the Surface

The campus was bustling with the usual energy of students hurrying between classes, but Stormi's mind was preoccupied with Wren. As she approached the quad, she spotted Riley leaning against a bench, scrolling through his phone.

“Yo, Stormi!” Riley called out as she approached. “Where has Wren been? I haven’t seen her all week.”

Stormi forced a casual smile, though concern flickered in her eyes. “She hasn’t been feeling well and is at home.”

Riley’s brow furrowed. “Oh… well, should we maybe visit her after classes?”

Stormi hesitated, her fingers instinctively tightening around the strap of her bag. “Let me call her and see if it’s okay first.”

Riley’s expression turned puzzled. “Why? We never checked before. Let’s just go.”

Stormi's anxiety crept into her voice. “No, it’s not a good idea. Just listen to me.”

Riley’s gaze sharpened, concern deepening. “Did something happen that I don’t know about?”

Stormi’s nerves got the better of her, and she raised her voice slightly. “No.”

Riley’s eyes narrowed. “Are you sure? You don’t seem like you’re telling the truth.”

Stormi took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. “Everything is fine. Let me call her now.”

She pulled out her cell phone, her hands trembling slightly as she dialed Wren’s number. The call rang through, and after a moment, Wren’s weak voice answered.

“Hello.”

“Hi Wren… it’s me,” Stormi said softly, trying to keep her tone light.

“Hi Stormi.”

Stormi glanced at Riley, who was watching with a puzzled expression. “I ran into Riley, and I told him you were sick. He wants to stop by and check on you.”

Wren’s response was immediate and firm. “I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

Stormi’s heart sank, but she pressed on. “Maybe it would be good to have some company.”

“No, I just want to be by myself for a while,” Wren said, her voice barely above a whisper.

“Alright…” Stormi said quietly, her concern seeping through. “Don’t stay by yourself too long.”

“I won’t. Bye.”

“Bye.”

Stormi ended the call and turned to Riley, who was looking at her expectantly. “Well, I take it she said no.”

Riley sighed, his concern palpable. “She’s really okay, right?”

Stormi forced a reassuring smile. “Yeah, I promise. I’ve got to get to my next class.”

Riley gave her a worried look but nodded. “See you later.”

“Bye… talk later,” Stormi said, her voice trailing off as she watched Riley walk away.

As she headed to her next class, Stormi’s thoughts were consumed by the conversation she’d just had. Wren’s voice had sounded faint, almost distant, and Stormi couldn’t shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong. She resolved to check on her friend as soon as possible, even if it meant going against Wren’s wishes. Something was clearly hidden beneath the surface, and Stormi was determined to uncover it, no matter the cost.
