Chapter 94 - The Uncertain Wait

The corridor of the hospital seemed to stretch endlessly as Riley maneuvered the wheelchair, guiding Stormi toward Rex’s room. The fluorescent lights overhead cast a harsh, sterile glow, accentuating the gravity of their situation. When they finally reached the door, Stormi’s breath hitched, her eyes fixed on the sight beyond.

As Riley pushed the wheelchair through the door, Stormi’s gaze fell on Rex, lying motionless in the hospital bed. The sight overwhelmed her, and tears spilled uncontrollably down her cheeks.

“Oh my god…” Stormi’s voice was barely audible, choked by her sobs. “Is he okay?”

Conner stepped forward, his own face etched with worry. “Stormi, you have to stay calm.”

“I’m trying,” Stormi said between gasps, her voice trembling with fear.

Conner’s tone was gentle yet firm. “Rex’s surgery went well, but he’s in a coma right now. All we can do is pray and hope he wakes up.”

Stormi’s panic was palpable. “He will wake up, right?”

Conner shook his head slightly, his expression pained. “Honestly, we don’t know. All we can do is hope for the best right now.”

Stormi’s hands shook as she buried her face in them, her sobs muffled by her palms. “I can’t believe this is happening,” she cried.

“Push me over to him, Ry,” Stormi managed to say through her tears.

Riley complied, guiding the wheelchair closer to Rex’s bed. His heart ached as he watched Stormi reach out, her fingers trembling as she took hold of Rex’s hand. The warmth of his skin contrasted starkly with the coldness of the situation, but Rex remained lifeless.

“Baby, wake up for me,” Stormi pleaded, her voice breaking. “It’s me, Stormi. You have to wake up.”

She squeezed Rex’s fingers, but there was no response. Her tears fell freely as she clung to him, her hope struggling against the heavy weight of reality.

Wren arrived, her face a mirror of sorrow and determination. The sight of Rex in such a state was almost too much to bear. “Storm, let’s go back to your room now.”

Stormi’s eyes, red and swollen, were filled with defiance. “I want to stay with him.”

Wren gently placed a hand on her shoulder. “I know, but let’s freshen you up first.”

Stormi shook her head, her resolve firm. “I don’t want to leave him.”

“It’s okay,” Wren assured her, her voice soft but resolute. “I promise I’ll bring you right back.”

Riley stepped in, his tone practical yet compassionate. “You need to eat.”

Conner added his support. “Don’t worry, I’ll stay here with him. He won’t be alone.”

The combined reassurances from her friends finally convinced Stormi to release Rex’s hand, though her gaze lingered with sorrow. “I’ll be back, my love. Wait for me,” she whispered.

As Stormi and Wren left the room, Riley turned to his brother, his expression troubled. “Do you think he will wake up?”

Conner sighed heavily, his eyes downcast. “I’m not sure, but if he does, it will be a long time from now.”

“How long?” Riley asked, his voice strained.

“The doctor said maybe three months,” Conner replied, his voice thick with emotion.

Riley’s heart sank. “Stormi is going to fall apart if it’s that long.”

“We just have to support her right now,” Conner said firmly, his own heart aching for both his best friend and Stormi.

Riley placed a comforting hand on Conner’s shoulder. “I’m sorry, bro, that this happened. I’m sure you’re upset too.”

Conner nodded, his face a mask of stoic sadness. “Yeah, he’s my best friend.”

The two men stood in silence, their minds heavy with worry and uncertainty. The road ahead was fraught with challenges, but in that moment, their shared resolve to support Stormi and Rex bound them together in the face of their shared anguish.
