Chapter 30 - Everything Seems Peaceful

The days following Trevor’s conviction were marked by an unusual calm. Wren had moved in with Connor permanently, and their lives had settled into a comforting routine. She spent her days preparing meals, taking care of the house, and catching up on schoolwork that her friend Stormi had brought her. The familiarity of their daily patterns was both soothing and grounding.

As Wren stood in the kitchen, her thoughts drifted to the upcoming week. I hope I can be okay. I can’t disappoint Connor. He cares for me and has put so much effort into helping me. I have to get better, she mused.

With a determined nod, she focused on preparing lunch. The aroma of the food filled the kitchen as she chopped vegetables and stirred the pot. The sense of normalcy was a welcome change from the turmoil of the past months.

Once the meal was ready, Wren carefully carried it into Connor’s office. The room was filled with the soft hum of his computer and the occasional rustle of papers.

“Connor, food’s ready,” she announced.

Connor looked up from his work, his face lighting up with a smile. “Smells yummy.”

“I hope you like it,” Wren said, setting the plates down on his desk.

“I like anything you cook,” Connor replied, his eyes twinkling with warmth.

Wren chuckled. “Of course you do.”

Connor’s playful wink followed. “Anything made by you is delicious.”

Wren shook her head, laughing. “Quit with your sweet talk and just eat.”

“Come bring your food and eat with me,” Connor invited.

“Okay,” Wren agreed, grabbing her plate and settling down next to him.

As they began to eat, Connor leaned back, his gaze thoughtful. “Are you prepared for school next week?”

Wren nodded. “Yes, I think so.”

“Don’t be nervous,” Connor said reassuringly. “My schedule isn’t the same as yours, but Stormi and Riley will be there with you.”

“I know,” Wren replied, though a hint of tension crept into her voice. “It should be fine… now that Trevor isn’t around.”

“Don’t think about him anymore,” Connor said firmly. “He is in the past.”

Wren nodded, her shoulders relaxing slightly. “I won’t.”

Connor’s expression brightened as he shifted gears. “I juggled some things around, and I have good news.”

“What’s that?” Wren asked, her curiosity piqued.

“I can take you to school every day and pick you up on Fridays,” Connor said, his eyes sparkling with excitement.

Wren’s face lit up with genuine happiness. “Really?!”

Seeing her joy warmed Connor’s heart. He had grown fond of the way her smile could light up a room, and he cherished each moment of their evolving relationship.

“Does it make you that happy?” Connor asked, a playful note in his voice.

Wren turned a bit shy. “Umm… maybe.”

“Don’t be shy,” Connor said softly. “I like that you are happy.”

He stood up and walked over to her, his movements gentle. With a tender touch, he stroked her hair, his fingers lingering in a comforting caress.

“Stand up,” he said, his voice soft but insistent.

Wren looked up at him with a questioning expression. “Why?”

“Because I want you to… please,” Connor replied.

Wren complied, standing up slowly. Their faces were now inches apart, and she could feel the warmth of his breath against her skin. Her heart raced as she gazed into his deep brown eyes, feeling as though she could get lost in them forever.

“I’m standing. Now what?” Wren asked, her voice a soft whisper.

“Just bear with me,” Connor said, his tone gentle.

With that, Connor wrapped his arms around her, pulling her into a tender embrace. The contact was comforting, and Wren’s initial nervousness melted away as she settled into his hold.

“I just want you to know I love you so much,” Connor murmured into her hair. “I’m happy that you finally showed me that you want me around.”

Wren’s breath caught in her throat. “I thought you already knew that.”

“No, I didn’t,” Connor replied, his voice earnest. “But hearing it from you means the world to me.”

Wren closed her eyes, allowing herself to be enveloped in the warmth of Connor’s embrace. For the first time in a long while, she felt truly at peace. The world outside might have been chaotic, but within the sanctuary of Connor’s arms, everything seemed calm and serene.
